Hofstra's Last Game (vs. Drexel – 2/17/02): Senior

forward Kimberley Coke poured in a game and career-

high 26 points as Hofstra University ended a three-game

losing skid with a 79-65 win over Drexel University on

Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Arena. Drexel took the

early advantage in the contest as they jumped out to a

seven-point advantage, 11-4, with 15:31 left in the first

half. Hofstra would quickly respond and a 7-0 run by the

Pride tied the score at 11 with 14:25 remaining. Hofstra

took their first lead of the half, a lead they would not

relinquish the rest of the contest, at the 10:15 mark on a

three-pointer by junior guard Jen Brickey. With the

score 19-18 in favor of the Pride, Hofstra went on a 7-0

run, including four points from junior forward Tara

Dilworth to open a 26-18 lead with 7:48 left. Hofstra

opened up their largest lead of the first half, 11 points,

on a jumper from sophomore guard Staceyann Claxton

with 1:35 left before intermission. Drexel would only get

as close as three on one occasion in the second half as

Hofstra controlled the contest and opened up their

largest lead of the game, 79-63, with 46 seconds

remaining. Coke scored 16 of her career-high points in

the second half in leading Hofstra to their first victory

over Drexel since the 1998-99 season, a string of six

straight wins by the Dragons. Also in double figures for

Hofstra was Brickey, who scored 18 points and also

pulled down eight rebounds. Dilworth had a season-high

12 rebounds for Hofstra, as the Pride outrebounded the

Dragons 44-42. Drexel was led in scoring by Michelle

Maslowski, the leading scorer in the CAA, who tallied 24

points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Only One in Double-Figures: In Thursday’s 52-50

victory over Towson, only Kimberly Coke scored in

double-digits for the Pride. It was also only the third

game this season in which only one Pride player scored

in double figures, Coke scored 18 in a 61-42 loss at

Northwestern while Jen Brickey tallied 21 in a 71-66 loss

at Delaware.

Nice Half: In Hofstra’s game vs. George Mason on

2/1/02, Jen Brickey and Rume Pela each had

Complete Game Effort: In Hofstra’s game vs. Virginia

Commonwealth on 1/13/02, junior guard Jen Brickey

went the distance and played all 40 minutes and scored

a team-high 24 points.

Complete Game Effort – Part Two: In the Pride’s game

at William & Mary on 1/20/02, Brickey once again played

all 40 minutes. Brickey outdid herself this time as she

poured in a career-high 36 points on 13-22 shooting.

The 36 points were the fourth highest single game

scoring total in Hofstra Women’s Basketball history. The

second half was where Brickey did most of her damage

as she scored 23 points, including 6-7 from beyond the

arc.

Season-High: The 40 points scored in the first half

against Drexel on 2/17/02 marked a season-high in first

half scoring for the Pride. The previous high was 38 in

the first half against Army.

Hofstra Head Coach Leslie Danowski: Leslie

Schlegel-Danowski, the ninth Head Women’s Basketball

Coach in school history, is in her ninth season at the

helm of the Pride Basketball program. She has posted

an 88-153 record in her eight plus seasons of work.

Since her arrival in 1993, Danowski has coached Hofstra

through two conference changes and has increased

Hofstra’s level of competitiveness through strong

recruiting and a style of play that stresses strong

defense and a well-rounded offense. Danowski’s eight

recruiting classes have brought five All-Long Island

selections, two All-Maryland players, two All-New Jersey

players, two All-Delaware selections, two All-Virginia

players, an All-Michigan selection, an All-Connecticut

player and a two-time New Hampshire Gatorade Player

of the Year to Hofstra. The incoming class of 2005 also

features a two-time Delaware Gatorade Player of the

Year and a Street and Smith honorable mention All-

American. Danowski is assisted by Bill Zatulskis,

Elizabeth O’Brien and Meredith Pine.

Back-to-Back: Hofstra had three double figure scorers-

the same three people (Brickey, Coke and Pela)-in both

games at the Army Tip-Off Classic. It was the 15th

straight game that Brickey and Coke had scored in

double figures. For Pela, it was the first time since

January 18, 2001 that she had back-to-back double

figure scoring games.

Welcome Back: Sophomore guard Staceyann Claxton,

the sister of Philadelphia 76ers guard Craig “Speedy”

Claxton, made her first appearance of the 2001-02

season at William & Mary on 1/20/02. Claxton played 18

minutes and scored nine points. In addition, she went to

the free throw line 13 times, a season-high for a Hofstra

Women’s Basketball player. Claxton played 23 minutes

against Towson on 1/24/02 and posted four points,

seven rebounds and three assists.

Bench Scoring: Junior Jen Brickey came off the bench

against Army on 11/17/01 for the first time since her

freshman season, and proceeded to pour in a game-high

22 points and 8-17 shooting while playing 28 minutes.

Page 6: HOFSTRA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES – Game 25 ... · 10 Jamila Haynes 3.1 1.1 0.2 (G, 5-5, RFr., Columbus, OH) 33 Amaka Agugua 0.3 2.2 0.2 (F, 5-11, Fr., Herndon, VA) The Games:

Drought: In Hofstra’s game vs. Monmouth on 11/20/01,

the Pride’s starting backcourt of Jen Brickey and Lauren

Hall-Gregory went 0-13 from the field. Brickey ended

the game with four points on free throws, her lowest

scoring output since the final game of her freshman

season.

Exhibition versus N.Y. Gazelles: Junior Guard Jen

including 21 in the first half to lead the Hofstra Women's

Basketball team to a 97-73 exhibition win over the New

York Gazelles on Friday evening at Hofstra Arena. The

Gazelles led the early part of the first half, including

taking their last lead of the game, 17-16, on a layup by

Leah Cromer at the 12:28 mark of the first half. A 10-2

run ensued for the Pride, allowing Hofstra to take a 26-

19 lead with 9:10 remaining in the half. Hofstra would

extend their lead to as many as 18 points in the first,

when Brickey nailed a three-pointer with 1:31 left to give

the Pride a 51-33 lead at that point. The teams would

trade baskets the rest of the half, and Hofstra went into

the break leading 53-38. In the second half, the

Gazelles never cut the deficit below the 15-point halftime

deficit and saw the Pride open as much as a 27-point

Pennsylvania on Friday evening at the Army Tip-Off

the second half, but could never seize the lead from the

Quakers. The Pride whittled the lead down to lead down

to one point on four occasions in the second half, the

final one being at 48-47 with 9:23 left on a basket by

Habrukowich answered with a big three-pointer with 3:03

left to stretch the lead back to 59-54. Brickey's two free

throws narrowed the gap to 59-56 with 2:27 remaining,

but a Julie Epton free throw and a Habrukowich jump

shot stretched the lead up to 62-56 with 41 seconds left,

Olszewski knocked down a three-pointer with 26

eight rebounds and four assists. Christine Gassman led

the Cadets with 12 points off the bench. The Pride held a

39-26 advantage on the boards and forced Army into 25

turnovers.

Game three vs. Monmouth: Jewonda Bright scored

ten of her 18 points in the second half and LaToya

Thompson added 15 points as the Monmouth University

Hawks earned their first win of the season, defeating

Hofstra University, 67-62, at Hofstra Arena on Tuesday

evening. Four of the five starters for Monmouth scored

in double-figures, as Michelle Cappadona and

Rashawnah French added 14 and 10 points,

respectively. The first half was a see-saw battle as the

score was tied six times and there were 12 lead

changes. Senior forward Kimberley Coke (Brooklyn,

NY/Brooklyn Tech) kept Hofstra within three points at the

break as she scored 13 of her game-high 19 points

before intermission. The Hawks opened up the second

half with a quick 6-2 spurt to open their largest lead of

the game, seven points, at 40-33. The Pride fought back

and tied the score at 51 with 9:52 remaining on a lay-up

by sophomore forward Jessica Olszewski (East

Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), who tallied eight points

in 15 minutes of action. Olszewski would add a three-

pointer at the 5:03 mark to give Hofstra a one point

advantage, 60-59, but Monmouth closed the game with

a 8-3 run to earn its first victory of the season.

Freshman forward Megan Scott (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton)

made her home debut for Hofstra and scored 14 points

and pulled down six rebounds. Junior guard Lauren Hall-

Gregory (Vienna, VA/James Madison) dished off ten

assists for the Pride. It was the 16th time in her career

that she had six or more assists. Bright also added a

game-high 13 rebounds for the Hawks.

Game four at St. John’s: Junior Guard Jen Brickey

poured in a game-high 26 points, including 19 in the first

half as the Hofstra Women's Basketball team rolled to a

27-point victory, 61-34, over the Red Storm of St. John's

on Friday evening at Alumni Hall. The victory was

Hofstra first over St. John's since defeating the Red

Storm, 24-23, during the 1970-71 season. It was also

Hofstra's first victory over a Big East opponent since

defeating Syracuse, 57-53, during the 1979-80 season.

Hofstra took an early 6-2 lead as freshman forward

Megan Scott and Brickey each hit three-pointer

sandwiched around two free throws from Shemika

Stevens of St. John's. The Red Storm countered with a

6-0 run of their own, including back-to-back baskets by

Patrycja Gulak, to take their only lead of the game at 8-6

with 14:56 to go in the first half. Hofstra responded

though, and proceeded to go on a 20-0 run over the next

9:21 to take a 26-8 lead with 5:35 left before the half.

The Red Storm cut the deficit to 11, after a quick 8-1 run,

before the Pride closed the half with an 8-0 run of their

own to lead 35-16 at the break. Brickey had two three-

pointers in the half closing 8-0 run. St. John's, who only

hit five field goals in the first half, saw the Hofstra lead

grow to as many as 28 in the second half as the Pride

opened the second stanza with a 16-7 run, a run that

included five points from Brickey, four from senior

forward Kimberley Coke and four from sophomore

center Rume Pela. The two teams would trade baskets

over the final 11:55 of the game as Hofstra evened their

record at 2-2, while keeping St. John's winless at 0-3.

Coke and Pela joined Brickey in double figures as they

scored 12 and 11, respectively, while junior guard

Lauren Hall-Gregory dished off a game-high six assists

in the win. Pela added ten rebounds, giving Hofstra their

first double-double of the young season. Freshman

forward Bianka Brunson played 28 minutes and pulled

down a game-high 14 rebounds, including 11 defensive.

Since 1993, Hofstra is now 11-3 versus teams located

within the five boroughs of New York City. The Red

Storm were led by Mary Pat Statler's 11 points and

Gulak's nine rebounds.

Game five vs. San Diego: Freshman forward Megan

Scott hit a shot from the top of the key as the shot clock

expired with 1:17 left in the game to give Hofstra a 51-50

lead and junior guard Jen Brickey added a layup with :47

left as Hofstra University defeated the University of San

Diego, 57-52, in the Championship Game of the SJU

Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday evening at Alumni

Hall. The win enabled Hofstra to win thier first in-season

tournament since winning the Cornell Holiday

Tournament during the 1999-00 season. The first half

was a defensive battle as both teams didn't finally reach

double figures until a three-pointer by San Diego's Kerri

Nakamoto with 5:54 left in the first half made the score

14-11 in favor of the Pride. Hofstra would hold onto the

lead the remainder of the first half and go into the break

with a 27-24 lead. Hofstra got six points apiece from

junior guard Jen Brickey and junior forward Tara

Dilworth in the first 20 minutes of action. Hofstra opened

thier largest lead of the game at the start of the second

half as they began with a 3-0 run (all from senior forward

Kimberley Coke) over the first 1:45 of that half. A 23-10

run for the Toreros ensued over the next 14 minutes to

turn a seven-point Pride lead into a six-point deficit with

4:15 remaining. San Diego would remain in the lead

until Scott hit her game-winner. Hofstra sealed the

victory as Brickey converted of 4-6 free throws to end

the contest and give Hofstra the five-point win.

Tournament MVP Brickey added 15 points in the

championship game to give her 41 for the tournament.

Hofstra, which moved over .500 for the first time this

season, also got 11 points from Coke and 10 from Scott.

Hofstra was led in rebounding by Coke and Rume Pela,

who each pulled down six rebounds. San Diego got a

game-high 17 points from Marta Menuez and a game-

high 11 rebounds from Cassidy Blaine.

Game six at Columbia: A 12-0 run midway through

the second half turned a 44-43 game into a 56-43

contest as Columbia University defeated Hofstra, 78-62,

on Tuesday evening at Levien Gym. For the first almost

15 minutes of the first half, the two teams traded baskets

as the score was tied six times and the lead changed

three times. That was until a made free throw by Patricia

Kern at 5:22 put the Lions up by one, 25-24. From that

point on Columbia would not relinquish the lead and

would go up by as many as 23 in the final minutes of the

second half when they led, 76-53. The second half

started with a 35-28 score with CU holding the seven-

point advantage. Hofstra would get the deficit to one, 44-

43, at 13:50 but the Pride would not score for the next

four minutes as the Lions went on a 12-0 run to go up

56-43. The streak was started by Jaschik who made a

free throw to make it 45-43 and Nadell would follow with

five quick points including a three and layup for a

Columbia 50-43 lead at 12:18. Hofstra would keep pace

with Columbia in the final 10 minutes as they would

score 19 to the Lions 22 but the lead would be too much

for them to overcome as the Lions would be victorious,

78-62. The Lions were led by Megan O’Neill who had

14, including three treys. Katie Day had a game-high 11

rebounds before fouling out late in the second half.

Jennifer Brickey led the game with 19 for Hofstra.

Game seven at Northwestern: Senior forward

Kimberley Coke led all scorers with 18 points, but

Hofstra University couldn't overcome a 17-point halftime

deficit as it fell to Northwestern University, 61-42, on

Friday evening in the opening round of the Roger L.

White Invitational. With the loss the Pride fall to 3-4 on

the year, while Northwestern earns its first victory of the

season against five losses. Hofstra quickly jumped out

to an 8-2 lead 2:39 into the contest, before a 5:45

scoring drought by the Pride allowed the Wildcats to take

an 11-9 lead. Hofstra would take its last lead of the

game when freshman forward Bianka Brunson scored

at the 10:23 mark, making the score 14-11 in favor of

Hofstra. The Wildcats would then proceed to hold

Hofstra scoreless the remainder of the half as they went

on a 20-0 run to take a 31-14 lead into the break. Poor

shooting did the Pride in during the first half as they shot

six-for-26 (23.1%), including 0-for-four from three-point

range. Northwestern kept the defensive pressure up at

the start of the second half as the Wildcats opened with

a 8-0 run over the first 3:32 to take a 39-14 lead before

junior guard Jen Brickey ended the run with a layup at

the 15:26 mark. The two teams would trade baskets over

the next 7:05 before the Pride were able to go on a run

of their own, 9-2, making the score 49-32 in favor of the

Wildcats with 5:04 remaining. The Northwestern lead

hovered at 17 points until two free throws in the final

minute gave the Wildcats a 61-42 win. Coke added

eight rebounds to her game-high scoring total, while

Brunson pulled down 10 rebounds for the Pride.

Northwestern held Hofstra's leading scorer, Brickey, to

a season-low four points. The Wildcats had two players

with double-doubles as Suzanne Morrison tallied 15

points and 10 rebounds, while Sarah Kwasinki scored 10

points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Game eight vs. La Salle: LaSalle University used a

10-2 run to start the second half to overcome a one-point

halftime deficit and defeated Hofstra, 54-48, in the

consolation game of the Roger L. White Invitational on

Saturday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena. It was the first

time in Hofstra's last 10 in-season tournament

appearances that it failed to win a game. The Pride

jumped out to an early lead, 18-10, 9:29 into the contest.

After a LaSalle timeout, the Explorers scored five of the

game's next six points (all by Suzanne Keilty) to cut the

Hofstra advantage to four, 19-15. A Tara Dilworth layup

stopped the run and allowed Hofstra to hold onto the

lead as the teams went into the lockerroom with the

Pride ahead by one, 29-28. LaSalle took its first lead of

the game as Bonnie Randa sank a three-pointer 11

seconds into the second half to give the

Explorers a 31-29 lead. A Jen Brickey three-pointer cut

the Hofstra deficit to three points, 38-35, but the

Explorers clamped down on defense and held the Pride

scoreless over the next 5:40 to take a 10-point

advantage, 47-37. Hofstra was able to get within six on

several occasions as it dropped its third straight game.

Rume Pela had her second double-double of the season

with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while

Brickey scored a game-high 19 points for the Pride.

LaSalle was led by Keilty who scored 18 points, all in the

first half. Beth Hudak also scored in double-figures for

the Explorers, as she had 14 points.

Game nine vs. Wagner: Meredith Kerns hit a lay-up

with seven seconds left to give the Wagner College

Seahawks a one-point advantage and they held on to

defeat Hofstra, 61-60, at Hofstra Arena on Sunday

afternoon. The loss, which was Hofstra’s fourth straight,

drops the Pride to 3-6 on the season, while Wagner

improves to 2-5. Wagner led the majority of the first half

and took its largest lead of the game, 28-19, on a three-

pointer by Toni Roker with 6:27 left before intermission.

Hofstra responded though, and senior forward Kimberley

Coke (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Tech) led a Hofstra charge

to close the half as she accounted for ten of the Pride’s

final 13 points, as Hofstra closed with a 13-3 run to lead

32-31 at the break. Neither team could pull away in the

second half as Hofstra held the largest lead of four

points on several occasions, including a 57-53 lead with

2:42 left in the game on a free throw by Coke. Wagner

quickly fought back and was able to tie the score, the

13th tie score of the contest, when Roker hit a jumper

with 1:44 left to make the score 57 all. A free throw by

freshman Megan Scott (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) and a lay-

up by junior guard Jen Brickey (Nashua, NH/Nashua)

gave the Pride a three-point advantage before the

Seahawks scored the game’s final four points to win

their second game of the season. Brickey scored a

game-high 19 points for Hofstra, and sophomore center

Rume Pela (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) notched her

third double-double of the season with 13 points and a

game-high 11 rebounds. Wagner placed three players in

double figures, led by Kerns’ 18 points.

Game 10 at Delaware: Christine Cole’s three-point

play with 1:35 left to play put the Blue Hens up for good

and Allison Trapp scored four of her team-high 22 points

in the final minute of play as the University of Delaware

got by Hofstra 71-66 in both team’s Colonial Athletic

Association women’s basketball opener Saturday

afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens (7-2, 1-0) won their fourth straight game

and extended their school record home winning streak to

22 games as Trapp led the way with 22 points, Lindsay

Davis scored 11 points, and Megan Dellegrotti chipped

in with 10 points. Freshman Tiara Malcom added six

points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Hofstra (3-7, 0-1),

playing its first game since Dec. 9, dropped its fifth

straight game despite 21 points from guard Jen Brickey.

Guard Lauren Hall-Gregory was held scoreless but

dished out a BCC record tying nine assists. The Pride,

which committed 30 fouls and had three players foul out,

remained winless all-time in Newark in 18 tries. The

game was the first ever for both teams in their new

league, the Colonial Athletic Association, although the

two teams have been rivals in the East Coast

Conference and America East Conference since the

1980’s. Delaware took a slim 36-30 halftime lead in a

sloppily played first half that saw the teams combine for

29 fouls and 25 turnovers with neither team shooting

better than 41 percent from the field. The Blue Hens

maintained that lead and held off several Hofstra flurries

before the Pride took its only lead of the second half at

63-62 as Brickey converted a three-point play with 1:43

left to play. But Delaware wasted little time in regaining

the lead on the next possession as Cole (seven points)

put back a miss by Trapp and was fouled by Megan

Scott. She then converted the free throw to give the

Hens a 65-63 lead with 1:35 left. Hofstra cut the lead to

three at 69-66 on a three-pointer by Jessica Olszewski

with 18 seconds left, but Trapp followed with two free

throws two seconds later to clinch the win.

Game 11 at George Mason: Shelbylynn McBride tied

a career-high with 17 points and set a new career-high in

rebounds to lead George Mason University to a 70-55

Colonial Athletic Association win over Hofstra on Friday

evening at the Patriot Center. The loss, which was

Hofstra's sixth straight, drops the Pride to 3-8 overall on

the year and 0-2 in Colonial Athletic Association action.

George Mason improves to 7-6 overall and earns its first

conference win of the season against one defeat.

Jen Brickey got the Pride off to a good start in the first

half as she scored eight of Hofstra’s first 14 points to

give the Pride a 14-6 advantage with 14:01 left in the

first half. George Mason responded and played great

defense over the next 8:40 holding Hofstra scoreless,

while scoring 12 points of their own to take an 18-14

lead with 6:11 left in the first half. The two teams would

then alternate baskets the remainder of the first half with

the Patriots going into intermission with a 30-25

advantage. The second half began with George Mason

increasing its lead to ten, 41-31, with an 11-6 run to start

the half. Hofstra countered with an 8-2 spurt, including

four points from Tara Dilworth, to cut the Patriot lead to

four, 43-39, with 12:16 left in the game. George Mason

continued to hold at least a two-point lead until Hofstra’s

Jessica Olszewski hit athree-pointer from the corner to

cut the lead to one, 55-54, with 3:27 left. It was the

closest Hofstra had been since trailing 15-14 at the 7:08

mark of the first half. After the last media timeout at the

3:21 mark, the Patriots came out and scored the next 11

points to increase their lead to 12, 66-54, with 2:30 left.

The Pride added a late free throw and George Mason’s

Shelbylynn McBride sank two free throws and added a

lay-up to give the Patriots the 70-55 win. McBride scored

the last seven points of the game for George Mason,

which went over .500 for the first time since December

22 when it was 5-3. Hofstra placed three players in

double figures as Brickey led the Pride with 14 points

and Bianka Brunson and Dilworth each added ten

points. Brunson nearly had the first double-double of her

career as she also pulled down a team-high nine

rebounds.

Game 12 at James Madison: Nadine Morgan had 18

points to lead four players in double figures as the James

Madison women's basketball team defeated Hofstra, 66-58,

Page 16: HOFSTRA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES – Game 25 ... · 10 Jamila Haynes 3.1 1.1 0.2 (G, 5-5, RFr., Columbus, OH) 33 Amaka Agugua 0.3 2.2 0.2 (F, 5-11, Fr., Herndon, VA) The Games:

on Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center. The

loss was the seventh in a row for the Pride, which sees its

overall record fall to 3-9 and its CAA record slip to 0-3.

James Madison, meanwhile, sees its record improve to

9-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in conference play. The Dukes

hit their first six field goal attempts and led by as many as 15

points (24-9 at 9:34) in the first half. A 17-6 Hofstra scoring

run, keyed by eight points by sophomore Jessica Olszewski,

cut JMU's advantage to five (31-26) with 3:48 remaining in

the half. JMU built an 18-point second-half lead (56-38 at

9:46), but the Pride outscored the Dukes 20-10 in the final

9:30, and a three-pointer at the final buzzer by junior Jen

Brickey trimmed the JMU margin to eight points. Joining

Morgan in double figures for the Dukes were Shanna Price

with 15 points, Hollee Franklin with 14 points and a game-

high nine rebounds, and Allyson Keener with 11 points.

Point guard Jess Cichowicz chipped in with 10 assists and

seven rebounds. Hofstra also had four players in double

figures on the day, led by Brickey with 16. Olszewski added

13 points, 11 of which came in the first half to keep the

Pride within 38-31 at intermission. Tara Dilworth came

off the bench to contribute 11 points on 5-8 shooting, while

Kimberley Coke added 10 points and a team-high seven

rebounds.

Game 13 vs. UNC Wilmington: Junior Guard Jen Brickey

scored 24 points, including 18 in the first half, to lead Hofstra

University to a 58-51 victory on UNC Wilmington in their

Colonial Athletic Association home opener on Friday evening

at Hofstra Arena. The win snapped a seven-game losing

skid for the Pride, who move to 4-9 overall and 1-3 in CAA

play. The Seahawks, meanwhile, fall to 8-5 and 2-2 in the

CAA. The two teams traded baskets in the first 7:16 of the

contest and were tied at 11 before Hofstra went on a 21-5

run to open a 16-point advantage, 32-16, with 3:31 left in

the first half. The run included ten points from Brickey, who

added ten rebounds to her game-high point total. It was

Brickey’s first double-double of the season and Hofstra’s

fourth overall this year (Pela- 3). The lead grew to as many

as 17 in the first half as Jessica Olszewski’s jumper with 1:15

left before intermission made the score 37-20 in favor of the

Pride. Donta Davis and Jennifer Kapper added a basket each

in the final minute of the first half to cut the deficit to 13. The

second half was a different story though as the Seahawks

opened the half on a 24-12 run over the first 14:23 to cut the

Hofstra lead to one at 49-48 with 5:37 left in the game. The

Seahawks held the Pride without a field goal for 8:36 during

the run. Jennifer Kapper, who scored a game-high 23

points for UNC Wilmington, poured in ten of her team’s 24

points during the run. The Seahawks would get no closer

than two the rest of the way as Hofstra closed the game

with a 7-3 run, including four free throws from Brickey in the

final minute. Joining Brickey in double figures for Hofstra

was sophomore center Rume Pela, who scored ten points

and added five rebounds in only 15 minutes of action.

Tara Dilworth also had ten rebounds for the Pride, who held

a 47-45 advantage on the boards. Shameka Montgomery

added 11 points for the Seahawks, while Vickey Harper

pulled down a team-high ten rebounds.

Game 14 vs. Virginia Commonwealth: Kristine

Austgulen poured in a game-high 28 points on 11-14

shooting to lead Virginia Commonwealth to a 70-63

Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra

University on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Arena.

Austgulen scored 20 of her points in the second half for

the Rams, who improve to 6-9 and 3-3 in CAA play. The

Pride, who have lost eight of their last nine games, fall to

4-10 and 1-4 in the CAA. Hofstra, which was led by

junior guard Jen Brickey’s 24 points, jumped out to a 29-

24 halftime lead behind 13 points from Brickey. Brickey

notched 13 of Hofstra’s first 15 points in the game’s first

nine minutes. Virginia Commonwealth led 20-17 on a

lay-up by Austgulen at the 7:13 mark before the Pride

closed the half on a 12—4 run to take the five-point

halftime lead. The run included four points apiece from

sophomore guard Jessica Olszewski, junior guard Billi

Godsey and sophomore center Rume Pela. The Rams

came out of halftime and immediately put the pressure

on Hofstra, going on a 15-2 at the start of the half to turn

a five-point deficit into an eight-point lead. Austgulen

accounted for ten of the Rams 15 points to open the half.

Virginia Commonwealth got the lead up to 11 on two

separate occasions, including with 7:49 left on a lay-up

by Austgulen. That basket made the score 55-44, but

two free throws from senior forward Kimberley Coke and

a three-pointer from freshman guard Jamila Haynes cut

the Pride deficit to six at 55-49 with 6:30 to play. The

lead hovered around six over the next few minutes

before a Brickey three-pointer cut it to five with 40

seconds left. Four late free throws in the game’s final 23

seconds sealed the victory for the Rams. It was the

second straight game in which Brickey has scored 24

points, leaving her only six short of 1,000 for her career.

Coke is also nearing the milestone and with her six

points in today’s game she now has scored 967 in her

Page 17: HOFSTRA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES – Game 25 ... · 10 Jamila Haynes 3.1 1.1 0.2 (G, 5-5, RFr., Columbus, OH) 33 Amaka Agugua 0.3 2.2 0.2 (F, 5-11, Fr., Herndon, VA) The Games:

career at Hofstra. Haynes posted the first double figure

scoring game of her career as she was second on the

team with ten points. Haynes also pulled down five

rebounds in her ten minutes of action. In addition to

Austgulen, the Rams had two other players in double

figures as Rochelle Luckett and ShaVonn McKinnon

tallied 16 and 12, respectively.

Game 15 at Old Dominion: Hamchetou Maiga had 15

points, eight rebounds and nine assists in just 26

minutes to lead No. 24 Old Dominion to an 82-48 victory

against Hofstra on Thursday night. Sharron Francis

added 14 points, Monique Coker had 11 and Lucienne

Berthieu and Myriah Spence each had 10 for Old

Dominion (10-5, 7-0 Colonial Athletic Association), which

has won 126 of its last 127 conference games. Jen

Brickey scored 13 points, and Kimberly Coke added 10

for Hofstra (4-11, 1-5). In the game, Brickey became

only the 15th player in the history of Hofstra Women's

Basketball to score 1,000 points when she hit a three-

pointer with 10:19 remaining in the game to give her

seven points in the contest at the time. Brickey has now

scored 1,007 in her two-plus seasons at Hofstra. The

Lady Monarchs outscored Hofstra 47-17 in the first half,

but the Pride played a spirited second half and were only

outscored by four, 35-31, after the intermission.

Game 16 at William & Mary: Junior guard Jen Brickey

poured in a career-high 36 points, the four highest single

game scoring total in Hofstra Women's Basketball

history, as the Pride overcame a 47-35 halftime deficit to

defeat William & Mary, 85-81, at William & Mary Hall on

Sunday. Kimberley Coke added 23 points for Hofstra,

giving her exactly 1,000 for her career. It marked the

second straight game that a Hofstra player had reached

the 1,000 point plateau, as Brickey scored her 1,000th

point at Old Dominion on Thursday. It was a foul-

plagued first half as the two teams combined for 25

personal fouls and 31 free throws with the Tribe racing

out to the 12 point halftime lead. After Hofstra closed

the William & Mary lead to one, at 20-19 with 10:20 left

in the first half on a pair of free throws by Staceyann

Claxton, the Tribe then went on a 20-7 run over the next

5:54 to take their largest lead of the game, 40-26 with

4:26 left. The run included five points apiece from Kia

Butts and Jami Lange. The two teams erupted for 16

points in the final four-plus minutes for the first half with

the Tribe taking their 12-point advantage. Hofstra came

out hot in the second half, quickly erasing the Tribe’s

cushion and quickly taking the lead at 55-53 with 13:05

left in the game. Brickey, who scored 23 second half

points, scored eight points during the 20-6 run to open

the half. William & Mary quickly regained the lead as

Jen Sobota was fouled taking a three-pointer and made

all three free throws to give the Tribe a 59-55 advantage

with 11:58 left in the contest. Brickey then scored 12 of

Hofstra's next 22 points to allow the Pride to take their

largest lead of the game, 77-68, with 3:59 to go in the

game. Eight free throws in the final 1:02 of the game

sealed the victory for Hofstra, allowing them to earn their

first road CAA contest of the season. Coke became the

16th member of the 1,000 Point Club at Hofstra with her

23 points and it marked the first time all season that the

Pride had scored at least 80 points. Coke pulled down a

28 points and senior forward Michelle Maslowski added

22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Drexel Women's

Basketball team to a 74-38 win over Hofstra on Sunday

8 overall and 3-6 in the CAA, while Hofstra slips to 6-12

overall and 3-6 in league play. The Dragons led wire to

wire and took a 43-16 advantage into halftime. Hofstra,

25.9 percent in the opening half (7-27) and committed 15

turnovers. Senior forward Kimberley Coke was the only

Hofstra player in double figures with 13 points on 5-10

shooting from the floor. Copskey shot 11-18 from the

Hofstra got eight early points from Brickey in the opening

11:03 of the game, while George Mason got six points

from Otim in the final 9:40 of the half. Neither team took

a lead larger than four points in the second half until the

with 6:33 to play. The Pride quickly responded and went

on an 8-0 run over the next 2:36 to take a two-point lead,

56-54, with 3:57 left in the contest. Hofstra’s quick spurt

included four points from sophomore center Rume Pela,

who scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half.

George Mason sent the contest into the extra session

when Vernessa Neamo sank a lay-up with 27 seconds

remaining after the Pride had missed the front end of a

one-and-one. George Mason sealed their eleventh win

of the season with some clutch free throw shooting in the

overtime as they went 5-6 from the line compared to the

Pride’s 2-5 showing from the charity stripe. Pela posted

her team-leading fourth double-double of the season as

Madison, a 2001 WNIT semifinalist. Neither team held

more than a five-point lead in the opening 20 minutes of

the contest as both teams were unable to get on track

offensively. Hofstra held the Dukes to 28.6 % (10-35)

from the field, while only shooting 35.5 % (11-31)

themselves. The Pride were able to go into the break

with a four-point advantage behind ten first half points
