MLS and the regulations and rules of soccer. After learning the material there will be a practice quiz

• In 1996 the MLS started with 10 teams.

• In 1998 there was two more teams added the the league.

• December 1993 22 cities in the United States submitted a bid for an MLS team.

• Almost two years later in 1995 only 10 cities won the bid and got a soccer team.

• The first season started in March of 1996.

• The field is 100 yards long and 60 yards wide.

• The field is divided into two halves by a center line.

Center Circle • There is a circle in

the middle of the soccer field that is 10 yards. The opposing players have to stand outside the circle during a kick-off.

• The goalie can only use his hands in this area.

• It is 44 yards wide and 18 yards deep.

• The game of soccer has a lot of rules. Most people learn the rules as they play the game as you will next week. Right now we are going to cover some of the basic soccer rules.

• There are 11 players on the field at a time for each team.

• The home team has to wear white jerseys.

• The away team must wear solid color jerseys.

• In high school soccer there is no substitution limit.

• Teams switch end at half time.

Yellow Card• A player can receive this

for:– A hard foul– Multiple fouls– Arguing with the referee– A intentional hand ball – A yellow card is a warning

to the player– Two yellow cards equal a

red card.

Red Card• A player can receive this for:

– A very hard foul– Fouling a player on a

breakaway– Fighting – After receiving two yellow

cards– Red card kicks a player out of

the game and the player is suspended for the next game.

• A free-kick takes place after a foul has taken place. Opposing player must stand ten yards away from the ball.

• If the foul is committed inside the penalty box, a team is rewarded a penalty kick.

• When a team kicks the ball behind their own goal, the other team is rewarded a corner kick.

• A player must kick the ball into play from the corner area.

• The ball has to be placed on the ground in front of the goal.
