WARREN HANSEN INDUCTED IN WCF HALL OF FAME

Canada’s Warren Hansen, 73, has been inducted into the World Curling Federation’s Hall of Fame today (Friday 8 April) after a special presentation by WCF President Kate Caithness during the 5th end break of the 1/2 play-off game at the WMCC 2016. Hansen has made influential contributions to the development of curling for more than 50 years, since discovering the sport at a high school bonspiel on an airbase just outside of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1958. His contributions have been multi-faceted, from developing many of the umpiring procedures in use today as well as establishing coaching, officiating and ice making guides. Many of the marketing and design features – four sheets of ice for championships and events held in large ice-hockey arenas – of national and international competitions that make up the spectacle that we know and love today can be attributed to Hansen.

Canada moves forward to WMCC 2016 final A triple in end number 7 after two precisely played draw shots to the button by Canadian skip Kevin Koe made the difference for Canada against the Danish side in the 1-2 play-off game on Saturday evening at the St. Jakobs-halle. Canada moves to the final on Sunday afternoon. !The first half of the game was tight with both teams succeeding to force the opposition to take singles and neither side managing to make more than one point with last rock. But in the 7th end the Canadians increased their offense by drawing around a front guard and defending their shot stone in the four foot despite having last stone. !Skip Koe with his first added another shot stone behind the guards and close to the button. As the Danish skip Rasmus Stjerne was too short with a possible tap-back saver, Koe had the chance to add another stone to the center. His sweepers Brent Laing and Ben Hebert perfectly manoeuvered it to the side of the button for a 5:2 lead. The Canadians didn't have any problems defending that advantage through ends 8-10 and Skip Koe finished the game off with precise runback-double takeout. Canada now has to wait for the other finalist to be decided in a semifinal between Denmark and the winner of the 3/4 play-off game between Japan and the USA.

Im Gegensatz zu manch anderem Team stellte Adelboden erst in der Woche vor den Titelkämpfen auf das neue Material um. Es mag die Schweizer Equipe ehren, dass sie primär mit ihren curlerischen Fähigkeiten zu brillieren versuchten. Taktisch war dieser Weg im Nachhinein wohl falsch...

Canada routs Switzerland at men’s world curling championship BASEL, SWITZERLAND—With an emphatic rout of the tournament host, Canada has sent notice it is the team to beat heading into the playoffs at the men’s world curling championship. Kevin Koe’s Calgary rink finished the round-robin in first place at 10-1, capping its run to the playoffs with a 7-2 win over Switzerland in Thursday’s final draw at St. Jakobshalle arena. After posting a few shaky wins to start the tournament, Canada rounded into form and almost ran the table. Koe’s only hiccup was a 4-3 extra-end loss to defending champion Sweden on Wednesday. “It’s a pretty tough field, lots of good teams, and obviously we would have taken (10-1) at the start of the week,” Koe said. “So it’s been a great week, and now we’re looking forward to the playoffs.”

Shuster, US men reach playoffs Team USA fought off challenges by South Korea and Germany on Thursday in Basel, Switzerland, to advance to the playoffs of the World Men’s Curling Championship. It marks the first time since 2010 that the U.S. has reached the playoffs. George was a member of that squad. The Americans haven’t earned a medal since 2007 when they won bronze and haven’t been in the gold medal match since 1981.

Dansk curlingskipper efter VM-triumf: Jeg er så stolt !Basel: Rasmus Stjerne var en stolt mand, da det sent torsdag stod klart, at han og hans curlingherrer er klar til at kæmpe om VM-medaljer til Danmark. Med en flot sejr på 8-7 over Sveriges regerende verdensmestre sluttede Danmark på andenpladsen i grundspillet og har dermed to chancer for at nå helt til tops. Et nederlag kunne have sendt Danmark ud af turneringen. En tæt kamp mod verdensmestrene, et af de bedste hold i verden, og vi skulle vinde. Det er sådan en lettelse (at gøre det). Nur Platz 9 für Curler Zu wenig, um sich dem grossen Fernziel Olympia 2018 in Südkorea massgeblich zu nähern. Die Ringe hat sich Michel bereits 2013 vor den Spielen in Sotchi auf den linken Bizeps stechen lassen. Ein Stich ins Herz dürften die mageren 4 Punkte für die Olympia-qualifikation sein, die er mit Schlussrang 9 von der Heim-WM in der Schweiz mitnimmt.

Inspiring the next generation of curlers As the very best curlers are competing for the World Men’s Curling Championship 2016 title, there are countless young curling fans watching at home or in the stands of the St-Jakobshalle in admiration. !By WCF sports journalism trainee, Marilyn Santucci !Switzerland has hosted a total of nine World Curling Championships – eight men’s and four women’s – two of which have been in Basel. SWISSCURLING (Swiss Curling Association) is made up of 160 clubs, and approximately 8,000 registered curlers who curl in 44 Curling Rinks and 20 open-air rinks.

Curling has to fight for attention How is SWISSCURLING encouraging the next generation to participate in the sport?Patrick Kaeser is a former world junior curler, who now works as sponsoring manager for Swiss National Television. K a e s e r a l s o w o r k s w i t h SWISSCURLING. He is head coach for Youth Olympic events, head coach for junior summer camps and trainer and coach for the national junior squad. According to him, in order for curling to gain popularity in Switzerland, it needs to set itself apart from other sports. “There was a big change in curling in the past few years – our sport is more professional, more athletic and more entertaining than some years ago. But due to the many different and new sports, we have to fight for the public interest worldwide. If we cannot make our sport more popular the attention will go down quite fast,” he said.

In order to raise interest with the younger generation, programs and other initiatives have been created to target this market. “At the moment there is no large national campaign from the National Curling Association to bring kids to curling. But a lot of local curling clubs put a lot of work and enthusiasm into promoting curling in their region. For example, a lot of clubs organise local school sport activities. The curling rink of Berne [largest club in Switzerland] invited 20 school classes for a free curling lesson last season. The demand was huge,” he said.

Big events help create interest 2015 World Women's curling champion, Nadine Lehmann, a Swiss curler who plays third for Team Alina Paetz, is also in Basel to take in the action. When asked what she thinks would help encourage youth to participate in curling, she expressed that taking advantage of big events like the World Men’s Curling Championship is key. She said: “I think such a big event here in Switzerland is a good oportunity for schools to have classes at the arena. Teachers bring the students here to watch curling, so the kids can see the players and talk to them." Swiss curler Yannick Schwaller, who is the 2014 world junior curling champion, sees a rise in interest among young people. “I think most young curlers still come to the sport because of their family, but Swiss curling sees also more and more interest from young curlers outside the traditional curling community.”

All in all, Patrick Kaeser sees a great potential from hosting word class curling events, like the Men’s World Championship, in Switzerland, “Large curling events like the European Championship in Champéry and the Worlds in Basel are very important to make curling in Switzerland more popular within the younger generation."

Curling-Tage für Basler Schüler

Das OK der WM 2016 in Basel hat gemeinsam mit den Kantonen Basel-Stadt und Basel -Landschaft e ine einzigartige Initiative lanciert, um den Curlingsport unter den Schülern und Lehrern bekannter und populärer zu machen. Während der WM-Woche nahmen rund 30 Schulklassen mit Schülern im Alter zwischen 7 und 17 Jahren mit ihren Lehrern an einer speziellen Curling-Aktivität teil. Das Programm konnte nach individuellen Bedürfnissen zusammengestellt werden, zum Beispiel mit einer Trainingslektion in d e r C u r l i n g h a l l e A r l e s h e i m u n d anschliessendem Besuch eines WM-Spiels in der St. Jakobshalle, oder nur mit einer Einführung auf dem Eis oder auch n u r m i t e i n e m B e s u c h d e r W M . Organisator Christoph Gloor, selber Lehrer und Curler, ist sehr zufrieden mit dem Echo der Aktion: "Während den fünf Wochentagen haben rund 30 Klassen mit 800 Schülern das Kombiprogramm mit Curling und WM-Besuch absolviert. Insgesamt erreichten wir mit unserem Angebot rund 1200 Schüler." Was ihn besonders freut: "Viele Klassen kamen sehr gut vorbereitet an die WM. Einige Lehrer hatten vorher mit den Schülern den Sport besprochen und ihnen die

Regeln erklärt." B e s o n d e r s beliebt war die Autogrammjagd n a c h d e n Spielen, wobei sich die Athleten stets genügend Zeit nahmen und mit den Schülern sprachen oder i h n e n Fr a g e n beantworteten.

Das Hirn der WM !Vor dem Spiel gegen Norwegen möchte der Schweizer Coach wissen, ob der norwegische Skip eine Schwäche hat. Dank der Spielerstatistik von CURLIT sieht er, dass der Norweger in den bisherigen zehn Spielen bei 57 gespielten Takeouts eine hervorragende Quote von 91 Prozent verzeichnete. Hingegen happerte es etwas bei den Outturn Draws. Hier schaffte er nur gerade 69%. Also wird man versuchen, während des Spiels solche Auf-gaben zu forcieren. Diese und viele andere Informationen, wie etwa das grafische Protokoll sämtlicher gespielten Steine, erhalten die Coaches, aber auch die Medien, von CURLIT. Die Firma führt seit vielen Jahren an Olympischen Spielen, Welt- und Europameis-terschaften die Statistiken über jeden Spieler und jeden einzelnen gespielten Stein und ist für den Resultatdienst verantwortlich. !Vor 31 Jahren, an der EM 1985 in Grindelwald, begann der ETH- und Uni-Informatiker Christian Saager mit solchen Statistiken. 1992 ent-wickelte er ein erstes Curling Informationssystem, das an der WM 1993 in Genf seine Feuertaufe bestand. Es folgten zahlreiche internationale Einsätze und schliesslich kam es zur vertraglichen Zusammenarbeit mit dem Internationalen Olympischen Komitee (IOC) und der World Curling Federation (WCF). !Mit der Zeit wurden der technische und zeitliche Aufwand immer grösser und die Aufgaben breiter. Ein Beispiel dafür ist der Draw Shot Challenge, also das Steinspiel, mit dem einerseits entschieden wird, welches Team im 1. End den letzten Stein hat und das anderseits dazu dient, bei Punktegleichheit und Gleichheit der direkten Begegnungen ein Ranking zu erstellen. CURLIT stellt neu ein Messgerät und eine Applikation zur Verfügung, welche die Daten elektronisch erfasst und direkt auf die grossen Anzeige-Screens in der St.Jakobshalle überträgt. Wenige Sekunden nach der Messung sehen die Zuschauer und Medien das Ergebnis des Steinspiels auf dem grossen Screen. !Mit ihrer 1999 gegründeten Firma CURLIT sind Christian Saager und seine Frau Nadine nicht nur an internationalen Wettkämpfen aktiv; sie haben u.a. auch ein Coach Tool entwickelt, mit dem Teamcoaches selbständig die wichtigsten Daten für ihre Teams aufzeichnen und später wieder abrufen können. In Basel sitzen die beiden mit ihrer Assistentin und zehn Statistikern hoch oben unter dem Dach der St.Jakobshalle, behalten stets den Überblick über das Geschehen auf den Rinks und leiten ihre Informationen online an ihre "Kunden" weiter. Sie sind damit buchstäblich das „Hirn“ der WM. „Durch unsere langjährige Erfahrung können wir konsistente und verlässliche Informationen anbieten. Unsere Massstäbe gelten als streng, wir geben bei Fehlern keinen Bonus,“ sagt Nadine Saager. Das macht die „Stats“ von CURLIT für alle so wertvoll.

Die Statistik-Rangliste der WM 2016 entspricht nicht ganz der effektiven Rangliste. Es kommt eben auch auf die "Big Shots" an.

BIG DATA FROM THE WMCC'S BRAIN

The collection and delivery of any kind of curling data at the WMCC 2016 in Basel is in the hands of Christian and Nadine Saager. In good hands, as the couple has no less than 31 years of experience in the management of competition data at big international events. Christian started doing "stats" at the European Curling Championships in 1985 in Grindelwald. Since that time, he has travelled to numerous event locations in Europe, Asia and Northern America to deliver the hard facts about curling such as player and team statistics, shot-by-shot analysis, replays or competition summaries. With their firm CURLIT they have not only enhanced curling result services and statistics over the years, but also developed useful coach tools frequently used by coaches around the world. The newest instrument from their collection may be seen in Basel. The tool delivers optical measures and calculations of the last stone draws (LSDs) that the teams have to execute before every game. For the convenience of athletes, spectators and the media, these results are projected within seconds after their collection on the big screen at the St. Jakobshalle. Nadine and Christian's stats teams are known as beeing strict and not giving any bonuses for missed stones. That makes their data so valuable for curling experts and officials.
