Ashore his important posts were hydrographer. RAN.on three occasions. Naval Officer in Charge North Aust·ralia Area and finally Chief of Staff 10 Ihe Aag Officer inCharge East Australia Area.

On retircment from the Navy in 1972. Tony worked fora short period as a hydrographic surveyor before joiningthe Intemationall-lydrographie Bureau in Monaco as headof Ihe technical section.

In thiS capacny he was most active in promoting thecause and importance of hydrography. particularly in de­veloping countries.

In 1983 he: retired for the second time and returned toAustralia I....ing in both Bundaberg and Sydney.

He was a Fellow of the Institution of Sun·eyors. AUSI'ralia, Member of the AusU'a.ban Instilute'of Canogrophers,Fellow of the RO)'al Arts Association and Pasl President ofthe HydrO&TaphlC Society.

An assistant inspector with the Department of Defence hasreceived a 510,000 award for i;ientifying cost saYings inmarine maintenance which will save the department over$367,000.

Naval Reservists from Austn.lia and NewZealand have combined for a Naval Control andProtection of Sbipping (NCAPS) exercise inS)'dney.

The exercise. TASMANffiADER 87. was the firsl ofa series of biennial tlCercisesbet....'een the two countries.

Control and pmteetion ofshipping is one of the manyfunctions carried out by NavyReserve personnel in timesof international tension.

It involves the control ofShipping movements to re­duce risk and provide pro­tection.

The aim of this exercisewas to diree1 a notional con­voy to a destination. passingthrough waters in which anunfriendly regional powerwas conducting a major navalexercise.

During the exercisC'. twoRNZNVR ofrlocrs and onesenior sailor served in Syd­ney while two RANR offIC­ers were posted to the: staff ofthe New Zealaoo MaritimeHeadquarters in Auckland.
