1.0 Introduction
This section looks into the background of the study, the statement of the problem, the
objectives of the study, methods used and the limitation of the study.
1.1. Background Information
Internet is a virtual technology that allows human to access unlimited things beyond
boundary. According to Bellis, Tim Berners-Lee is the inventor and developer of the internet,
followed by Vinton Cerf. Different people use internet in different way. Most common uses
of internet are to meet new people, business, products and services, research, education,
travel, marketing and sales, job searches, love, healing, invention, online shopping, organizing events, non-profits website and so on.
The internet is the fastest growing communication technology. Today, survival in
academics without the internet is hard to imagine. The students have different options to use
the internet. Most of the students are found to use the internet for preparing the assignments,
presentations, study and news. However, the internet has also its own disadvantages as
example plagiarism among students. Other than that, most of the student spent their time on
internet by doing useless things.
Temmel (no date) says that the internet has changed the students life enormously as it
brings many advantages. One of the advantages is faster development in which the students
can exchange experiences, ideas and start a new business. Next, the students can accessinternet easily to get information. The other advantages is the students can communicate with
other people in the world as there is no limitation when use the internet.
Internet can bring advantages as well as disadvantages to its users. People in public
often misuse the internet such as hacking others account for personal benefit, plagiarism
which often happen among the students and others. There are a few steps that can be taken by
the users to avoid such these problems. According to Wilson (no date), do protect your online
identity, install monitor and block software on computers and site the resource and give credit
when you are taking any information on the internet.
1.2. Statement of Problems
Students face many problems when they throw themselves into the virtual world;
internet. One of the problems is that the students will easily get addicted to the internet when
they started online. According to Mentzer (2003), a psychologist, Jennifer R. Ferris believe
that addiction of internet is really a psychological disorder. This means that the internetaddiction really could not be avoided once the users started to surf it. Besides that, one of the
famous problems is plagiarism. Students in the past did researches and collect information
manually when they were assigned with a task. This allows them to have deeper
understanding about the research they did and come up with new brilliant idea. Meanwhile,

students nowadays mostly used internet to search for information rather than doing it
manually since this method saves their time, energy and more convenient. But, the problem is
copying information from the internet without legal permissions lead to plagiarisms and thus
making the quality of modern students not as great as the students in the past.
1.3. Objectives of the Study
The following are the objectives of
a) To determine why students surf the internet.
b) To determine the types of website students usually browse.
c) To determine the average time student spend on the internet.d) To investigate the student opinion on the effect of internet in their life.
1.4. Methodology and Limitations of the Study
To gather information for this report, 30 questionnaires were distributed to the
students of Universiti Teknologi Mara Malaysia (UiTM) Shah Alam randomly. In
addition, scholarly database were used to research the topics of the usage of internet
among the students.
