M aking new products in large am ounts, devising new processes, and im proving old ones—such problem s are th e job of D esign and D evelopm ent. An exam ple was th e developm ent of a large-scale process for m aking *'Orlon” acrylic fiber s ta r tin g from sm all labora to ry sam ples of polyacrylonitrile.

Q u an tity p roduction of polym er was only a beginning. A whole set of new and unusual problem s arose in spinning the fiber, because polyacrylonitrile decomposes before i t m elts, and i t dissolves only in high-boiling solvents.

A team of D u P o n t technical m en—chem ical and m echanical engineers, in s trum en ta tion specialists, m etallurgists, and m ateria ls handling experts undertook to find a solution. H ere are a few of the problem s they m et:

1. Solve problems in heat transfer and fluid flow arising from the fact th a t the spinning solution m ust be blanketed with inert gas to prevent fire hazards.

2 . Design a system for controlling the temperature of the viscous spinning solution within ±0.5°F. a t hundreds of points in the plant.

3 . Design new mechanisms for winding yarn at high speed without any deviation in yarn tension.

4 . Design air conditioning and ventilating systems to remove fumes from specific spots, but still allow easy access to all areas.

A m ong D u F o n t’s m any research and engineering activ ities, D esign and D evelopm ent jobs provide great opportu n ity for th e knowledge, ingenuity , and team w ork capaci- ties o f m en in a g rea t varie ty of technical fields.

The characteristics of a super-pressure pump, designed by Du Pont engineers and made in Du Pont shops, are studied by Ralph C. Grubb, B.S.M.E., Tennessee ’51, and Paul D. Kohl, B.S.M.E., Purdue '46.

Albert Rand, B.S.M .E., M .I .T . '50 {right) develops controls for chemical equipment.

Even If W e LoseWinning is grc.it; losing not so good, and

yet the same amount ot effort is needed,

win or lose. At the same time, to support

and side with the winning team is easy, hut

to support .1 losing team is rare. And yet

it is the team that is not winning that really

needs the support.

Drexel's football team is playing their

last game of the season tt)morrow. The

team’s record of w'ins is mediocre at best

but their effort has been tremendous. Every

week the boys have been practicing. They’ve

been giving many hours of their time as

well as their effort in order to field a team

that can perform and win for the students.

Tomorrow is the last chance that the stU'

dents will be able to show their apprecia'

tion to a game bunch of men. Until this

time the student effort has only been mC'

diocre and it's about time the students

matched the team for effort. The team

deserves student support. Let's make tO'

morrow a big day.

W e WinHeadlines are attracted to big things. As

a result the Pi Kap Show', Campus Chest,

Kouge and Robe, and the l.F. Ball all re

ceive their due share of publicity. How'

ever, life would be very dull and empty if

not for the many sm.ill activities around

Drexel.

Look around and see the things that are

happening on campus. Post'game frater-

nity house warmings, Newman Club, Drexel

Christian Fellow'ship, Intercollegiate Con-

ference on Government, Chess Club arc

just a few of the many groups that keep Drexel alive.

These clubs are not operated for Drexel's benefit, they are kept going by students who are interested in themselves and their ego and who belong to them to satisfy their ow'n interests.

Why don't you find the club that will Iv of some value to >ou -and then join it.
