The Holiday Guide to Giving offers opportunities for you to make a difference in our community throughdonations of money, food, gifts, or your time and talent during the holiday season and beyond. This list isderived from non-profit and public agencies that serve Howard County. When you contact the agency, pleasemention that you found the opportunity through the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County’s HolidayGuide to Giving 2012. The agency listing is alphabetical. If you are interested in collecting food to help afamily in need enjoy a special meal at holiday time, look for notations below agency requests indicating thatthey can identify such families. If you are interested in helping in a soup kitchen on Thanksgiving Day orChristmas Day, the following agencies need volunteers. Please keep in mind that these organizations need helpevery day, and that opportunities to volunteer on these specific days fill up quickly.

Athelas Institute, Inc.Provides a variety of quality educational rehabilitative, residential and employment optionsfor adults with developmental disabilities in a supportive environment to maximizeopportunities for individual growth.We are in need of 150 turkeys for families along with non-perishable food and canned goods for our foodpantry. We truly appreciate any size food donations. We are also in need of 3 flat screen televisions, exercisetapes (DVD or VHS) and 2 large stereo CD/radio players. Days End Farm Horse RescueEnsuring quality care and treatment of horses through rehabilitation, humane education andcommunity outreach since 1989.Plastic pitch forks, 20 gallon feed/water buckets, duct tape (silver, yellow, red, and green) Vet Wrap, workinglawn mowers, weed wackers and a large tractor with bush hog. Volunteers are needed daily from 8am-5pm,Monday thru Sunday. Opportunities include barn chores, care of abused and neglected horses, farm tours,educational programs and maintenance/construction. Fidos For Freedom, Inc. The mission of this organization to strive to increase the quality of life and provide assistancedogs, service dogs (for people with mobility impairments), hearing dogs (for the deaf or hardof hearing), and therapy dogs (well trained personal pets of our volunteers for visitation inhealth care facilities). Fidos also provides community education on disability awarenessthrough demonstrations and information booths at schools, churches and businesses.Donations are needed to pay for food, vet care expenses and equipment for our service dogs. Fidos For Freedomservice dogs are trained to offer mobility assistance or hearing assistance for our clients with disabilities in theBaltimore/Washington area. To minimize costs, all training and care of the dogs is provided by our volunteersin their homes. However, it costs $2,500 per year for food and well vet care to support each dog. Typicallyour service dogs are in the training program for 2-3 years and we currently have about 25 dogs in variousstages of training. We also need bags of Eukaneuba small bite, large dog dry food or puppy dry food. Grassroots Crisis Intervention CenterGrassroots empowers people in crisis to make positive changes by offering professional 24-hour crisis intervention, shelter and outreach services. Gift cards to food stores, Target,Walmart, haircuts, pre-paid phone cards, gasoline cards, diapers (all sizes), pull-ups, baby wipes; pillows (new),twin size sheets, bath towels and wash cloths. Cleaning supplies — disinfectant, cleanser, laundry detergent,fabric softener sheets and bleach. Paper products — plates, bowls, cups for hot and cold drinks, plastic utensils, paper towels, napkins, foil wrap, food storage bags and food freezer bags. The Holiday Project of the National Capital AreaThe Holiday Project of the National Capital Area organizes visits to people in nursing homesand hospitals in Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware. We bring the spirit of a holiday to those who would otherwise not have a celebration.The Holiday Project of the National Capital Area is currently in need of greeting cards and small personal careitems (bottles of lotion, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.) that can be distributed to nursing homeresidents during the holiday season. Howard County Cat Club We believe that no cat deserves to be put to death because it is no longer wanted or in theway. We operate a free cat behavior hotline, advise feral colony caretakers and people whoneed to rehome their cats. We also shelter cats in a no-kill group home environment. We accept donations of PetCo gift cards, top-loading cat carriers, Fancy Feast canned food, Before Grain dry food, large cardboard scratching pads and clumping cat litter. Care packages can be customized to include these items: blankets, journal/coloring books, 2013 calendar, stuffed animal/toy, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, brush, comb,toothpaste, toothbrush, lotion, pillow, soap or body wash, socks, pens/pencils/crayons. NAMI Howard County Inc.The mission of NAMI Howard County, Inc. is to improve the lives of individuals andfamilies living with mental illness through education, advocacy and support. NAMI HowardCounty provides various educational programs throughout the year that are offered free ofcharge to the participants, but incur expenses for printing materials for each class. Our courses, which are taught by trained facilitators, are Family-to-Family (12 week course to help familiesdealing with severe mental illnesses their relatives face); Peer-to-Peer (10 week course on the topic of recoveryfor any person with serious mental illness); NAMI Basics Education (6 week course specifically designed forparents and other primary caregivers of children and adolescents who are living with mental illness.)Contact Beverley Francis-Gibson at 410-772-9300 or [email protected]: www.nami.org

National Family Resiliency Center, Inc. National Family Resiliency Center, Inc. has provided comprehensive clinical and educationalservices to families for the past 26 years. NFRC is committed to helping children and adultspreserve a sense of family, foster healthy relationships regardless of family configuration, andconstructively adjust to change, especially during times of separation, divorce, remarriage andother family transitions. Holiday donations can be made in the form of grocery store giftcards for families who are experiencing financial difficulty over the holidays. Neighbor Ride Neighbor Ride enhances the health and quality of life for Howard County's seniors byproviding affordable, volunteer-based supplemental transportation. Neighbor Ride is avolunteer-based nonprofit committed to helping Howard County seniors stay active andindependent by providing transportation for medical appointments, social outings, religiousservices, fitness activities, educational pursuits, shopping and other personal needs. Volunteers are truly the “driving force” behind Neighbor Ride; and new drivers are especially needed now, asdemand reaches all-time highs. Volunteering as a Neighbor Ride Driver is an incredibly flexible and rewardingservice opportunity. Daytime, evening and weekend volunteers are needed and drivers may choose to providerides that are convenient to their homes, offices and daily routines. No set schedule is required. Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults seeks to enhance lives by supporting, educating,and connecting young adults, and their loved ones, affected by cancer.For the fourth year, the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults will host a gift drive in the Baltimore City andHoward County communities to generate gifts for local young adult cancer patients and their families.Undergoing cancer treatment is physically, emotionally and financially draining. Often, the majority of familyincome is directed to medical expenses and families are forced to make difficult decisions on how to spendlimited funds. The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, would like to try to alleviate the financial burden ofpurchasing holiday gifts.We are seeking donations of gifts from Friday, Nov 16 through Friday, Dec 14. Walters Art MuseumWalters Art Museum brings art and people together for enjoyment, discovery and learning.We strive to create a place where people of every background can be touched by art. We arecommitted to exhibitions and programs that will strengthen and sustain our community.We seek coat room managers for each weekend until April, but especially during the holiday periods. Coatroom managers are a key “face” of the museum and often create the visitor’s first and last impression. Coatroom managers welcome visitors, check their coats and bags, issue wheelchairs and strollers, and keep the coatroom organized. Coat room managers serve from 9:45am-5pm, mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. We ask allvolunteers to serve at least 12 days during the coat season. All volunteers should have good social skills andenjoy working with people of diverse ages and backgrounds. Each volunteer must pass a background checkand complete a short training program. Training will be provided on Nov 10 at 9am-noon or Nov 17 at 9am-noon. Applications must be received no later than Nov 3, 2012. This volunteer assignment is suitable for 17-18 year old high school students interested in pursuing a career in the arts, humanities or hospitalityindustry, with preference given to those who have taken an art history course.
