1600’sNipmuc Tribe
Who were the Nipmucs of Hampton in the 1600’s? They liked to eat corn, beans, deer and fish. They liked to dance, sing and gamble. To get their meat, they get their meat by hunting .
1600’sWampum
Wampum is made out of clam shells.Nipmucs used it for trading and they wore necklaces and bracelets.
1600’sCorn Husk Dolls
Why don’t corn husk dolls have a face?
Nipmuc children would play with the corn husk dolls. The story is that she doesn’t deserve one because she was bragging that her face was so beautiful. So the Great Spirit said she doesn’t deserve a face and now they are made with no faces.

Peter Foster did and this was the largest family to ever join any military in America.

He could paint pictures that look like the real face. He could not talk or hear so used his own hand signals.

What was made in Hampton during the 1700s? They made buttons, eyeglasses and brooms. Cider and making shingles were also made in Hampton. There were mills along the Little River.
1786Incorporation of Hampton
When did Hampton become a town?It became a town in 1786. Before that it was part of Windham, Brooklyn, Mansfield and Pomfret. At that time the population was 1,333.

Was there ever a Connecticut governor from Hampton?
Yes, his name was Chauncey Fitch Cleveland. He made a train stop in Hampton so he could travel from Hartford to Hampton.

Did you know that Hampton ‘s fire department started in 1929 ? There are about 25 members. They respond to about 70 calls a year to battle fires. Sometimes there are house fires.

There were one room school houses and about 7 schools over the years in Hampton.
Right now the main school is Hampton Elementary School.
