A Local Legend…When August Bilstein set out to help local business owners in Altenvoerde, Germany back in 1873, he had no idea he would one day create one of the most recognized pieces of automotive hardware in the world.

A few facts about Bilstein’s Early Years:

• Bilstein originally helped create metal window fittings – sold under the catchy name of AUBI, an abbreviation of August Bilstein.

• It was Bilstein’s son that partnered with Berlin company Hebezeug-Fabrik, makers of automotive lifts and brought the company firmly into the automotive space

• Before the company opened several motorways for racing, they began their foray into the automotive world with the creation of its first chrome bumpers for mass-production in 1928.

Became A Household Name.• In 1929, the company began producing car jacks and introduced the innovative

side jack. • The company opened its first motorway between Cologne and Bonn in 1932. • It wasn’t until 1954, after extensive testing, that the company set out to tackle

the issue of telescopic shock absorbers.• By making dampers lighter and more versitile, Bilstein suspensions eliminated

many of the physical disadvantages of traditional shocks by creating the first mono-tube, gas-pressure Shock Absorber.

• This product came to Mercedes Benz just 3 years later, beginning Bilstein’s long relationship with the world’s best auto brands.
