IMAT1408Database Design Concepts

• This is one of four modules you will do this year (three if you are studying part-time)

• Covers the HND requirements for Databases

If you put effort into this module you will find projects much easier next year.

Teaching schedule• See separate plan• Check your timetable - each week you should have

– One lecture– One tutorial– One lab.

Access• We will use Microsoft Access 2007 in the Labs• Many of you have used Access before – we will probably use it differently• We will be using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) together with MS-Access• If you have not used Access tell me.

Access continued• You will need to work on Access after lessons:

– It is available on nearly all University PCs –You may have Access on your own PC–We are currently using Access 2007. Working at home is fine as long as the version of ACCESS you have installed is compatible.

Assessment

• 70% of the module marks come from coursework • Assignments and vivas with your tutor throughout the

year – you must submit work on time and be present for the vivas.

• Database Development Project in the second term• Module schedule gives dates when assignments are

handed out and when they are due in • There are severe penalties for late work and copying.

Assessment continued• 30% of the module marks come from the exam (in May)• You need 40% on the module to pass• You must pass to get into the 2nd year• It is easiest to pass if you come to all your classes and complete the work (yourself).

Resources

• Lecture notes will be provided for each lecture on Blackboard

• References are given at the end of lectures for additional information. Find the books in the library, you do not have to buy them

• Tutorial and lab exercises will be supplied as handouts or workbooks.

Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

• This module is supported on the University VLE, which is called Blackboard

• Everyone is registered on Blackboard when they enrol at DMU. If you have problems, contact the Student Advice Centre

• Check Blackboard regularly for messages and additional materials

• Course materials will be added to Blackboard• Reading the notes on Blackboard is not a substitute for

attending classes.

Tasks for this week

• Identify your tutorials and labs• Go to the library and find the database books • Get your password and user id before your lab

session• If you have not used Access before tell your

tutor in your first lab session• After your lab, finish setting up the Phones

database.

Finally

• You have to pass this module before you can go into year 2

• You get one attempt at each assessment during the year • If you do not attend a viva or do not hand in an

assignment without good reason you get 0% for it • The module Resit is in August by exam only (no

coursework)• It is easiest to complete the module first time through by

attending lessons and doing the work on time.
