DICTIONARY OF NORTH AMERICAN HYMNOLOGYBIBLIOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICAN HYMNALS BY DENOMINATION

STONE / CAMPBELL MOVEMENTEARLY YEARS THROUGH 1955*

Materials from both Standard Publishing Company and Christian Board of Publications were used by some Independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ (instrumental), and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) churches for much of the first half of the twentieth century.

By the 1940s, Standard Publishing Co. had become increasingly recognized as the publisher of materials for Independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ (instrumental). Christian Board of Publication, later Bethany Press, and still later Chalice Press became the primary publishers for The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

While the bibliography lists hymnals by denomination, the lines were not so easily drawn until the 1950s, when some congregations officially withdrew their names from membership in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Yearbook of Churches, thus becoming “independent” congregations, and tending to use materials from Standard Publishing Company more.

As a result of both groups sometimes using the materials of both publishers from 1927 (the first break between Disciples of Christ and what later came to be known as independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ) through the 1940s, the following document contains hymnals from both groups in this period. The separate documents for each group also contain hymnals from this period, listed simply at the “judgment call” of the bibliographer. It is also possible that one book is listed in the bibliographies for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ (instrumental)

The break that created “churches of Christ (a cappella)” was more official, with the request of David Lipscomb that these churches be listed separately in the U. S. Census of Churches in 1906. In the document that follows some earlier books are listed from publishers that later became more distinctly church of Christ publishers. Following 1906 the break was more consistently universal than was the case with “Disciples” and “Independents.”

In these early years of the movement, at least two families affiliated with the Christian Church were active American musicians, owners of music companies, composers, and music publishers. These were the Hackleman and Fillmore families. Among

their companies’ publications were numerous gospel song books and song books for schools. Whenever a book was published by either of these two family companies and was clearly a book for use in church congregational singing, I have included that publication in these lists. Other music books (school music texts, church choir books) published by these two family companies are not included.

A date separating The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ (instrumental), is difficult to determine until the action called Restructure in the General Assembly of the Disciples of Christ in the med-1960s. At that time many congregations withdrew their names from the Yearbook of Christian Churches, making official the separation of those congregations from the Disciples of Christ.

These congregations chose not to engage in the Restructure process. Their withdrawal of the name of their congregation constituted their becoming “independent” congregations, no longer affiliated with the Disciples of Christ. Even among the Disciples of Christ, congregations were more loosely affiliated until Restructure. In fact, this group chose, by the process called Restructure, to make official what they perceived they had been for some time: a denomination. Furthermore, not until Restructure did the denomination adopt the official name “The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)”.

“Independent” congregations, by withdrawing their names from the Yearbook, also made official a status that they too perceived to have been the case for some time. How long? The answer to that question is difficult to determine.

In the years leading up to the mid 1950s, the lines of two separate groups were not so firmly drawn. Two conventions existed from 1927—the International Convention of the Disciples of Christ and the North American Christian Convention. The former was the predecessor of the General Assembly of the Disciples of Christ. The latter eventually became the convention of Independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ (instrumental).

Two separate publishing companies also existed in these years: Christian Board of Publication and Standard Publishing Company. The former of these later became Bethany Press, the official publishing house of the Disciples of Christ. The latter became the publishing house of Independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ (instrumental).

However, from 1927 until the mid 1950s, many of the same people attended both conventions. Many of the same speakers appeared on the platforms of both conventions. Both publishing houses exhibited at both conventions; hence, the difficulty of identifying two distinct and official groups and their hymnals until the mid 1950s. The separations were in process, but not, by any

means, always evident, and never official until the 1950s. In fact, some congregations used hymnals from both publishers. Thus, the definition of “early” has been expanded to the 1950s.

On-line catalogs of institutional libraries and archives do not always list a book’s publisher. As a result, when more than one publisher sold the same hymnal in the same year, it was necessary to arbitrarily list a particular copy with one of the publishers.

I had difficulty confirming the Stone-Campbell connections of a few editors listed in the Dowling bibliography. Among these were W. T. Giffes and T. C. O’Kane. It is possible that Enos Dowling knew of the Stone-Campbell connections of these two men, so I have included their hymnals in this bibliography.

In documents for hymnals of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ (instrumental), and A Cappella Churches of Christ all entries are in alpha order by year. Entries in this document (Early Years through 1955) are so numerous that placing them all in alpha order would have been a monumental task. Consequently these entries are simply arranged in the appropriate year as I acquired the information about them. ______________________

*** Dowling’s Hymn and Gospel Song Books of the Restoration Movement: A Preliminary Bibliography lists this book, but does not show the location of a copy. The existence of the book can probably be inferred from an advertisement of the book which appears in another volume, or simply because Dowling knew of its existence.

**** The user of this bibliography will note that Christian Hymns was published in multiple editions with varying numbers of pages and hymns, even within the same year. I have sought to list each of these editions separately, but, because (a) details of the various editions are not always given in on-line catalogs of institutions, and (b) the extensive listings of these editions has been very difficult to keep separate, I cannot guarantee that the locations of copies are always accurate. Specifically, for a given year of this hymnal, I may have listed a 653 page edition as being at an institution that has an 840 page copy instead.
