1. Welcome and Introduction to HND Fine Arts: Methods and Materials Welcome to the HND Fine Arts: Methods and Materials course. The HND in Art and Design will provide learners with an opportunity to explore a number of creative disciplines. The first year of the course is strongly weighted towards practical workshops and assignments that encourage learners to develop and hone their procedural skills. This will include techniques to establish effective workshop practice such as mixing paint pigments and stretching a canvas, carving wood and stone, printmaking techniques from traditional woodcuts to screen printing and utilising drawing systems. The second year of the course will provide the opportunity for learners to focus on fewer of the creative disciplines studied in the first year, yet explore a select few skills in much greater depth. These would act as a platform to produce innovative and independent art and design work that will be communicated to a wide audience and, in turn form the basis of a portfolio to secure a place on the final year of a BA. Aims of the Programme: The programme will: 1. Develop an understanding of a wide range of procedural skills for use as a

practicing artist.

2. Provide a contextual framework for a creative practitioner.

3. Develop the appropriate skills and approaches for progression to

employment.

4. Provide opportunities to exhibit work in the public arena.

5. Provide an opportunity to develop an individual Fine Art identity.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes: By the end of this programme the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate and apply knowledge and understanding of the principal

theories, methods and skills in Fine Art, including their development.

2. Critically analyse and demonstrate appropriate organisational and creative

skills in a range of settings.

Brief Description of the Programme The HND in Art and Design will provide learners with an opportunity to explore a number of creative disciplines. The first year of the course is strongly weighted towards practical workshops and assignments that encourage learners to develop and hone their procedural skills. This will include techniques to establish effective workshop practice such as mixing paint pigments and stretching a canvas, carving wood and stone, printmaking techniques from traditional woodcuts to screen printing and utilising drawing systems. Each of the skill-sets will be independently applied to a ‘live’ brief or simulated professional work in the later stages of assignments to encourage learners to be aware of the transition from the acquired skills to their role and function in the creative industry. Critical contextual studies forms a core throughout all units and on both years of the course. The second year of the course will provide the opportunity for learners to focus on fewer of the creative disciplines studied in the first year, yet explore a select few skills in much greater depth. These would act as a platform to produce innovative and independent art and design work that will be communicated to a wide audience and, in turn form the basis of a portfolio to secure a place on the final year of a BA.

Unit Descriptors Unit 1: Visual Communication in Art and Design Unit code: J/601/6374 QCF level: 4 Credit value: 15 • Aim This unit aims to develop the necessary skills for artists, designers and craftworkers to communicate their ideas across specialist applications, both traditional and alternative. • Unit abstract Learners will be expected to develop an understanding of the role and responsibilities of the artist, designer and craftworker in a commercial context and to acquire the ability to communicate ideas through drawing and other visual techniques and skills. Learners need to engage in integrated research to include analysis of the brief, preparation of initial ideas, market research, investigation and practical exploration into materials, processes and techniques. Learners will need to explore the visual and tactile properties and characteristics of materials. They will also need to investigate contexts and demonstrate the ability to select and interpret research information through design development. This will necessitate practical first-hand experience in manipulating materials to meet requirements of briefs. It is important that a level of practical competence is shown in studio and workshop practice combined with evidence of an awareness of relevant safe working practice. Learners will need to gain a thorough understanding of design practice, relevant legislation, including health and safety, public liability and copyright law. Learners should keep records of all professional practice (meetings, attendance, punctuality, contracts etc) and provide evidence of the correct use of terminology and vocabulary in written and oral presentation.
