• The people, known as Pilgrims, had a difficult year. They did not know how to cultivate the land and many people became sick and died.

• An Indian, named Squanto, helped the pilgrims to learn to fish and to plant seeds for crops.

• He also helped them form a friendship with a group of local Indians, called the Wampanoag.
