Hortons Kids is a non-prot social service organization providing comprehensive services to the children o
Washington, D.C.s Anacostia neighborhood that improve the quality o their daily lives and nurture their desire
and ability to succeed.
Hortons Kids was ounded in 1989 by then-Congressional staer Karin Walser who met a group o children at a
Capitol Hill gas station and decided to take action. Since then, hundreds o Congressional sta people and other
D.C. proessionals have served as volunteer tutors and mentors.
In its twentieth year, Hortons Kids serves 157 children and amilies within Ward 8. The organization is widely
embraced and respected by parents, social service agencies, and the community at-large.
In addition to tutoring with Congressional sta in the Rayburn House Oce Building on Mondays and Tuesdays,
Hortons Kids are tutored by Department o Education sta at their headquarters on Wednesdays. Older youth
participate in a special tutoring and enrichment program on Wednesday evenings. Every week, children go on
recreational eld trips and many are involved in additional enrichment activities through Hortons Kids.
Hortons Kids is like a second amily to some o the neediest children in Anacostia. In addition to creating
individualized learning plans sensitive to the unique academic, emotional, and physiological needs o each child,
our comprehensive approach tackles a long list o issues that get in the way o child development. In response
to the childrens many needs, our services have expanded to include:
Hortons Kids comprehensive program works. Even though our children live in the most dangerous part o
Washington and attend some o its worst perorming schools, they are making impressive gains. Seventy-six
percent o children tested improved their reading fuency over the last year and ty-nine percent improved their
math skills! In the coming years, we predict that our expanding services will result in even more impressive
academic accomplishments by this group o children living in the shadow o the United States Capitol.
