Managing Biodiversity at Holcim
Phase I
(2007 – 2010)
Phase II
2011 - 2013
Aim: To develop robust ecosystem
conservation standards for Holcim Group
Development of Biodiversity
Management System
• Implementation of BMS
• Work with policy makers to enable

Show our commitment and credibility towards the local stakeholders and strengthen our position as pioneers in the sustainability commitment in the
industrial sector in Lebanon.
Working together with IUCN ROWA
QUARRY REHABILITATION PILOT PROJECT
1) A model for the rehabilitation of Holcim Lebanon quarries and the abandoned quarries in Lebanon. 2) A learning process and 3) technical know- how.
PROTECTED AREA FOR ORCHIDS
1) First site flagged for orchid significance on the East Mediterranean and MENA. 2) Raise awareness and 3) Habitat conservation.
PRE-BIODIVERSITY ASSESSMENT
1) Pre-assess biodiversity values prior to quarrying activities. 2) Present best practice.
Goal
Effective Biodiversity Management and Quarry Rehabilitation
Projects under the IUCN Partnership

Quarry Rehabilitation Pilot Project

• The project aims to:
Show a real life model of what a rehabilitated quarry would look like.
Present a significant learning process to understand the challenges
behind quarry rehabilitation.
Provide the technical know-how for future rehabilitation projects.
Collaboration with Local Experts
National Council for
Scientific Research
Association for Forests,
Development &
Conservation
Biodiversity survey studies as a
baseline to define site characteristics.

The complex nature of the quarry requires a diverse
rehabilitation approach.
High degradation of
quarry site and loss of ecological resilience
Soil erosion and lack of
water availability
Alteration of natural
topography
Lack of topsoil due to
excavation activities
Low biodiversity
comparing to the site
surroundings boasting
higher rates
Slow ecological processes
Rehabilitation Orientations
Limit soil erosion and water runoff
Promote landscape integration within the surrounding
Improve fauna presence through habitat creation and management
Restore and keep the site as close as possible to natural state
Serve for educational and research purposes

Final rehabilitation design:
“A Hidden Loop across Dry land”
Cliffland Highland Coreland Lowland

Cliffland promotes mosaic habitat creation (alternation of
bushes and grass spots).
Before After Merlon-like-substrates planting units and plant them with a variety of native species.
Make use and expand over the whole limit of the cliff area the natural landform as an “Impluvium”.
Gabion as supporting structure to serve as a second defense line to retain fine materials.

Highland uses gabion structures and will serve for research
and monitoring purposes.
Planted-with-native-shrub-species
gabions and unplanted gabions.
Use of top soil for half of the bench and
keep the other half open for natural
dynamics.
Break the steep topography of the
quarry wall.

Coreland intends to create embedded and connected water
loops.
Install a planted-with-
native-species merlon
structure.
Temporary water
ponds by installing
check dams-like
structures.
Facilitate water flow
across the site by
smoothing the slope
based on the DEM.

Lowland acts as a “panel” for the rehabilitated quarry and a
“demonstration” spot for the site.
Before After
Mount terrace-like structures of
approximately 20-25 cm height
across the arena.
Plant with the panel of species
(trees & shrubs) used in the
reforestation of the site.
Delineate from its surroundings
through hedge.
