WHAT IS THE HODDLE WADDLE?
The Hoddle Waddle is a way of exploring the city of Melbourne, discovering sites located around ‘Hoddle’s grid’
You will visit sites that are both historic, and contemporary
Just try not to get lost on the way . . .
THIS IS HODDLE’S GRID: We are here
DOING THE HODDLE WADDLE:
When you do the Hoddle Waddle you will be divided into small teams that each follow their own set of clues.
Each team has a:

You can find out more about these roles in your team worksheets
AFTER THE HODDLE WADDLE:
After you complete the Hoddle Waddle you might want to use the photos that you have taken along the way to construct a Photo Story.
You will know when some good photo opportunities are coming up when you see this symbol on your team worksheet:
OTHER IMAGES FOR YOUR STORY
You may also want to include historic images in your Photo Story of sites around Melbourne.
You can find a lot of these on the State Library of Victoria website, in our catalogue
USING THE CATALOGUE
To use the catalogue, just type in what you want to search for in the white box.
You can restrict your search to only look for pictures by using the ‘pictures’ tab at the top.
Different tabs are to search for different item types
The search bar is just like a search engine on the web. Just type in what you’re looking for and click Go
USING THE IMAGES
When you find an image that you like, you can click a link to ‘view online’ if it is digitised.
If you want to use the image in your Photo Story, you can just right click on it and choose ‘Save image as . . .’
OTHER GOOD IMAGE SITES
As well as the State Library of Victoria catalogue, you can also find good images on these sites:
• Picture Australia• National Library of Australia• Flickr: the Commons• National Archives of Australia• National Film & Sound Archive• Walking Melbourne
OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION
There is also useful information about historical Melbourne on the Library’s ergo website.
The Colonial Melbourne section has information on some of the key places and people from Early Melbourne, including a section on Hoddle’s Grid.
USING PHOTOSTORY
If you don’t have the Photo Story 3 program, you can download it for free from the
Microsoft website.
The program is really easy to use, just upload your photos and add text, narration and music to create your story.
There is more information about how to use Photo Story 3 on the web.
