Food for the Hun gryHillcrest NHS members reach out to help needy members of the community.By Chris Christenson

Last week the Hillcrest National Honor Society started their second community project of the year, a food drive. “The NHS has two service projects every year,” said Taylor Brue, one of the NHS members. “The first one we did was Salvation Army bell ringing, and so now for spring we’re doing a food drive for the Food Shelf.”

The drive started last week and will most likely go until spring break. There are two donation boxes set up at Hillcrest, one in front of the chapel and one in the Junior High. Any canned or boxed food is welcome.

look out into the crowd and I would notice that some people were crying or looked like they had been touched.”

The play was performed in the old gym on Thursday, March 31st and Friday, April 1st. It was written and directed by Sarah Larson.

April 8, 2011 the annual music tour begins, and for the next 16 days Hillcrest’s Concert Choir will be traveling around the Pacific Northwest and parts of Canada.

“I am really excited for this year’s tour!,“ said alto Marisa Monacelli. “It will be my first and sadly only one but I want to make the most of it. I think that a lot of memories will be made!”

The music tour is something that has been around for a very long time at Hillcrest. The tour happens every year but it switches

between the band and the choir. Next year will be the band’s turn. The tour also switches its destination. This year the choir is going to the Pacific Northwest, but others have gone to the East coast and to the Southwest.

The tour is a chance for students to not only go out and see different parts of the states, but also get the chance to share their gifts of music with other congregations. It is a chance to show what Hillcrest is all about and to promote Hillcrest as a

school. All the traveling is done by bus,

and the bus driver is the same every year, Dave Mansfield also known by the students as “Uncle Dave”. The chaperones are Mr. Jahr and Mrs. Howe, plus Mr. Strom.

The Choir leaves Friday morning to get started on the tour right away. They will be singing at Shiloh Christian Academy in Bismark for the students and sharing some time with them afterward. The Hillcrest choir will then be preparing for a concert that night.

Isn’t Basketba ll Over?Hillcrest Invitational Tournament starts this Friday.By Frankie Sandnes

The Hillcrest Invitational Tournament (HIT), is taking place this weekend in Fergus Falls. Sixty church and alumni teams from all over the Midwest are coming to the tournament, from as far away as Westby, Wis., to the east and Williston, N.D., to the west.

HIT has been going on since 1966. In the beginning 8 to 10 teams attended, and they only used the old gym. Now the number of courts and teams has grown dramatically: 60 teams, 580 players, 8 courts and 94 games.

For the past six years the event has been organized by Charlie Brue, teacher and coach at Hillcrest. “My favorite part of the HIT is seeing some teams come back year after year,” said HIT Director Charlie Brue.

The games are going to be held in five gyms: both Hillcrest gyms, Cleveland, and the Maroon and Gold gyms, both at the Fergus Falls High School.

All levels of talent are welcome in the tournament. The players’ ages range from ages 12 to 55. The teams are divided into seven divisions from D-1 down to D-3B. Classic division is in the middle, for older players who still love to play basketball. “I think every bracket is going to be very competitive,” said Mr. Brue. “You can’t predict who is going to win.”

The tournament is two days long. On Saturday all of the finals are going to be held in the Hillcrest New Gym except for D-3B. The D-1 final is also going to have a dunk contest during half-time.

The weekend is always a fun and exciting time. Players and fans return year after year for this annual event.

Home RunBaseball season starts up.By Frankie Sandnes

The Baseball team started tryouts and practice three weeks ago inside, since the snow is still here. About 40 kids showed up to play, but some had to be let go. The team practices every weekday, hitting, throwing and fielding.

Mr. Undseth is the varsity coach this year and only has

high hopes for this season. The varsity team has players ranging from freshmen to seniors and it looks promising.

The first game of the season was supposed to be last Monday on April 4. Unfortunately it had to be rescheduled, considering the fields are soaking wet from

the melting snow. The Junior Varsity team

has a new coach this year, Mr. Preston. The team integrates Junior High and High School players. Although there is a big age difference, it’s a good chance to connect the older guys with the younger ones.

TIDBITScompiled by Frankie SandnesRachael Synstelien and Elizabeth Harris gave Josh Overgaard, Erick Vestol, and Alex Stilwell brownies with laxatives in them. Kristina Senum prank-called her cousin Dillon O’Sullivan and actually thought she’d get away with it. Twelve girls stayed back from the Mall of America on Saturday and watched a total of seven movies. Varsity softball beat varsity baseball in a wiffle ball game.

A nd They’re Off…The Hillcrest track team lace up their running shoes and prepare for the season.By Chris Christenson

Track & Field is already in its fourth week here at Hillcrest. The team, which numbers over 25 this year, represents a healthy range of grade and experience. Practices are scheduled every weekday and include everything from grueling interval workouts to relaxed jogs.

As usual, this year’s team is led by Head Coach Allen Aase. Senior Christina Hardie is also helping out, coaching the shot putters and discus throwers.

Although it’s not yet set in stone, the track team’s first meet might be on Thursday against

Battle Lake. If the coaches aren’t able to schedule it, the team’s first

“I have high expectations for this season” said senior captain Andrea Christenson, “We have a lot of girls coming out and a lot of really good players!”

The girls’ softball team has started practices. The head coach this year is Craig Nersten and the captains are seniors Marisa Monacelli and Andrea Christenson. The girls have their first game on Tuesday April 26 against Ashby.

“We have a lot of good players going out this year and I’m excited to see what this year will bring.“ said Marisa, “It will be interesting to see how our first game goes after the spring

break, but it should be a lot of fun!”

A Night of Fun[d raisin g]The junior class hosts the Talent Show 2011 to raise money for next year’s Dominican trip.By Chris Christenson

Last Sunday the Talent Show, hosted by the junior class, drew a crowd of students and parents with its promise of, if anything, an amusing night. However, this year’s show was about more than just a fun time. The real purpose was to raise money for the Dominican Republic mission trip next year.

In the few weeks leading up to the show, there was some speculation as to whether or not it would be canceled like last year. But, to the relief of many, things started to pick up as the day drew nearer. “I was a bit worried because things were coming in slow,” said Mark Undseth, organizer and co-host. “But we

got a handful of acts the weekend before so that was really helpful.”

By Sunday there were around 20 live acts and videos on the list and, with performances ranging from choreographed dances to piano solos, there were even a few surprises snuck in. A total of five girls were asked to JS during the show, one in a song and four in a mock game show skit.

Craig Nersten led a team of judges who voted on a winner for each of the categories and one overall winner. The Tuscarora crew took home Best of Show for their group dance.

By the end of the night no one could have said the show wasn’t a success, and everyone had

decided on their own favorite act. “I really liked Zach and Taylor’s Mexican song,” said Mark.

Dancing the Af tern oon AwayMr. Quam’s Spanish classes take a field trip down to Minneapolis.By Chris Christenson

Last Friday students from the combined Spanish classes at HLA took a trip down to Minneapolis for an outside-the-classroom lesson in Spanish culture.

The group, led by Spanish teacher Mr. Quam, spent the day watching traditional dances from different Spanish speaking countries. After the performances, the students were invited onstage

to participate. “We had some people go up afterwards and dance the Macarena,” said Gracia Larson.

While some of the higher-level classes were assigned a report of the day written in Spanish, most were able to just come along, relax and enjoy the show. “[We learned] how dance and music is pretty important to them [Spanish speaking cultures], and how they express their traditions,”
