About OpenStackOpenStack is open source software for setting up a cloud environment of theIaaS layer. By linking components, OpenStack automatically combinesnecessary resources from the hardware resource pool that contains servers,storages, and network devices to provide users or groups with a private-server environment.

The list of the main OpenStack components is shown in the following table.

Cinder overviewCinder is an OpenStack service component that provides persistent blockdevice storage to VM OpenStack Compute instances as a volume. Data in aCinder volume persists (remains undeleted) when the volume is detachedfrom a VM instance. Since the data remains on the block devicecorresponding to the volume, it can always be reattached by changing theconnection to other VM instances. In addition, high I/O performance isexpected because it has direct access to the block device corresponding tothe volume from the VM.

Storage providers include a Cinder driver for their storage devices so theycan be used to provide storage in an OpenStack environment.

Cinder commandsThe OpenStack Cinder commands can operate backends through theOpenStack Cinder API. Before using the commands, you must configure theavailable Keystone user authentication for the environment variables.

The OpenStack configuration installer included in each distribution createsthe file containing the authentication information on the controller node. Loadthis file into the environment variables using the source command. Thefollowing is an example of an OpenStack environment configuration with thepackstack command for the Red Hat OpenStack Platform.

# source /root/keystonerc_admin

Authentication information for admin user is described in keystonerc_adminand placed under /root.

For details about Cinder command options, see the help message output byentering the following:

Backend storage management configurationHitachi Block Storage Driver for OpenStack uses thin-provisioned volumes(DP-VOLs) from Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning (HDP) pools as backendstorage (an Hitachi storage feature that provides virtual volume capability).To use multiple DP pools, register each DP pool as a separate backendstorage. Each DP pool will be identified in the cinder.conf file.

Volume operationHitachi Block Storage Driver for OpenStack provides volume operationfunctions for managing LDEVs (logical devices or logical units) in the backendstorage (DP pools). The figure below shows an overview of volumeoperations.

Create and delete a volume

When Block Storage Driver for OpenStack receives the Cinder create volumerequest, it creates a virtual volume (DP-VOL) as a logical device (LDEV) fromthe DP pool. DP-VOLs allow the storage to be provisioned on an as-neededbasis. Volumes can be deleted by using the Cinder delete volume command.

Extend a volume

Block Storage Driver for OpenStack allows you to resize the DP-VOL,ensuring that the volume can be expanded to meet changing businessrequirements.

Note:• You cannot expand DP-VOLs created by Cascade Thin Image (Clone)

during asynchronous copying or DP-VOLs which have pair volumes thatwere created by Cascade Thin Image (Snapshot).

• When performing volume operation (except delete) on a volume after youfailed to expand it, you should change the volume state with cindercommands.

Copy operationsWhen the Block Storage Driver for OpenStack receives a Cinder copy volumerequest, the Block Storage Driver for OpenStack copies the volume in full

using Cascade Thin Image (Clone), and takes a point-in-time snapshot of thevolume using Cascade Thin Image (Snapshot). In addition, snapshots formultiple volumes in a consistency group can be taken at the same point-in-time to ensure data consistency.

Before you attempt to copy a volume attached to a VM, stop I/O on the VM.

The following table describes the copy methods available for Block StorageDriver for OpenStack. You can select any of the copy methods that arelicensed on the storage system.

Create a snapshot

Upon receiving a Cinder create snapshot request, the Block Storage Driver forOpenStack creates an LDEV linked to the snapshot, and then copies thesnapshot data from the volume to the LDEV using one of the available copy

methods (see previous table). The snapshot cannot be attached to a VM, butit can be kept as a data backup.

Create a volume from a snapshot

Upon receiving a Cinder create volume from snapshot request, the BlockStorage Driver for OpenStack creates an LDEV linked to the volume, and thenstores the specified snapshot data to the LDEV using one of the availablecopy methods (see previous table). For example, if data becomes corrupted,you can restore it using another volume that was created from a snapshot.

Create a volume from a volume (clone)

Upon receiving a Cinder create volume from volume (clone) request, theBlock Storage Driver for OpenStack creates an LDEV linked to the volume,and then stores the specified volume data in the LDEV using one of theavailable copy methods (see previous table). Volume cloning is useful whenmultiple users use the same data.

Restore a volume from a snapshot

If data in a volume is corrupted, the Cinder snapshot function restores thedata by creating a new volume from the snapshot; however, free space istemporarily consumed by the new volume and you must change the VM fromthe corrupted volume to the newly created volume. By using the snapshot orvolume restore operation, you can restore the corrupted volume withouthaving to create a new one.

Create a consistency group

Block Storage Driver for OpenStack enables you to create or deleteconsistency groups. Creating or deleting a consistency group does not makechanges to the backend storage unless you add volumes to, or delete existingvolumes from, the consistency group. When there are volumes in theconsistency group, the driver deletes the LDEVs allocated to the volumes inthe consistency group (the --force flag must be used to delete thevolumes).

You can create a consistency group from a source consistency group. TheBlock Storage Driver for OpenStack creates DP-VOLs in the backend storageto copy data from the volumes of the source consistency group. When datacopy is complete, the driver updates the status for the consistency group toreflect the new DP-VOLs.

The driver works similarly when creating a consistency group from asnapshot of another consistency group. It creates DP-VOLs to copy data fromthe specified snapshot of the other consistency group. When data copy iscomplete, the driver updates the status for the consistency group to reflectthe new DP-VOLs.

Note:• Data consistency between the source and destination consistency groups is

not maintained.

Update a consistency group

You can modify the name and description of a consistency group, as well asadd or remove volumes to or from a consistency group.

Create a snapshot of a consistency group

When the Block Storage Driver for OpenStack receives a command to createa snapshot of a consistency group, it creates volumes in the backend to storethe snapshot of the volumes in the specified consistency group at the samepoint-in-time. It does this by creating copy pairs specified by the consistencygroup option.

Note: You cannot restore from a snapshot of a consistency group created byCascade Thin Image (Snapshot).

Volume attachmentBlock Storage Driver for OpenStack supports storage attachment capabilityfor Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel over Ethernet storage. BlockStorage Driver for OpenStack supports multipath configurations. Thefollowing figure shows an overview of the volume attachment operations.

Upon receiving a Cinder attach volume request, Block Storage Driver forOpenStack attaches a volume to a VM in the specified compute node. BlockStorage Driver for OpenStack then directly connects the Hitachi storage andthe compute. This allows the VM to access the attached volume to store data.The volume can also be detached from the VM. When you detach the volume,the data stays in the detached volume. The volume can be attached again toanother VM. Block Storage Driver for OpenStack allows volume attach anddetach operations in a multipath configuration.

Configure node settingYou can use the OpenStack configuration installer provided by eachdistribution to build the controller node and compute nodes beforehand. It isrecommended to use a multi-node configuration in which the controller nodeand the compute node use separate data path. Some OpenStackconfiguration installers might require you to specify a cinder driver whendeploying Cinder component. When prompted, specify another driver such asNFS (as you cannot select Block Storage Driver for OpenStack at this time)and install the cinder driver after the deployment. Refer to online resourcesfor the usage of OpenStack configuration installer provided by eachdistribution. After building the controller node and the compute nodes,configure each node as described in the following table.

Supported OpenStack configurationsThis topic describes the supported OpenStack configurations and examples ofa few different configuration scenarios.

Single controller nodeA single OpenStack controller node is connected to the storage system. Thefollowing figure shows a supported single controller node configuration.

Storage resources managed by OpenStack Controller Nodes cannot be sharedwith any other non-OpenStack management nodes. The following figureshows an example configuration in which the OpenStack controller node isshared with another non-OpenStack management node. This configuration isnot supported.

Multi-system configurationStorage resources managed by the OpenStack controller node and non-OpenStack management node must be separated. The following figure showsan example of supported mix-purposed multi-system configurations.

Active-standby for controller nodesThe storage node is shared by an active controller node and multiple standbycontroller nodes. The following figure shows an example of supported active/standby configurations. Note that the maximum number of controller nodes

allowed in an HA cluster depends on the specifications of the OpenStackdistribution in use. In addition, storage resources managed by OpenStackController Nodes cannot be shared with any other non-OpenStackmanagement nodes.

Environment setupIt is necessary to configure the storage device to allow Block Storage Driverfor OpenStack to use it. Refer to the documentation provided with thestorage device for details.

Pre-check storage settingMake sure that the storage device is configured and ready for volumeoperations. Use the storage management software to confirm that LDEVs canbe created, connected to controller node or compute nodes, asynchronouslycopied, and host groups can be created.

Connect nodesConnect the controller node with each compute node and then connect allnodes with the storage device. Block Storage Driver for OpenStack managesthe ports used by the controller node and the ports used by the computenodes separately. Follow the operation guidelines for your environment toconfigure the node connection.

The following figure shows an example of node configuration for VSP G seriesand VSP F series storage systems.

Single node configurationHitachi Block Storage Driver for OpenStack allows single node configurationswhere a single server is configured to serve the role of the controller nodeand the compute node. There are a few operation restrictions to note for asingle node environment. These operations cause I/O disruptions and requireyou to detach a volume to perform the operation, and reattach the volume.

• If a DP-VOL is attached, you cannot copy the volume to images.• If a read-only volume is attached, you cannot create volumes for the

original snapshot for the volume.

Controller node without I/O data pathsIn Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Ubuntu OpenStack, you can use theconfiguration on the Controller node without I/O data paths such as shown inthe following image. This configuration is a viable solution if you do not wantto give up Fibre Channel ports for management (out-of-band).

Note: You cannot use this configuration in SUSE OpenStack Cloud or MirantisOpenStack.

The user groups have management privileges for the created Resource-Group. You can also use the built-in Storage Administrator (View & Modify)user group. If the driver uses multiple backends for the storage, use thesame account name and password for all backends. If multiple devices areused by the driver, use the same user account and password and alignresource groups and permissions for all of the devices used.

DP pool • Create a DP pool that is used by Block Storage Driver for OpenStackbackend. The driver manages virtual capacity (capacity reserved forover-provisioning of the actual pool capacity). Set a propersubscription limit for your environment. For example, a 100%subscription limit means that space for only actual capacity isguaranteed.

• Use a pool that is not assigned to a virtual storage machine. Youcannot use DP-VOLs that are assigned to a virtual storage machine orvolumes that have been migrated from another system usingnondisruptive migration.

TI pool Create a TI pool if you are using Cascade Thin Image.

Ports • Enable Port Security for port used by the driver.• If you change port configuration used by the driver for connection,

restart the openstack-cinder-volume service. Failing to restart theservice could cause attach or detach volume operation to fail.

Host group for storagecontrol path

Manually configure the host group assigned to the controller node so thatthe controller node communicates with the storage device via thecommand device (in-band).

This is not required for a virtual command device (out-of-band) in Red HatOpenStack Platform 10.• Create a command device (in-band) with an LDEV assigned to a

resource group created for OpenStack, and set command deviceattributes as follows:○ Security is disabled○ User Authentication is enabled○ Device Group Definition is disabled

• Manually create a host group for the port used for storage control pathand manually configure WWN, ports, and Fibre Channel zoning for yourenvironment. The ports used for storage control path can also be usedfor I/O data path. In this case, create a host group for I/O data path(described below).

• Map the command device (in-band) to the newly created host groupfor the controller node.

Host group for I/Odata path

Manual configuration:• Create a host group for the port that connects the controller node and

compute nodes. In multipath configuration, create host group for allconnecting pots.

• For a multipath configuration, the LDEV numbers and the connectionorder (LUN) must match within each host group of the target node. Ifthey do not match, change each LDEV connection accordingly to matcheach LUN.

• The host group must to be named “<HBSD-target host WWPN>” (forexample, HBSD-0123456789ABCDEF).

• Specify <HBSD-target host WWPN> using the WWN of the smallestport number used for the connecting node.

• Register the WWN of the connecting node in the newly created hostgroup.

Automatic configuration:• Automatically creating the host group requires that the

hitachi_group_request parameter to be True. In addition, to addLDEVs to a host group being created at the same time, Fibre Channelswitches must be used to connect the storage and the node, and theFibre Channel Zoning Manager must be enabled.

• Upon a cinder volume attach request, the driver automatically createsa host group for the VM port specified in hitachi_target_ports orhitachi_compute_target_ports if there is no host group defined forthe port.

• In absence of existing host groups, the driver automatically createsone when copying a volume using copy functions on the storagesystem. Do not manually create or delete host names HBSD-pairXX(XX: number).

• The driver creates host groups and registers all WWNs for all portsspecified in the hitachi_target_ports orhitachi_compute_target_ports parameter. Deleting host groupsautomatically requires the hitachi_group_delete parameter to be setto True.

Fibre Channel zoning Manual configuration:• For Fibre Channel switches between a node and the storage device,

manually configure zoning.

Automatic configuration:• When the driver attaches a volume to the target VM, Fibre Channel

zoning manager automatically creates zoning between the target nodeand the port used by the driver.

• Fibre Channel zoning manager must be enabled, andhitachi_zoning_request is True.

System reboots If the host groups for a controller node and compute node are createdmanually, reboot the nodes to recognize these paths. If a new computenode is added and the host group for the node is created manually, rebootis necessary for only this node.

VSP G series and VSP F series (iSCSI connectivity)The following table describes the several iSCSI storage configurationrequirements.

iSCSI target for storagecontrol path

Manually configure the iSCSI target for the controller node so that thecontroller node communicates with the storage device via thecommand device (in-band). This is not required for a virtual commanddevice (out-of-band) in Red Hat OpenStack Platform 10.• Create a command device (in-band) with an LDEV assigned to a

resource group created for OpenStack, and set command deviceattributes as follows:○ Security is disabled○ User Authentication is enabled○ Device Group Definition is disabled

• Manually create an iSCSI target for the port used for storagecontrol path and manually configure Initiator IQN and portsdepending on your environment. The ports used for storagecontrol path cannot be used for I/O data path and separate portmust be used for each path.

• Map the command device (in-band) to the newly created iSCSItarget for the controller node.

• Connect an iSCSI session to storage by using iscsiadm commandon the controller node. You must start the iscsi service and theiscsid service automatically for automatic recognition of thecommand device at the system start. Refer to the Linux onlineresources for online manual for more information.

iSCSI target for I/O datapath

Manual configuration:• Create an iSCSI target for the port that connects the controller

node and compute nodes. In multipath configuration, create hostgroup for all connecting pots.

• The iSCSI target must to be named “HBSD-<my_ip>” (forexample, HBSD-10.20.30.40). Use the same IP address for my_ipthat you use for cinder or nova compute service in each node.

• Register the Initiator IQN of the connecting node in the newlycreated iSCSI target.

• Register the Target IQN in the newly created iSCSI target. In themultipath configuration, register the same target IQN in all iSCSItargets connected to a node.

• In the multipath configuration, set HostModeOption=83 on thecreated iSCSI targets.

• If CHAP authentication is used, register the HCAP user name andpassword with the iSCSI target. Use the same CHAP user andpassword for all iSCSI targets.

Automatic configuration:• When HBSD attaches a volume to a VM instance, HBSD

automatically creates an iSCSI target for the VM ports that arespecified in hitachi_target_ports orhitachi_compute_target_ports if no SCSI target exists for theports.

• In absence of existing iSCSI targets, HBSD automatically createsone when copying a volume using copy functions on the storage.Do not manually create or delete the iSCSI targets HBSD-pairXX(XX: number).

• Automatic creation of iSCSI targets requires that thehitachi_group_request parameter is True. HBSD creates iSCSItargets and registers all Initiator IQNs for all ports used by a nodethat are specified in the hitachi_target_ports orhitachi_compute_target_ports parameter. HBSD registers thetarget IQN <Initiator IQN for the target node>.target with theiSCSI targets.

• Deleting iSCSI targets automatically requires the parameterhitachi_group_delete to be True.

Considerations for multipath configurations:• For a multipath configuration, the LDEV numbers and the

connection order (LUN) must match within each iSCSI target ofthe target node. If they do not match, change each LDEVconnection accordingly to match each LUN.

• If the settings are automatic, HBSD will use the smallest availableiSCSI target number. Align the iSCSI target numbers that arealready being used for each port to force the iSCSI target IDscreated by HBSD to match.

Configure Command Control InterfaceThe Command Control Interface (CCI) software is used to manage VSP Gseries and VSP F series storage systems. CCI must be configured on the

controller node for each target storage device. Use the procedure below toconfigure CCI.

Procedure

1. Install CCI for the controller node by referring to the CCI documentationfor installation instructions.

2. Configure the command device (in-band) or the virtual command device(out-of-band) on the controller node for operating the target storage.

3. Perform the following steps for a command device (in-band):a. Confirm that the controller node recognizes the command device by

using inqraid command.

# /HORCM/usr/bin/inqraid -CLI /dev/sd*b. Create the configuration file for a horcm instance.

The horcmXXX.conf (XXX is the instance number used by the driver)is automatically created by default. If horcmXXX.conf does not existwhen the driver starts then the driver registers one command devicewith the storage device specified in the horcmXXX.conf file. If thehorcmXXX.conf file is created automatically, editing of the file is notnecessary.

c. Configure False for the hitachi_horcm_add_conf parameter toprevent the driver from overwriting the horcmXXX.conf. See theCommand Control Interface Installation and Configuration Guide formore details.

Note: If there are other backends, operation instance numberand pairing instance number must be different from those of theother backends. Do not use the instance number in use by otherapplications in the controller node.

4. Perform the following steps for a virtual command device (out-of-band):a. Verify that communication is enabled for a connection destination of

the virtual command device by using the ping command.

# ping <IP address of the connection destination of the virtual command device >

b. Manually create horcmXXX.conf for the horcm instance (XXX is theinstance number used by the driver) and describe the virtualcommand device information. See the CCI documentation for moredetails of horcmXXX.conf. In addition, configure False for thehitachi_horcm_add_conf parameter to suspend update ofhorcmXXX.conf when a backend of CCI starts.

Install Hitachi Block Storage Driver for OpenStackInstallation prerequisites

Following are the installation prerequisites for Block Storage Driver forOpenStack.• Verify that you have sufficient memory on the server.• The physical memory size required by the software is: 1 MB x the number

of backends x 2.• Verify that you have sufficient disk space required to install the driver. The

Normally, an Block Storage Driver for OpenStack configuration is added tothe configuration file /etc/cinder/cinder.conf provided by an openstack-cinder package. However, some OpenStack configuration installers might

automatically change the configurations of cinder.conf by runningconfiguration management software such as Puppet. This topic describesadditional necessary preparation steps and how to add the Block StorageDriver for OpenStack configuration, which vary depending on whichOpenStack configuration installer you use.

Using Director (Red Hat OpenStack Platform)A Puppet agent runs on the controller node when an OpenStack environmentis built with the Director. The Puppet agent resets cinder.conf for thecontroller node and any configuration you have built in the driver will be lost.To avoid this, disable Puppet agent on all the controller nodes.

# puppet agent --disable

To configure the driver, edit the configuration file /etc/cinder/cinder.confon all controller nodes.

Note: While the Puppet agent is being stopped, nodes cannot be added bythe Director. For this reason, if you need to add nodes, first back up thecinder.conf and run the Puppet agent, and then add nodes. When you havefinished adding nodes, disable the Puppet agent and restore the cinder.conffrom the backup.

Using Crowbar (SUSE OpenStack Cloud)A Chef agent runs on the controller node when an OpenStack environment isbuilt with Crowbar. Chef resets cinder.conf for the controller node, and anyconfiguration you have built in the driver will be lost. To resolve this issue,follow the procedure below to add your driver configuration to the Add NewCinder Backend page in the Crowbar WebGUI.

Procedure

1. Launch the WebGUI of Crowbar, and select OpenStack in theBarclamps menu.

2. Select Edit in Cinder.3. Select Other Driver in the Type of Volume menu in the Add new

Cinder Backend field. Click Add Backend to enter the name of thebackend.

4. Enter the driver path in the Driver field and the parameters in theOptions field for the backend you have added.

5. In the Deployment field, specify the controller node (only oneselectable) in the cinder-controller field. And specify the backend(s) inthe cinder-volume field.

6. Click Apply to save the configuration.

Linking a volume type and a backendFor creating an environment with multiple backends, you can create a volumetype and link it to a particular backend.

You can configure the backend specification (volume_backend_name) duringbackend setup by using the cinder command in the controller node where acinder volume is running.

Live migrationThe Cinder live migration capability allows you to migrate a VM to anotherhost for hardware maintenance and other purposes without disruptingworkloads. See online documentation such as OpenStack Cloud AdministratorGuide for details about the live migration function on Nova components andthe usage of the OpenStack configuration installer provided by thedistribution in use.

When you perform live migration using Block Storage Driver for OpenStack,follow theses guidelines:• Configure DM-Multipath in compute node by editing the configuration file

(for example, /etc/multipath.conf) and then restarting the multipathdaemon. See Set up redundant control paths to storage on page 57.○ user_friendly_names is set by “no”○ find_multipaths is set by “no”

DM-Multipath is required for performing live migration for both single andmultipath configurations.

Note:• Volume migration finishes even if it fails to delete the LDEV of the original

volume. In this case, delete it manually because the LDEV of originalvolume remains in storage.

Configure multipathingRedundant I/O data paths to the storage device enable continuous operationswhen one of the paths fails. Device mapper multipathing (DM-Multipath)provides path redundancy in OpenStack as illustrated in the figure in Connectnodes on page 37.

DM-Multipath creates and attaches a multi-path device (dm-X) to the VM.

Install the packages listed below on the controller nodes and compute nodes.• For Red Hat: sysfsutils, sg3_utils, iscsi-initiator-utils, and device-mapper-

Controller nodes:• Set “True” for the use_multipath_for_image_xfer parameter. List this

parameter in each backend definition section in the Cinder configurationfile.

• Configure DM-Multipath for the port in the Block Storage Driver forOpenStack parameter hitachi_target_ports andhitachi_compute_target_ports. List this parameter in each backenddefinition section in the Cinder configuration file.

• Start multipath daemon after configuring the DM-Multipath setting.

Compute nodes:• Set “True” for the volume_use_multipath parameter. List this parameter

in the libvirt section in the Nova configuration file.• Start multipath daemon after configuring the DM-Multipath setting.

Note:• A recommended value for the DM-Multipath varies depending on the

storage device. Refer to multipath configuration guidelines of your storagedevice.

• Configure the live-migration parameters to use live-migration (see Livemigration on page 56).

• Attach or detach volume operation of the volume may fail when one of theiSCSI paths fails. However, VMs that the volume is attached to can be usedwith the other path.

Set up redundant control paths to storageYou can ensure continuous storage operation by creating path redundancy forthe command device. If a problem is detected, operations can switch to thecommand device in stand-by to allow storage operations without disruption.See the figure in Connect nodes on page 37 for details about multipathingenabled for Block Storage Driver for OpenStack.

You must change the command device configuration to set up pathredundancy. Multipath settings for the command device are described below.See Cinder-specific parameters on page 88 for the parameter details, andCommand Control Interface User and Reference Guide for the CCI settingdetails.

Multipath connection to the command device:• Register a command device with all host groups or iSCSI targets for the

controller node.• Reboot the controller node to recognize all the command devices.• While using DM-Multipath on the Controller node, command devices should

not be used as a multi-path device. Register all command devices in themultipath.conf file’s blacklist to prevent DM-Multipath from creatingmultiple paths to the command device.

Block Storage Driver for OpenStack setting:• Set “False” for hitachi_horcm_add_conf so that the driver does not

update horcmXXX.conf.• Set separate instance numbers with hitachi_horcm_numbers parameter in

the cinder.conf file for each backend so that backends do not sharehorcm instances.

horcmXXX.conf:• List multiple command devices to be modified in a CMD line using the

format, which consists of storage identifier, LDEV number, port number,host group number, etc. Refer to Command Control Interface User andReference Guide for the details.

• List command devices for different storage devices in separate horcm filesinstead of listing them all in a single horcm instance.

Virtual command device (out-of-band)You can create redundant virtual command device management paths usingthe Linux standard network redundancy driver (bonding). However, unlike theVSP G1500/VSP F1500/VSP G1000 systems, for the two management portson the VSP Gx00/VSP Fx00 systems, you can make the connections to thestorage systems redundant using the virtual command device switchoverfeature provided by the CCI.

Note: The service processors (SVPs) in the VSP G1500/VSP F1500/VSPG1000 systems are already internally redundant, thus there is no need to usethe switchover function provided by the CCI.

Multipath settings for the virtual command device are described below. See Cinder-specific parameters on page 88 for the parameter details, andCommand Control Interface User and Reference Guide for the CCI setting

HBSD setting:• Set hitachi_horcm_add_conf to "False" so that HBSD does not update

horcmXXX.conf (XXX is an instance number):• List multiple virtual command devices to be changed in a CMD line. See

instead of listing them all in a single horcm instance.

Configure High AvailabilityHigh Availability overview

You can configure multiple controller nodes in a cluster to ensure high systemavailability. If one node fails, the system falls over to another node tocontinue operations without any disruption to the workloads. Each servicecan select Active-Standby or Active-Active configuration with Pacemaker.

However, Active-Standby is the only controller-node fail-over configurationsupported by HBSD.

Note: HBSD cannot be used in an High Availability (HA) configuration inSUSE OpenStack Cloud or Mirantis OpenStack. In addition, HA can detectsingle storage-control path failures, which can cause the cinder service toabend, but it may not be able to detect other types of failures.

Configure the Pacemaker configuration using the pcs command. Thefollowing example shows configuring 10s for the start-delay. You canreconfigure node behaviors after the node has been rebooted.

7. After starting the controller node, confirm that the backend of HBSD isrunning properly. See Verify Block Storage Driver for OpenStackinstallation on page 52. In addition, confirm that the cinder-volumeservice is running with Active-Standby configuration by using the pcsstatus command.

Note: Once the Puppet agent is stopped, nodes cannot be addedby Foreman. Back up the cinder.conf file and run Puppet agentand then add the node. After adding nodes, disable Puppet agentand restore cinder.conf from the backup.

Recoverable failuresWhen the system detects a storage control path failure that causes theCinder volume service to abend, it switches the failed component to thenormal one to continue the operations. Other types of failures might not bedetected and as a result the Cinder volume service becomes unavailable.

When the failed system switches over, the node associated with the failedsystem will reboot. During the reboot, all services on the node will becomeunavailable. You can reconfigure the node behaviors after it has beenrebooted. If you reconfigure the node to be added back to the cluster, theActive-Active services can be used as Active again.

Note: If the failed node is recovered and you want to switch the service backto the recovered node, make sure that there are no running snapshotvolumes on the failover node by using the cinder snapshot-list volumecommand before you switch the node back.

Handling HA post-failoverWhen a controller node fails while storage operations are in progress, theoperation target volumes might be left unprocessed in the storage. This maycause other operations that are involved with these resources to fail. Find theright actions by using the following steps.

Procedure

1. Check Pacemaker logs for the failover status and the time it hasoccurred.

2. If the failover has caused Cinder volume processing to stop, find thevolumes being processed using the cinder list command.

3. If the status of a volume is “creating” then go to step 4. Otherwise,perform the following steps:a. Get the metadata of the volume or the snapshot using the cinder

metadata-show command and identify the LDEV numberb. Find out the storage operation from the volume status.

c. From the LDEV number, get the storage operation details using themanagement software in use to restore to a normal state.

d. Change the status for the corresponding entry on CinderDB to“available” using the cinder reset-state command.

e. Go to the step 6.4. Identify the incomplete volume processing from the volume.log/

debug.log around the time the failover has occurred.5. Check if there are any LDEVs associated with the volume. If none, then

go to step 5d; if otherwise, perform the following steps:a. Obtain the pair information from the LDEV ID using the management

software. If a pair exists, delete it.b. If the LDEV is mapped to a host group or an iSCSI target, disable the

mapping.c. Delete the LDEV using the storage management software.d. Change the state of the volume to “available” using the cinder

reset-state command and delete the corresponding entry onCinderDB using the cinder delete command.

6. If there are any other volumes with incomplete processing, repeat steps3-5.

Performance factorsVarious factors in your operating environment can affect Block Storage Driverfor OpenStack performance, such as conditions of use that can cause time-outs in some situations. This topic describes reference performance metricsfor a multiple-VM OpenStack deployment from boot-volume.

Performance metrics for deploying multiple volumes using Cascade ThinImage (Clone/Snapshot)

When using VSP G1000, G1500, or F1500, you can use Cascade Thin Image(Clone/Snapshot). Reference performance metrics are described below forthe deployment of multiple VMs using Cascade Thin Image (Clone/Snapshot)and for snapshot acquisition from multiple volumes.

Copy methodsWhen using a Cascade Thin Image (Clone/Snapshot) copy method to clonevolumes or create volumes from snapshots, you can choose a copy methodavailable on the Hitachi backend storage: Cascade Thin Image (Clone) orCascade Thin Image (Snapshot).

Copy using Cascade Thin Image (Clone/Snapshot)

To use the Cascade Thin Image (Clone/Snapshot) copy method, you mustspecify the HDP pool. When launching Cascade Thin Image (Clone/Snapshot),you must set the DP-VOL type for the copy source volume to Normal or V-VOLv2. If you use Cascade Thin Image (Snapshot), when creating a volume,the type metadata for the volume will be V-VOLv2.

Volume copy without the consistency group option:

The storage function is determined based on the combination of the copysource volume type and what is defined in the Block Storage Driver forOpenStack hitachi_default_copy_method parameter or the copy_methodkey (the metadata for the volume or snapshot). The type of the volume beingused is stored in the metadata type key. The tables below show the copymethods (for non-consistency groups) when using Cascade Thin Image toclone volumes or to create volumes from snapshots. When you are using thesnapshot function, for non-consistency groups, you can only use CascadeThin Image (Snapshot).

Volume copy with the consistency group option:

For snapshots that use consistency groups, you can choose either CascadeThin Image (Clone) or Cascade Thin Image (Snapshot) for the storage copymethod. The storage copy method is determined by the values defined in thehitachi_default_copy_method and the hitachi_consisgroup_copy_methodparameters. The tables below show copy methods when using Cascade ThinImage (Clone) to clone volumes or create volumes from snapshots (forconsistency groups). When you are using the snapshot function, you can onlyuse Cascade Thin Image (Snapshot) for consistency groups, as well.

For consistency groups and non-consistency groups, you can choose eitherCascade Thin Image (Clone) or Cascade Thin Image (Snapshot) for bothvolume cloning and creating volumes from snapshots. However, if you useCascade Thin Image (Snapshot), once configured as a cascade, you will notbe able to delete any volumes in a branch. Therefore, it is generallyrecommended that you use Cascade Thin Image (Clone).

Restore a volume or snapshotIf you use Cascade Thin Image (Snapshot) to create snapshots or createcloned volumes to copy, you can specify the restore_from metadata torestore the data of a specified snapshot (volume) to the source volume. Adummy volume is created during restore. This dummy volume exists inCinder but does not have a V-VOLv2 or DP-VOL assigned in the backendstorage. Therefore, you must delete the dummy snapshot (dummy volume)that was created when the volume was copied.

To restore data after using the Create snapshot, specify a restoration sourcesnapshot (restore_snapid) for the restore_from key (metadata of thesource volume src_volid) to create a snapshot. Next, use the unset optionto invalidate the copy_method and restore_from metadata of the sourcevolume. Then delete the dummy snapshot (dummy_snapid).

The following shows the syntax for restoring data from the specifiedsnapshot.

The following shows the syntax for restoring data from a specific clonedvolume. The restoration source volume (restore_volid) for therestore_from key is specified to replicate the volume, and then the dummyvolume is deleted. The restore_from key is the metadata of the dummyvolume (dummy_volid).

The following example shows the commands used to create a volume from aspecific snapshot using Cascade Thin Image (Snapshot) as illustrated in thediagram.

Restoring from external storageUse the procedure listed below to restore a volume from external storage.

Procedure

1. Create the volume for the restore target beforehand. Note the LDEVmetadata value that can be acquired using the cinder metadata-showcommand.

2. Restore the volume from external storage. If the volume ID of therestore target is not specified, or if the specified volume ID is differentfrom the backed-up volume, the type and LDEV metadata for the restoretarget volume will not be consistent with the actual LDEV number.

3. Remove the metadata using the cinder metadata command. Use thesame command to restore the type and LDEV metadata values. Fordetails of these commands, see help messages or the Command-LineInterface Reference.

Port assignment for each volume type that can be attachedDefining particular ports in the Hitachi supported extra spechbsd:target_ports determines which of the ports specified in thehitachi_target_ports or the hitachi_compute_target_ports parametersare used to create LUN paths during volume attach operations for eachvolume type.

The following commands show an example of specifying ports using the extraspec.

Enabling dedupe/comp functionality

To use the dedupe/comp function, your storage administrator must firstenable the dedupe/comp function for the HDP pool.

For example, to enable dedupe/comp for a Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning(HDP) pool with a pool ID of 6 and specifying a yet unused LDEV with anLDEV ID of 1000 for creating a system data volume used for dedupe/comp,perform both steps listed below. The dedup/comp function uses the specifiedLDEV as the volume for managing the deduplication and compression.

Note: In the example above, -subscription 65535 sets the virtualization-excess ratio for the pool ID, where 65535 indicates that the virtualization-excess ratio is unlimited. If you set the virtualization-excess ratio to someother value, keep in mind that capacity for the system data volume is 40TB.

After enabling dedupe/comp for a Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning (HDP) pool,reference the pool information and verify that dedupe/comp is set. Runningthe command listed below displays all the pool information. In theinformation for all the pools, if the Num column of the target pool line is 1 ormore, dedupe/comp has been enabled for the target pool.

Creating a volume with dedupe/comp enabledTo use dedupe/comp, you must enable it when creating a volume.

Use the cinder command to specify the dedupe/comp setting for eachindividual volume. Once a volume is created, a DRD-volume is generated as aDP-VOL for which the dedupe/comp function is enabled.

Essentially, you must specify extra specs hbsd:capacity_saving for thevolume type.

Procedure

1. For volume type "extra specs", specify the setting to enable the dedupe/comp function.The example below shows how to enable the dedupe/comp function forvolume type VSP-G1500-1.

2. When creating a volume using the volume type created in the previousstep, you can create a volume with the dedupe/comp function enabled.

Check the version of Block Storage Driver for OpenStackThe first step in troubleshooting is to make sure you are running the desiredversion of Block Storage Driver for OpenStack that provides the Cinderfunctions you want to use.

If you encounter a problem, run the rpm or dpkg command to check theversion of the driver to make sure the intended version is installed. Volume operations fail in a multi-controller nodeenvironment

Verify that your OpenStack configuration is valid. Refer to SupportedOpenStack configurations on page 33.

Volume attach and detach operations failVolume attach and detach operations might fail when multiple volumeoperations are performed concurrently. This can be caused by time-outs thatoccur during the processing of the Cinder requests in the backends.

You can increase the timeout threshold for all the nodes by modifying therpc_response_timeout parameter to 3600 in the nova.conf ( /etc/nova/nova.conf) and the cinder.conf file (/etc/cinder/cinder.conf).

Volume detach operation failsVolume detach operations may fail because LUNs are in a state where theycannot be unmapped during the 3-minute period following I/O. To preventthis from occurring, set the I/O check suppression option (host mode option91) for the host group. If the hitachi_group_request parameter is set to

True, and if new host groups are created automatically, specify this option bysetting the hitachi_horcm_disable_io_wait parameter to True.

Note: Setting the I/O check suppression option (host mode option91) enables volumes to be detached even during disk input/output, which may damage the file system. Set it so that volumesare detached after input/out has completed.

Volume attach performance issues after HBA replacementReplacing a host bus adapter (HBA) in a multipath configuration can impactprocessing of volume attach requests in backend storage devices.

Make sure that the host group for the HBA has been updated after thereplacement. If you have not already updated the host group name, withStorage Navigator, change the name to "HBSD-xxx" where xxx is thesmallest WWPN number available for the server.

When migrating to a new volume that has an attached Cascade Thin Image(Snapshot) pair, although the migration destination volume is createdproperly, the source volume cannot be deleted. This causes an error_deletingstatus. To delete the source volume, first delete all Cascade Thin Image(Snapshot) pairs attached to the source volume, then delete the sourcevolume itself.

Volume deletion causes error statusWhen deleting many volumes in one operation, some of the volumes mayresult in an error_deleting status. If this happens, enter the cinder reset-state command. Verify volume status has returned to available, then retrydeleting the volume(s).
