History of our school

Grammar school in Mikulov was set up in 1631 by then estate owner Cardinal

František Ditrichstein. He invited the Piarist school order to the town. Mikulov school became the first college of its kind in Middle Europe.

In 1873 the Piarist school was converted into German grammar school as the majority of Mikulov inhabitants were german speaking. The

list of renowned personalities who achieved their secondary education in Mikulov includes names like Karl Renner, the later

Austrian president and a lot of other excellent people.

Private Czech grammar school was established in 1936. It was closed 2 years later when German army occupied border area and Czech

people were made to leave.

German grammar school, called Oberschule, did not last long either – only till 1945. After the arrival of Czech population, Czech state-run

grammar school came to existence.

20th century

Historical teaching aids and part of old Piarist library are exhibited in Mikulov Regional Museum; unfortunately many historical objects

were destroyed at the end of Word War II and during school reforms in the second half of the 20th century.

The old grammar school was reconstructed in years 1969 - 1995 , new laboratories and classes are used for science and languge lessons.

Foreign teachers and students were here in the 90ies of 20th century.Partnership exchanges and cooporation developed especially with

Danish partners.The graduates of the old German grammar school visited Mikulov as

well.

There were lots of excellent teachers and pupils at Mikulov Piarist

Grammar School - for example Josef von Sonnenfels who helped to

abolish torture in Austrian Monarchy,

and Jan Evangelista Purkyně- the most noteble Czech natural

scientist.

These days

Our school participates in Comenius project.

In 2005 students of 7.0 visited Finland as a part of work on Comenius language programme. The following year Finnish students came to the Czech Republic and

visited our school.

A year later another class entered into a partnership programme called Ecofootprint.Some students went to Denmark and Hungary and the rest of the

participating students will go to Italy and Poland.

The school offers extracurricular activities like : games - volleyball,football and florball;

creative singing in school choir.The students participate in sports and games, achieve success in championships and also in knowledge competitions in geography,history,maths,physics,chemistry

and languages.

The school went under another reconstruction in 2006 and facilities are gradually being renovated.
