The first films.

• The first film was ‘The lumiere brothers’. It was made between 1895-1897. However it was also said that there was another film called ‘Race horse’ that was made before in 1978.

• first films were all silent and were shown in black and white.• Actors made exaggerated movements or had to mime.• Title cards were later introduced. • ‘The little match girl’ was made in 1902 and is a good example of

classic, silent films.

Sound.

• The first sound film was shown in 1927. This film was ‘The jazz singer’.

• In big cities a orchestra would play some music in the background while the audience watch the film.

• Before ‘The jazz singer’ was made the USA has made some experiments with sound.

The first cartoon.

• The first cartoon was made in 1928 and was called ‘Mickey Mouse’.

• Mickey mouse was a Walt Disney film and was the most famous Walt Disney cartoon made so far.

• This cartoon was in black and white and then later appeared in colour.

Colour.

• The first coloured film was made in 1902.• This film was discovered in Bradford.

• Colour films were most popular in 1922-1952.• Making films in colour was very expensive.• An example of a popular coloured film made in 1930 is

‘The wizard of Oz’.

The first horror film.

(1800’s)

• During 1896 the first horror film was made.• This film was called ‘the devils castle’ and was made by

George Melies. • It was the world’s first ‘true’ horror film was made.• The film only lasted three minutes long, silent and it was

black&white.

(1900’s)

• Vampires came into the film industry in 1922.• Universal studios created gothic horror films in the

1930’s.• ‘Dracula’ was the first horror movie with sound.• The character Frankenstein in 1931 was one of the

greatest make-up monsters.• Warner brothers in 1930’s did gangster and waxwork

horrors.

• In the 1932 Tod Browning made the film ‘The Freaks’ Which was the first horror film that involved circus characters/people.

• The first sadistic film was made in late 1930’s.• In mid 1950’s horror films came to Britain.• In 1957 the film ‘The curse of Frankenstein’ was the first

film in colour. This film included shocking gore and bloody scenes.

Development of horror films.

• Horror films developed over time through events that took place. For example: the Vietnam war was a bloody war which then made horror scenes involve more and more blood.

• Another example is 9/11. This influenced horror films and made them change because it became all about the unknown. The film ‘paranormal activity’ was a recording of a horror character that you did not see.
