President’s Report

To improve our Walks & Cycling Program the Club would like your help. The Improvement

Project Team set up to identify areas of our activity program that could be improved has

launched a survey asking about members’ preferences and suggestions for improving the

activities offered. The survey is now online at https://goo.gl/forms/OK5ZlzcD8pUQt59x1.

The survey is important to help in planning future activity programs and I urge you to

complete it so that we can know your opinion.

The club is looking for volunteers with basic PC computer skills and prepared to be

available at the critical monthly Circular preparation dates. The position can be shared so

different people can do different months. The task is preparing the trips and events and trip

reports data from the website database. It takes about two hours and is a time-critical task,

needing to be done each month between the Thursday previews closing date and the

following Tuesday Circular closing date. The volunteer can work on their own Windows PC

after it has been set up with the necessary files. Macs are not suitable. Please email the

Secretary Jane Long at [email protected] to register your interest. Full

training will be provided.

The training for new and prospective Coordinators will be on Sunday 28 May 2017. If you

have been thinking about making the step to coordinating a walk or if you have already

coordinated several walks and would like to learn more then you should attend this

training.

It is important to keep growing our pool of coordinators, especially for those who like to

walk at the weekend. Our walking program depends on members volunteering to

coordinate walks. This training will help you identify the steps to prepare and plan a walk,

what to do on the walk and outline the mentoring program to support you during the first

walks that you coordinate. See page 8 in the Circular for more details.

Vale

Don Field passed away on 1 February.

I am sure that older club members would like us to record the work of Don Field who

joined the club in 1958. Don was soon serving the club, being Walks Secretary in 1960,

then Executive, President, Vice President. He represented the club on the Cradle

Mountain Lake St Clair National Park Board for five years. Don was on the Editorial

Subcommittee for eleven years and also contributed articles, photos and poems to The

Tasmanian Tramp. Don was a good artist and several of his sketches appeared on our

Circular covers in the 1960s. He was responsible for the formation of the Tracks

Subcommittee and he was a member of the Steering Committee forming the Tasmanian

Conservation Trust. Don looked after the slides that Joe Picone left to the Club and he

donated a folder of Joe's photos to the Club. Many members will recall trips with Don in the

South West. Bob Wyatt

Ski and Hut Notes Working Bees & Hut Orientation

The January working bee was very well attended. The toilets were emptied and are

working. However, at the time of writing we are yet to wire the new toilet fan to the LED

panels batteries – so some odour until then. The next working bee is on 27–28 May. All

welcome.

Please read all the safety instructions on arrival and sign to say you have done so. Please

report any malfunction, damage or low stock ASAP.

Care for the Hut and Others

If the front door does not latch properly, place an item behind it to prevent weather and

animal entry during the night. (A fix is planned.) For hygiene please bring your own

pillowslip, and under-sheet if you would lie directly on a mattress. Take care not to touch

gas mantles when lighting them to prevent so many needing replacement. At departure,

please leave a good kindling supply and the hut at least as clean as found on arrival. Andrew Davey, Ski & Hut Secretary

Circular Production Homes Volunteers are required to assist in preparation of Circulars for mailing. This is followed by

a sociable cuppa with friends. Work starts at 7.30 pm and usually finishes at about 9 pm.

Please bring a small supper contribution.

23 Mar Thu Lyn Reid, 9 Dresden St, Sandy Bay

20 Apr Thu Wendy Ashley, 8 Park Street, Bellerive.

18 May Thu Ted and Jacinta Bradshaw, 2/18 Rose Court, Sandy Bay.

Coordinator Training Program for new and prospective Coordinators If you have been thinking about coordinating a walk or if you have already coordinated

several walks and would like some additional information, then read on.

The Club Walking Program is dependent on Coordinators to schedule and organise walks

for all members to enjoy. It is therefore important to keep growing our pool of coordinators

especially for those who like to walk at the weekend.

To help you make the step to coordinating a walk, the Club is conducting a training

session for members to identify the steps to prepare and plan a walk, what to do on the

walk, discuss some of the risks and to learn about the mentoring program to support you

during the first walks that you coordinate.

The training program will he held on:

Date: Sunday 28 May 2017

Venue: Tas. Bridge Association Club Rooms

Marine Esplanade, New Town Bay

Time: 9 am – 1 pm

To register for the training program please email your details to the Club Secretary Jane

Long at [email protected].

If you would like more information about the training please contact Rupert Manners on

6292 1310 or Philip Le Grove on 6224 4280.

Trip Secretary Report The program of activities is one of the Hobart Walking Club's greatest assets. It is run by

members for members. To ensure the program meets the interests of members, we are

requesting your preferences and suggestions for improving the activities offered through a

survey.

The survey is online at https://goo.gl/forms/OK5ZlzcD8pUQt59x1. I urge you to fill it out, as

your feedback is very important.

The survey is open from 13 February to 31 March. In addition to providing valuable

information to help improve the program, as an additional incentive, you will have the

opportunity to enter into a draw for a $100 gift voucher to spend at Mountain Designs. If

you would prefer to do a paper survey, contact me on 6292 1310 or email:

[email protected]. Rupert Manners, Trip Secretary

MARCH 2017 11

Some Walker Responsibilities Previews are not necessarily accurate; measurements are estimates, particularly

duration, pace and distance. Those who do not know the Trip Coordinator or are uncertain about any aspect of the walk should contact the coordinator before the day of the walk. Prospective Members and those bringing visitors must contact relevant Trip Coordinators

prior to each intended walk for a booking. Any participant under 18 should have a person responsible for them (guardian) for the trip. Before each trip, all intending participants must satisfy themselves that the walk is likely to be within their capability. Check the Preview. If you have any questions,

contact the Trip Coordinator before the day of the walk. You must notify them at the time of booking, at least the day before the walk, of any medical conditions (such as allergies or asthma) which may affect your walking ability. Leave details of the trip and a Search & Rescue contact (inside back page of the Circular) with a friend or relative. If the trip is overdue, they should first contact them, not the Police. If you see people who need help, offer assistance. Everyone should help to make the trip safer and more enjoyable for all.

HWC Facebook Group The Hobart Walking Club Facebook group is a closed group where only group members can see the posts. All members can see and add to/comment on the posts associated with the Club. Being part of the Club Facebook group is not exclusive to HWC members — anyone can join the HWC Facebook group.

Visitors A full Club Member may take one visitor on a Club trip with the prior agreement of the trip coordinator. A visitor may attend a maximum of three Club trips. Each visitor must sign the Visitor Waiver for each trip they attend.

Transport Private cars are pooled for trips unless otherwise stated. Cost is shared by car passengers, with a recommended maximum of 10c per passenger per km.

Toddlers Toddles All children must be under the care of their member guardian. All guardians/parents should sign the Club Waiver for minors for each trip. Children shall be kept under watch at all times during a Club trip.

Dog Walks All dog walks shall comply with the rules and regulations of government and local government authorities. Leave No Trace principles apply to official Club Dog Walks.

Cancelling a Trip When taking bookings always get contact details, including telephone numbers, of those interested. If you cancel or postpone, ensure you clearly tell all would-be participants ASAP. For email or telephone messages, ask for and ensure you get an acknowledgement. If not, telephone to restate cancellation. Failing contact, you, or a delegate, go to the appointed meeting place(s) to cancel a trip. For non-booking trips, you, or a delegate, go to the meeting place(s) to cancel a trip. Alternatively, have someone else conduct the trip, notify the Programmer and hand the forms to the new Trip Coordinator before the trip.

Program 1 Mar Wed Pilchers Hill SE

10 km 150 m 4 hrs

Judith Holmes 0407 230 735 or 6243 7148 Hobart Derwent

[email protected]

A walk in two sections! Meet at Geilston Bay Boat Club car park, De Bomfords Lane,

Geilston Bay ready to start walking at 10 am. The first section will be along Bedlam Walls

track to Shag Bay and then a walk in Pilchers Hill Reserve will follow. Bring water and

lunch. Pace slow/medium to suit all participating. Prospective members welcome,

please book.

1 Mar Wed Mt Wedge MM

8 km 800 m 5 hrs

Gillian Fitzgerald 6234 4752 or 0438 344 759 Bowes/Wedge

For a day walk, this mountain is one of the best for views of the South West. It entails a

steady climb up through some lovely rainforest, then out onto rocky alpine slopes. Finally,

the summit is reached, where we can enjoy the views while lunching. (All this depends on

the weather, naturally!) Full wet weather gear and water. Prospectives, please book.

Depart Fitzroy Gardens 7.45 am or Granton by arrangement. Approx. 260 km return.

1 Mar Wed Executive Meeting 5.30 pm at SLT, 71 Murray St

2 Mar Thu The Thumbs LR

20 km 1000 m 9–10 hrs

John Kerrison 6228 6427 Adamsfield/Tiger/Wedge

The Thumbs is a prominent peak to the east of Lake Gordon. After driving along Clear Hill

Rd and the Adamsfield 4WD track as far as is practical, we will start the walk in the vicinity

of the abandoned osmiridium-mining town of Adamsfield. The intended route is untracked

and will follow Packers Spur. A fair bit of scrub and rock is likely. Pace moderate. Bring full

wet weather gear. Meet at Fitzroy Gardens. Suitable for fit prospectives. Please book.

Departure 6 am. Return driving distance 270 km.

3 Mar Fri Cascades SNQ

2 hrs

Carmen Walker 6227 2108 after 8.30 am

Meet at 10.45 am in Anglesea Street. We will have morning tea at the café and then walk

down to where the tables and seats are. People who want to walk further can do so. Pace

easy.

3 Mar Fri Club Meeting

The Club Meeting will be held in the Philip Smith Theatre, 2 Edward Street, Glebe, starting

at 7.30 pm. Entertainment: Dr John Smith was lost on Mt Wellington on 23 January 1858.

Barry Ford will talk about the search for his body and the events leading to the erection of

the memorial tablet.

Page 13: HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. · HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. ... 7 Mar Tue MM Marion Bay Heather Hurd ... 10 Mar Fri SNQ Margate Felicity Walch

MARCH 2017 13

4 Mar Sat Picket Hill SE

8–9 km 300 m 4hrs

Felicity Walch 6229 5391

Meet first, ready to leave at 9.45 am, at the overflow car park at the Kingborough Sports

Centre, Summerleas Road. This car park is clearly signed, on the right-hand side of the

road into the Centre. There will be a short drive to the start of the walk. We will follow a

horse trail through light bush (including a steep, eroded uphill bit), then head up Picket Hill,

with its, hopefully, fabulous views, then complete a loop at Leslie Vale before returning to

ascend Picket Hill and a track variation back to the cars. (This is the shorter version of the

walk I usually do here.) Slow/medium pace. Prospectives welcome. Please book.

4 Mar Sat Florentine Peak LM

16 km 750 m 7 hrs

Jocelyn Darby 6239 1187 or 0417 818 369 Mount Field

[email protected]

This is a walk in the Mount Field area. We will drive to Lake Dobson and follow the Mount

Field west track over the Rodways to K Col hut. From there it will be off track to Florentine

Peak. The walk will mostly be open and exposed and confidence on rocks is essential.

Bring wet weather gear and water. Medium pace. Meet at Fitzroy Gardens for 7.30 am

departure. Return driving distance 200 km.

4–10 Mar EXT Port Davey Track MM

16 km

Ingrid McGaughey 0402 677 483

[email protected]

This iconic track goes from Scotts Peak Dam to Melaleuca and is famous for being a little

bit muddy. The route follows valleys and plateaus and goes past the Western Arthurs and

the Rugby Range before we have to row across the Bathurst Narrows and walk in to

Melaleuca. There are a couple of creeks to cross. A straightforward side trip to Mt Beattie

provides the most glorious views of Bathurst Harbour and Port Davey. I have allowed a

spare day for bad weather or to climb Mt Brock (MR). Flight cost Melaleuca to Hobart $250

pp. Full wet weather gear required. Portable fuel stoves required. Number limit. Fully

booked. Contact leader to be waitlisted.

5 Mar Sun Ragged Range MR

7 km 500 m 4–5 hrs

Chris Rathbone 236757 or 0466106222

[email protected]

The walk takes in a small peak on the edge of Lake Gordon through rainforest and then

some scrub along the summit ridge. Beautiful views if clear. The destination may change

depending on weather. The original walk in the last Circular was Mt Wright but access to

that appears to be closed off for the time being. Meet at Fitzroy Gardens. Departure 7.30

am. Return driving distance 200 km. Book by 6 pm the evening before.

80 km. The standard varies from easy to a more difficult section through the canyon. The

route crosses the Black Bluff Range, which is best done in reasonable weather.

Depending on the forecast we might do the walk the other way from Cradle to Penguin.

Suitable for fit prospectives. Full wet weather gear required. Portable fuel stoves

required. Number limit. Book with the coordinator by 14 April.

18–21 May EXT Miena Base Camp MR

Rupert Manners 0417 921 310 or 6292 1310

This is a base camp staying at a fisherman's shack in Miena. The peaks on the agenda

are Jilletts Tier, Billop Bluff, Mt Patrick, Mt Penny West and Split Rock. There are also

other peaks that could be explored if there is time and inclination. Some of the walks are

quite short so we may do a couple to fill in the day. Most of these will be off-track so

expect some scrub and rock; hopefully, not too much. The accommodation will cost

around $35 per person per night, depending on final numbers. We will go out to the pub for

one night. Full wet weather gear required. Number limit. Suitable for fit prospectives.

Book with the coordinator by 4 May.

15–18 Jun EXT Frenchmans Cap MR

Rupert Manners 0417 921 310 or 6292 1310

We will walk to Lake Vera Hut on Day 1. On Day 2 we will walk to Tahune Hut and if the

weather is clear climb the Cap. On Day 3 we will climb the Cap if we did not do it on Day 2,

and then walk back down to Lake Vera Hut. On Day 4 we will walk out. I am planning to

stay in a hut each night. I am hoping for a bit of snow but it might be too early. Full wet

weather gear required. Portable fuel stoves required. Number limit. Suitable for fit

prospectives. Book with the coordinator by 1 June.

TRIP REPORTS

8 Dec Montrose, Old Beach, Pontville Kevin Smith

Seven determined cyclists battled wind and rain but were not deterred in their quest for a

ride and pub lunch at Pontville!

15 Dec Grove to Ranelagh John McDonald

John McDonald, Margaret McDonald, David Pears, Les Crompton, Sharon West, Christine

Spry, Nick Hume, Tony Rae, Jane Monaghan, Maggie McKerracher, Gill Mosmann

21 Dec Boronia Beach/Hill Jeanette Brown

It was a great walk for all but the leader who slipped and injured her knee! Felicity took

over the leadership role while Jeanette was driven home. Jeanette’s early departure from

the walk meant that afternoon tea was served and ready when the 20 walkers arrived at

the end of the walk.

23–31 Dec Cruisy Xmas Escape – South Coast Track Andreas Hack

A very luvly Xmas escape with unbelievable weather was had by Susanne, Esther, Tom

and Andreas. It often felt like we were in the tropics rather than Tassie. Only one day of

rain, which we spent mostly at Louisa Bay. We even briefly thought about camping on top

of the Ironbounds. Pics have been posted at HWC Facebook page. The only minor issue

was the lack of reliable water at the Prion Beach boat crossing camp. The Milford Creek

bypass due to beach erosion near the New River Lagoon outflow was not nearly as bad as

many told us. It adds maybe 20 minutes walking time. Thanks everyone for a fab trip.

Should do this sort of thing more often!

24 Dec Peter Murrell Res/Tinderbox Hills Midj Jones

An enjoyable walk to relax and soak in views before the rigours of Christmas Day and a

welcome interlude between the rushed Christmas Eve shopping of Saturday morning and

the frantic last-minute shopping of Saturday afternoon. Unusual sightings included a close-

up swoop of a wedge-tailed eagle, a flop-eared escapee pet bunny and an incipient sea

fog beginning to roll up to the River Derwent.

2 Jan Toddlers Toddle Angela Devine

The weather was fine and 24 adults and children enjoyed a leisurely stroll northwards from

Cornelian Bay and back through the emery to the playground.

3–12 Jan The Spires Andrew Davey

David Young graciously offered help to boat walkers over Lake Gordon – thanks.

The trip went well but for some health and heat effects. Dale, Rohan, Grant, Angela &

Andrew did most of the scrub-bashing. Day 1: boated over Lake Gordon with help of David

Young, walked steeply up Pleiades to camp in a saddle near a stream. Day 2: walked

north to first three lakes north of the ridge from Pokana to Shining areas. Day 3: warm to

hot walk to Font and ascended the local Abels, camped a little north of Font with splendid

views. Day 4: lake to high plateau near Shining overlooking Spires, ascending Conical and

Page 27: HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. · HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. ... 7 Mar Tue MM Marion Bay Heather Hurd ... 10 Mar Fri SNQ Margate Felicity Walch

MARCH 2017 27

Shining. Day 5: to Font, ascended Flame, Flame Peak and False Dome, then camped

near small pool above Font to north. Day 6: (warm) Innes High Rocky and Philps LO. Day

7: (very windy, minor drizzle) returned past Shining to lake of day 2. Day 8: ascended

Pokana Peak on the way to Lake Gordon for exit before forecast strong winds for some

days. Andrew made three boat trips until just after sunset to transfer as many walkers over

Lake Gordon as safe. The first trip was rough in places. Day 9: the few remaining walkers

were transferred across Lake Gordon in two trips. All walkers returned home via a late

morning tea stop. All found it a hard trip. We were most fortunate to have great weather

but for all but a few hours of the trip. The difficulties due to health or fitness were handled

without impairing the trip, which eventually exceeded time expectations due to the good

efforts of most. (Even the Coordinator suffered a prolonged reaction due to a soy-

containing food.) Some reported their best walking trip ever.

4 Jan Shipstern and Tunnel Bay area Bernd Janisch

On a fine day with perfect walking conditions, 33 contented walkers completed the first

circuit walk in years into the Shipstern and Tunnel Bay area. The recently opened section

had nice sections of forest and a good, relatively easy track to follow, made all the more

memorable by several steep ascents.

7 Jan MONA Margaret Gibbs

A small group on a very hot day enjoyed learning more about the Glenorchy Art and

Sculpture Park.

9 Jan Sandy Bay to Hobart Rob Hill

I know a loss of 10 per cent of walkers being acceptable is a (untruthful) Club myth, but

over 50 per cent is unthinkable! However, leaders of urban walks must accept the attrition

of punters. (‘Just going to catch the bus home here!’ is inevitable). A great walk. Nobody

took the swim option. A person in a hi-vis yellow coat on the real Blinking Billy (washing off

the seagull poo no doubt) made me speculate that a certain member may have taken

‘morning tea at Blinking Billy’ literally – but no. The remaining 5 of the 11 walkers selected

to do the optional beach walk around Battery Point. A very low tide made this easy. Again

an SE turns into an SM. Ah, well!

9 Jan Toddlers Toddle Helen Dalla-Fontana

Seventeen of us walked to the morning tea spot under the pine trees. The male children

made a fort (not wanting help from the girls), and then 14 continued to the end of the walk,

three returning to the cars early.

10 Jan Cape Queen Elizabeth Jill Andrews

After morning tea on Mars Bluff we proceeded to check out the ‘cardboard goblet’. All in

order there, we set off to the wonderful views from the cape at lunchtime. A couple of black

snakes seen but luckily no close encounters. A bracing swim capped off a lovely day as

the low tide allowed us to get around the rocks.

Page 28: HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. · HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. ... 7 Mar Tue MM Marion Bay Heather Hurd ... 10 Mar Fri SNQ Margate Felicity Walch

MARCH 2017 28

11 Jan Whalers Lookout Jenny Ford

Forty people enjoyed a lovely day on the East Coast. Some went swimming at Cockle Bay.

Most of us had lunch on top of Whalers Lookout. We were not able to cross over the

lagoon entrance – it was too wide and deep! Thank you very much to the two landowners

who gave us permission to walk on their land. We appreciate their kindness.

11–15 Jan Tyndalls and Mt Murchison Rupert Manners

The Tyndalls part of the trip was fantastic. We climbed to the Plateau on the Wednesday

and on the Thursday, in very atmospheric mist, we GPSed our way to Mt Geikie. We didn't

go to the summit. In the afternoon the mist cleared and we went up Mt Tyndall, with its

fantastic views. We descended on the Friday in pouring horizontal rain and retired to Mary

Cuthbertson's Queenstown cottage – a wonderful relief from the weather. The rain

continued on the Saturday so we gave up on Mt Murchison and drove home, visiting

Nelson Falls, Donaghue Lookout and an art exhibition at Lake St Clair.

12–14 Jan Teds Beach base camp John Kerrison

Cancelled due to weather forecast.

14 Jan Mt Sprent Carolynne Smith

Unfavourable forecast. Mt Sprent not an option. Three adventurers had a good 5.5-hour

return leg stretch along Holley Rd in search of Gilbert Leitch Huon Pine Reserve.

The ‘road’ is being reclaimed by vegetation, and the signage announcing the reserve is not

evident. Lunch was had ‘who knows where’ on a log in the forest with friendly leeches.

Nevertheless, an outing of mystery suitable for a rainy day. Had a relaxing, therapeutic

swim in the pool, then suitable dinner at Lake Pedder Lodge.

14 Jan Dog Walk – Lowestoft Bay to Windermere Bay Dawn Hendrick

Despite the blustery conditions eight humans and eight canines set off on a 6 km walk

from the now vacant Berriedale caravan park to Windermere Bay. There was much

dashing about and jumping in and out of the water (by dogs only!).

14 Jan Mays Beach Mary Foster

Three walkers started off in gale-force winds, we were met by two late comers just before

morning tea. By the time we got half way the winds had abated, but the tide was very high.

We had a leisurely lunch on the northern end of Mays Beach, then back to the cars.

15 Jan Adamsons Peak Paul Geeves

This was a trip to one of the iconic peaks of southern Tasmania. Ten walkers formed our

party. The mostly fine weather made for an enjoyable trip to the summit. We did not

proceed beyond the summit, as it was too windy on top to do so. We did get fairly good

views from the top. We were back at the cars by 5 pm.

Page 29: HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. · HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. ... 7 Mar Tue MM Marion Bay Heather Hurd ... 10 Mar Fri SNQ Margate Felicity Walch

MARCH 2017 29

16 Jan Roches Beach to Seven Mile Beach Garry Hulme

A small but perfectly formed group of four set off from Roches Beach at 10 am. A short

amble saw us taking morning tea at 10.30 and arriving at Seven Mile Beach by 11.30. To

ease the stress of such exertion we had a refreshing swim followed by lunch. The trip back

along the cliff top track was scenic and relaxing. As advertised, SE indeed.

17 Jan Mt Fortescue Circuit Kerry Scott

We all had a great walk along this magnificent coastline. Along the way we stopped in at

Retakunna and the ranger (Jess) allowed us to have a good look at the site. Had lunch on

top of Mt Fortescue and then enjoyed the wonderful forest atmosphere on the way to Cape

Hauy junction. Thanks all for your assistance and cooperation on this walk.

18 Jan Two Huts Tasman Peninsula Warwick Risby

Eighteen walkers completed the day in 6.5 hrs on a cooler and, at times, very windy day.

Highlights were visiting the two huts. At Retakunna, the friendly lady ranger provided

helpful info as we inspected the comfortable sleeping cabins and spotlessly clean kitchen

and dining area. We then continued to the Munro site with similar facilities, where viewing

from the helipad provided rewarding coastal views during our lunch stop. Returning the

same way on the Old Cape Pillar track, one member had an unfortunate bloody fall but

recovered quickly. We were treated to seeing an echidna, tiger snake and a small flock of

yellow-tailed black cockatoos during the day – very exciting for our 14-year-old visitor from

WA under the President's responsibility. A late arvo tea was enjoyed at Fortescue Bay

before returning home from a great day's walk.

18 Jan Mount Elizabeth Judy Bond

In Judy Bond's enforced absence on the high seas, Felicity Walch and Jeanette Brown

took on leadership of this walk, hoping that between them they could remember the route.

This proved a false hope, but the summit was reached after an impromptu steep uphill

bush bash, changing this walk from SE to SM (or SR!). There was brief panic at lunch

when only 29 were accounted for but another count made it to the 30 who had signed on.

To the leaders' considerable relief, one of our 30 found a track (thank you again!) to get

the party from the summit to the cars. Thank you everyone for your patience and humour!

18 Jan Slide Track Working Bee Rupert Manners

Six Club members and six Bruny Islanders combined to re-clear the Slide Track. The

winter winds and rain had made the section by Haulage Bay particularly bad but the whole

track is pretty clear now.

19 Jan Orana Picnic Bob Wyatt

Fifty-four members (mostly cyclists!) enjoyed the picnic at Orana with a BBQ. Phyl outlined

the history of the camp and reported that the Club had been picnicking there for 34 years.

Page 30: HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. · HOBART WALKING CLUB INC. ... 7 Mar Tue MM Marion Bay Heather Hurd ... 10 Mar Fri SNQ Margate Felicity Walch

MARCH 2017 30

19 Jan Orana Picnic Jenny Ford

We rode from Lauderdale Canal to Seven Mile Beach, Pittwater Rd junction for morning

tea, then back to Orana to join, then picnic and swim. We had a lovely day. Thank you to

the Orana organisers – a 25 km ride.

19 Jan Mt Brown, Crescent Bay Stacy Kirkby

Delightful walk in a beautiful part of the world on a perfect day. Unexpected meeting of

Pandani Club on the summit of Mt Brown meant we found new lunch spot on the cliff edge

above the climbers cliffs – gave us spectacular views.

21 Jan Lambert Gully and Mt Nelson Wendy Pearson

Twelve walkers completed a circuit on Mt Nelson. We left from Lambert Ave, climbed up

steps in Lambert Gully and had lunch at the Signal Station. After lunch we used different

tracks to return. Pleasant, cool conditions on this four-hour walk.

22 Jan Mt Wedge Lee Douglas

Fabulous summer weather with wonderful views all around. Quite a few trees over the

forest track. This was a first visit for some people in the group.

23 Jan Dog Walk Seven Mile Beach Rob Hill

Seven people, five dogs, a lovely wide beach and pleasant company. David showed us a

nice shady lunch spot in the dunes, complete with table.

24 Jan Bicentennial Park, Mt Nelson Jane Long

Despite threats of high winds and showers, a fine walk with some impressive views was

enjoyed by the cheerful group of 27 walkers. A couple of solid hills got hearts pumping and

lungs puffing!

26 Jan Huonville, Judbury Gail Friesen

Twenty riders (a record for the moderate easy group) enjoyed a very pleasant cycle

through the Huon countryside on Australia Day. Instead of lamingtons, the highlight of

morning tea was Dianne's rhubarb cake.

26 Jan Tinpot Island Jim Baptist

Australia Day! Did this in a figure of eight circuit (if you can have such a thing!) to include

Pauls Hill and to take advantage of the lower tide for the coastal section. Bit windy but we

found sheltered spots for food and drink stops. Adventurous group of 17 completed the

walk in six hours covering 16 km.

28 Jan South Arm Josephine Petrov

Fifteen walkers and one prospective member enjoyed a pleasant walk on a mild day

around South Arm. We were able to climb Ben Hill having garnered permission, which

gave us a 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside. No swimming as the day

deteriorated at lunchtime! An enjoyable day out.

Tony and Linda Cook 6228 4986

The farm-based camp is located under the Great Western Tiers. Easter is serene, and in

my opinion, Caveside is the best medicine in a bottle. There are many fabulous walks to

do, and the quiet country roads offer champagne cycling. Easter is a little later this year, so

please make sure you do have suitable clothing, and a pair of gumboots just in case of the

odd shower. The camp is down in dear Joe Parsons' paddock and fresh water is available

on tap. Toilets are located inside the Caveside Community Pool Complex, which is

adjacent to the paddock (please bring your own toilet paper to avoid embarrassment).

There are no shower facilities. I strongly recommend bringing your own portable BBQs etc.

to help reduce dear old Joe's workload. Eskies are recommended.

Feel free to pursue your own agendas or just relax with a book. The Cooks' Traditional

Happy Hour is very popular, so bring your treats to share and enjoy the company of friends

around the campfire at night. Bookings are required. Prospectives welcome. Emails

preferred or phone in the evenings.

Club Objects The Club objects are to promote, encourage and organise walking and similar outdoor

activities; to promote interest in flora, fauna and natural scenery in Tasmania; to provide

training opportunities for members in navigation and bushcraft; provide a source of

information on bushwalking in Tasmania to members and; to promote goodwill and social

interaction amongst members.

Joining the Club Persons aged 16 years and over can apply for prospective membership. To become a full

member, three qualifying walks and an Essential Skills Day have to be completed within

12 months of joining. For further details, visit the Club website or contact the Membership

Officer, Geoff O’Hara (0467 739 913) or email [email protected].

Risk The Club is a group of people who enjoy bushwalks and similar activities, with trips

organised on a voluntary basis by and for Club members. Every trip coordinator is an

unpaid volunteer who organises the walk for fellow Club members. They are not paid

professionals with commensurate training and responsibility. Thus each trip member is

responsible for their own safety, suitability of equipment and personal skills. Members and

visitors take part in Club organised activities at their own risk. The Club does not offer

qualified first aid.

Club activities involve inherent risks and dangers. The published Walk Previews grade the

level of difficulty and distance, and may indicate some risks. However, unanticipated and

unavoidable hazards can occur which result in serious injury or property loss/damage. For

example, weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, tracks become treacherous

and accidents can happen.

Liability Members acknowledge and agree that in applying to become a member (of whatever

grade) or renewing that membership of the Club that the nature of the activities carried out

by the Club and by participating voluntarily, freely and at their own risk, are such that it

would be unreasonable for the Club or any of its members acting on its behalf to be in any

way responsible for any injury, or death, to members or to damage to their property and

members hereby, to the full extent permitted by law, waive all of their legal rights of action

against and fully release the Club for loss, damage or injury or death or loss or damage to

property howsoever arising out of or in relation to member’s participation in the activities

conducted by the Club including without limitation, liability for any negligent or tortuous Act

or omission or breach of statutory duty on the part of the Club, its office bearers or agents.

Insurance and Legal Matters The Club insurance covers public liability, excluding member-to-member events, during

Club activities. Members' vehicles are not covered. For further information write to the

Secretary on constitutional or legal matters and the Treasurer on insurance matters.
