Washington School

The original Washington School was built in 1891 and served students in grade school. It was made of brick and topped by a bell tower and spire. Washington was originally identical to the original Columbia School but subsequent remodels changed their similarity. It was remodeled in 1900 and 1908, with the biggest remodel/addition in 1926. The school was closed in 1958 and demolished immediately. Washington Square is presently on that site.

The first building was built in 1890, followed by a second building in 1891. Both have been modified over time. In 1982, a new Geneva was built on a new site on the north side of Cable Street on Geneva Street. In 1992, an addition was built, resulting in the current Geneva. The old Geneva site was sold to Waldorf Association and is currently being used as the Waldorf school.

The Larrabee Grammar School was built in late 1890 and was on the block bounded by 20th and 21st and Larrabee and Donovan Avenues. The school, built at a cost of $40,000, was torn down about 1919. In 1920, the current Larrabee was built on a new site on 18th street. The school was named for the street on which it was located as well as for C.X. Larrabee, an early land developer in the area.

Roeder was built in 1908 and opened in 1909 on property donated by Captain Henry Roeder. It operated as a grade school until 1927 at which time it became a junior high. Eventually it served as an elementary school and later housed both elementary students and administration offices. It now serves solely as District administration offices. Prior to the construction of Roeder, the site was the home of Central School and the first Whatcom High School.

ESD 112 Initial Thoughts …. (continued)

• # 5 – Schools with overall higher scores may havebuilding components (roof, plumbing, electrical, etc.)with individual low scores. Plan for improvementprojects to address those individual low scores in thosecases. This would address problems of physicalcondition.

• # 6 – Due to inadequate functionality, physicalcondition and site size, relocate or build a new OptionsHigh School and increase its capacity to approximately250. This would address problems of capacity, physicalcondition, and functional adequacy. (Multiple options)

ESD 112 Initial Thoughts …. (continued)

• # 3 – Expand the two-section schools into three-sectionschools where site sizes and core spaces will supportadditional students. (In some cases, undersized corespaces may also be expanded.) This would addressproblems of capacity and functional adequacy.

• # 4 - Due to inadequate functionality, physical conditionand site size, re-purpose or close the Larrabee Schooland send its students to adjacent schools. This wouldplace Larrabee students in functionally adequatebuildings with adequate capacity that would be in goodphysical condition.

ESD 112 Initial Thoughts(Not Prioritized)

• # 1 – Initiate a major renovation/replacement withadditions to Sehome High School and provide speciallearning program space expansion (e.g. specialeducation, CTE, etc.) This would address problems ofcapacity, physical condition, and functional adequacy.

• # 2 – Renovate/replace elementary school facilities, beginning with those having the lowest compositescores. (i.e. Sunnyland, Lowell, Happy Valley, Parkview, etc.) This would address problems of functionaladequacy and physical condition (enhance accessibility, energy efficiency, etc.)
