INTROUDUCTION

Is a British luxury car manufacturer, headquartered in Coventry, England. It has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Indian company Tata Motors Ltd. since March 2008 and is operated as part of the Jaguar Land Rover business.

Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company by Sir William Lyons in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before switching to passenger cars. The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II due to the unfavorable connotations of the SS initials .Following several changes of ownership since the 1960s, Jaguar was listed on the London Stock Exchange and became a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index until it was acquired by Ford in 1989. Jaguar also holds Royal Warrants from HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Charles.

Jaguar cars today are designed in Jaguar Land Rover's engineering centers at the Whitley plant in Coventry and at Gaydon in Warwickshire, and are manufactured in two of Jaguar Land Rover's plants; Castle Bromwich assembly plant in Birmingham and Hale wood Body & Assembly near Liverpool.

HISTORY

On September 4, 1922, in Blackpoll, England, two young motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley, set up the Swallow Sidecar Company to produce sidecars for motorcycles. The company continued to make sidecars until the advent of World War II. In 1926 the company built the small Austin Seven, a "people's car" of rather Spartan design. At this point the company changed its name to the Swallow Sidecar and Coach building Co. and moved to a larger manufacturing space. There it made custom bodies for such cars as Morris, Fiat, Wellesley, Swift, and Standard.

IN1926

The company begins automobile body manufacturing, making attractive and luxurious coachword for popular makes including the Austin Seven, Morris, Standard, Fiat, Swift, and Cowley.IN 1927

Lyons decided to build a more stylish body for the Austin chassis and the Austin-7 was introduced.

JAGUAR THE FIRST JAGUAR

In 1934, Harry Weslake, regarded as one of the industry's top engine experts,    joined the company. His new cylinder head with OHV valve arrangement was quite reliable. The name Jaguar was used for the first time in 1935.  Also in 1935, William Heynes joined the company as chief engineer.

IN WORLD WAR II

During WWII, production shifted to the war effort, of course. After the war, the company's name was changed to Jaguar Cars Ltd.  And production resumed.  The first Jaguars were produced with the option of left-side driving controls!

FIRM PRODUCTION

The firm's production included limousines, convertibles, and sports cars fitted with 1.5-litre, 2.5-litre, and 3.5-litre engines. The most notable vehicle of the period was the 3.5-litre SS 100 model. This was the fastest and most famous pre-war Jaguar, with speeds of 100 mph and acceleration from rest to 60 mph in about 10.5 seconds. The engine had a compression ratio of 17.5:1. Racing successes in the Marne Grand Prix of Reims, the Villa Real International event, the Alpine Rally, The Monte Carlo Rally, and the RAC Rally made this one of the most famous Jaguar cars.

Fuel Efficient Vehicles

While striving to offer vehicles that our customers want to buy, we continue to develop more fuel-efficient vehicles by improving our engines, reducing vehicle weight and improving aerodynamic efficiency.During 2003, we introduced a diesel-engined Jaguar for the first time: the X-TYPE 2.0 Diesel. This offers considerably improved fuel economy and lower carbon dioxide emissions compared with the equivalent petrol-engined model, while at the same time remaining true to Jaguar values and meeting our demanding standards of performance.

MERGING PEIRODJaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation (BMC), the Austin-Morris combine, to form British Motor Holdings (BMH) in 1966. After merging with Leyland, which had already taken over Rover and Standard Triumph, the resultant company then became the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC) in 1968. Financial difficulties and the publication of the Ryder Report led to effective nationalization in 1975 and the company became British Leyland, Ltd.

Ford Motor Company ownership (1989-2008)

The Ford Motor Company made offers to the US and UK Jaguar shareholders to buy their shares in November 1989; Jaguar's listing on the London Stock Exchange was removed on 28 February 1990. In 1999 it became part of Ford's new Premier Automotive Group along with Aston Martin, Volvo Cars and, from 2000, Land Rover. Aston Martin was subsequently sold off in 2007. Between Fords purchasing Jaguar in 1989 and selling it in 2008 it did not earn any profit for the Dearborn-based auto manufacturer.

Tata Motors ownership (2008-present)

On 1 January 2008, Ford made a formal announcement which declared Tata as the preferred bidder Tata Motors also received endorsements from the Transport And General Worker's Union (TGWU)-Amicus[20] combine as well as from Ford According to the rules of the auction process, this announcement would not automatically disqualify any other potential suitor. However, Ford (as well as representatives of Unite) would now be able to enter into more focused and detailed discussions with Tata to iron out issues ranging from labor concerns (job security and pensions), technology (IT systems and engine production) and intellectual property, as well as the final sale price. Ford would also open its books for a more comprehensive due diligence by Tata. On 18 March 2008, Reuters reported that American bankers Citigroup and JP Morgan shall be underwriting a loan of USD 3 billion in order to finance the deal.

26 MARCH 2008

On 26 March 2008, Ford announced that it had agreed to sell its Jaguar and Land Rover operations to Tata Motors of India, and that the sale was expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2008. Included in the deal were the rights to three other British brands, Jaguar's own Daimler, as well as two dormant brands Lanchester and Rover. On 2 June 2008, the sale to Tata was completed at a cost of £1.7 billion.

CURRENT POSITION

The pride of the British automotive industry now takes a passage to India. Tata Motors acquired the Jaguar and Land Rover brands in 2008 for about $2.3 billion. (Ford Motor acquired Jaguar Cars in 1989 for $2.5 billion.) Jaguar now offers a line of luxury coupes, convertibles, and sedans, including the XF (a replacement for the S-Type), XJ, XK, XKR-S, and the entry-level X-Type. Ford tried to overhaul Jaguar's money-losing operations by cutting production and consolidating manufacturing to a single UK site. The reorganization also cut jobs, retooled Jaguar's retail and marketing operations, and withdrew Jaguar from Formula One racing

FUTURE PLANNINGJaguar Cars Limited and B&W Group Ltd Announces Close Collaboration Creates Audio Excellence in Jaguar XJ03/31/2010

An exclusive partnership between Jaguar Cars Limited and B&W Group Ltd. for the 2011 Jaguar XJ, has achieved what is believed to be "the best sound system in-car". Bowers & Wilkins' close collaboration with Jaguar's design and engineering teams ensured optimal placement of speakers right at the start of the design process, and together with the use of advanced components and technologies such as the first applications of Audyssey MultEQ and Dolby Pro Logic IIx, together with DTS Neo:6, allowed the companies to significantly progress in-car audio performance. Ensuring a remarkable premium audio experience for a variety of media in the Jaguar XJ, Bowers & Wilkins pushed hard to extract the best possible results from the 1200W system for all. The XJ is the first Jaguar to offer discrete 5.1-surround sound decoding in the form of Dolby Digital and DTS audio from DVD or USB source. This provides true multichannel surround, delivering the content as the artist intended and further adding to the challenge of faithfully reproducing sound in the car. With an increased number of media formats, a variety of passenger conditions, and various listening modes available the task was to apply extensive audio experience to provide a 'true sound' experience at all times. Acoustic engineers have adeptly perfected an engaging sound experience whether the source of entertainment is music or a movie.

Sales of Jaguar cars leapt by 68 percent in 2009 compared to the previous year and the British firm sold 165,000 throughout the year. Jaguar: Manufacturing

Currently, Jaguar has 2 plants, Browns Lane and Castle Bromwich. They both are only miles away from each other, which allow to split body and assembly. With the introduction of the S-type, its production is focused within one plant.

The X 400 will broaden the manufacturing basis of Jaguar by adding Halewood, the old Ford Escord plant to the portfolio. Jaguar will then produce in 3 sites and the volume will grow to about 200,000 units a year.

JAGUAR ROLE IN MOTOR SPORT

The company has had major success in sports car racing, particularly in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Victories came in 1951 and 1953 with the C-Type, then in 1955, 1956 and 1957 with the D-Type. The manager of the racing team during this period, Lofty England, later went on to become CEO of Jaguar in the early 1970s. Although the prototype XJ13 was built in the mid-1960s it was never raced, and the famous race was then left for many years, until in the mid-1980s when Tom Walkinshaw's TWR team started designing and preparing Jaguar V12-engined sports prototypes for European sports car races. The team started winning regularly from 1987, and with increased factory backing the team won Le Mans in 1988 and 1990.

In the 1999, Ford decided that Jaguar would be the corporation's Formula One entry. Ford bought out the Stewart Grand Prix team and rebranded it as Jaguar Racing for the 2000 season. The Jaguar F1 program was not a success however, achieving only two podium finishes in five seasons of competition between 2000 and 2004. At the end of 2004, with costs mounting and Ford's profits dwindling, the F1 team was seen as an unneeded expense and was sold to Red Bull energy drinks owner Dietrich Mateschitz, and it became Red Bull Racing. Since 2004 Jaguar has not had an official presence in motorsport.

The jaguar has added yet another award to its long list of accolades Best Executives Car at Fleet News Award.

CONCULSION

Jaguar continues to build X-type cars, both sedans and coupes, with a sporting heritage. The latest lineup includes the XJ, XK, and XF, all of which seem to share something with owner Ford and stablemate Volvo. Not for long, though--in 2008, Jaguar was sold once again, thanks to the auto industry's fall from great heights. In a neat twist on history, Jaguar (along with Land Rover) is owned by Tata Motors, based in the former British colony of India.
