A court ballet, one of the most famous examples of a ballet de cour, staged at the Salle du
Petit-Bourbon in the Louvre, Paris, on 23 Feb. 1653. The ballet lasted twelve hours, beginning at
sunset and ending with sunrise, and featured figures from mythology in various nocturnal episodes.
One of the performers was Louis XIV, who was 14 at the time. He appeared as the Sun, a role which
led to his being known as the Sun King
