Happy Valentine’s Day!

180 Million - Valentines Cards are pur-chased every year making Valentine’s Day the second most popular greeting card-giving occasion next to Christmas.

A Happy Groundhog Day , I sure hope that varmint predicts an early spring I’ve had enough of winter now , starting to chomp at the bit. This was the first time in a lot of years that the Happy Hangover ride was not held. I have seen several hearty riders out there in early January but I wasn’t among them.
There are several rides in February, 7th is the Group Riding Seminar with a ride after-wards 13th is the Sweetheart ride 18th Dinner ride, 27th Brass Monkey ride and every Sun-day breakfast ride , so come on out and join us for fun , food and fellowship with your fellow HOG members. Our goal is to ride and have fun so lets fire up the bikes and ride. Jim Wilson had his road captain meeting in January. They have some good ideas for rides coming up this year so I’m looking forward to wherever they might take us.
If anyone goes on an adventure this year please write a story about it and give it to the newsletter editor , Dave Osborne. We are always looking for new roads to try and if you don’t mind sharing , let us know what you find. The State Rally registration should be open soon , check the web site link from our home page for info . The host hotel has been booked up but there are other hotels close by still available. Again check the site or ask one of the officers for info.
Hope to see you on the road, MARK
Wow!
It has been the coldest winter that I can remember. I hope that spring is on its way. We are off to a great start this year. We have planned several great events this year. I hope that you find something fun to do. We are working hard to improve our riding skills and group riding.
Later this month we will be sending out a Survey. As you are aware, it is getting more difficult to raise money in this economy. This survey is being sent to you to get your input regarding the direction our Chapter needs to take in order to raise money for our operating costs. We would like and appreciate your opinion. Remember, this Chapter belongs to all of us. We all need to do our part to make this the best organization possible. We look forward to hearing from you.

We’re lucky that we have a virtual year-round riding season. However, when the mer-cury hides in the bottom of the little red bulb, we have to make some changes in our riding style. One of the big enemies of riders is hypo-thermia. Riding at highway speeds in cool or cold weather can deplete a rider’s body heat and leave him numb and fuzzy-headed before he realizes what has happened.
Even when the temperature is in the 60’s, the wind chill factor at speeds over 40 miles per hour is in the low 30’s. Riders often misjudge how cold the ride will be because they are freshly out of a warm house and standing still in the warm sunshine. At temperatures below 70°, they should dress in multiple layers, add-ing and subtracting as necessary. Not only do multiple layers provide versatility, they also create insulated pockets of warm air. While it is common for riders to put on sweatshirts and jackets, the lower body is often ignored.
Thermal underwear and chaps keep feet and knees flexible and ready to function. Ther-mal socks and ski-sock liners help keep toes cozy. Many ski shops offer an excellent variety in various weights. The old gray variety with the red toes will do the job also. A well-designed winter riding suit made especially for motorcycling is a bulky but very welcome addi-tion to any rider’s wardrobe. Lightweight riding gloves do little to protect from the cold, and supple hands are critical to quick responses to unexpected hazards. Ski gloves or winter rid-ing gloves with gauntlet flares help keep hands toasty. Some riders add ski glove lin-ers, or use three-finger mittens for added warmth. They should be aware, however, that any added bulk may make operating the con-trols more awkward. NEXT PAGE TOP
Thanks to all the ladies who came out to our January meeting at Famous Anthony’s. We always have a good time whenever we get together. If you weren’t able to attend and you’d like to be on the email list, please email or call me so that I can add you to the list.
This month the LOH meeting will be bring-ing down the house with all our strikes! Or maybe our gutter balls! Either way we’re going to have a blast! We’ll be meeting February 16th at the Hilltop Bowling Alley on Williamson Rd at 6:30. We’ll be finishing up compiling our list of charity suggestions so if there’s something you’d like to suggest please have it to me by the February meeting.
Looking forward to March, we have the pleasure of inviting Sherry’s friend Walt to talk to us ladies about beauty care again this year. As always, if you have any activities or other things you’d like the LOH to do this year, please let me know!

Cabin fever set in early this winter. With all the snow and extremely cold temperatures, the best I’ve been willing to do is start my bike once in awhile just to keep the battery charged. Normally I would be riding at least a few times a week and wouldn’t have to worry about it. But February is here and with that comes the glimmer of hope that soon the temps will begin to warm. February also ushers in the new years Rally Events. On the 27th begins Daytona Bike Week and for 10 days you can escape this tundra and enjoy riding without cold weather clothing. DBW has been going on since 1937. It originated as a motorcycle race and the first one took place on the beach on January 24,1937. The winner of the first Daytona 200, or as the locals called it, the Handlebar Derby, was Ed Kretz on an Indian motorcycle. The event was discontinued in 1947 because of WWII but that’s when the parties really started up. Even though the war was going on, enthusi-ast would still ride to Daytona to let off a little steam and take in the warm weather. After the war the races continued in 1947 and the partying continued also. Then in 1961, the race was moved off the beach to Daytona International Speedway where it is held today. Last years winner of the 200 was Ben Bostrom on a Yamaha. The speedway has something going on the entire week so if you go, don’t forget to stop by and check it out. And of course the parties go on all day now. Hopefully, Lisa and I will get the chance to go again this year and maybe, see some of you there. Stay warm and-- Let’s Roll, MIKE

My name is Mike Puckett. My wife and I ride a 2008 105
th Copper and Black Ultra Classic.
We have logged over 100,000 miles on our Harleys. We have met some wonderful folks along the way. We love this Chapter and the members. I am currently the Director of the Roanoke Valley HOG Chapter. I joined HOG
in 1994 and really was not very active till 1999. Since then I have served as Road
Captain, Photographer, Safety Officer, Editor, Treasurer, and Assistant Director.

A face shield is essential, and it should be firmly snapped in place. Those wearing three-quarter helmets may want to consider a ski mask or muffler to keep the chin and throat warm. There are excellent masks which cover the throat, mouth, and nose with a ma-terial similar to a lightweight wetsuit, yet allow the rider to breathe and speak comfortably. Some dealerships may have them, but they are more commonly found at sporting goods stores, which offer a line of ski wear. A luxurious, although expensive, way to keep warm is with an electric suit, gloves, socks, and even heated grips. They draw little current, but offer a lot of overall warmth.
Co-riders should be afforded the same clothing or more, since they often don’t get the same protection from the fairing that the rider does.
There’s a whole different world of riding in the winter, and we can enjoy it to its fullest if we dress properly. LET’S RIDE, BRAD
