History MAJORING IN HISTORY The History program at Davis & Elkins fosters an atmosphere of critical thinking and enthusiasm. This includes writing and research which enables students to develop skills which help in professions such as teaching, public service and business as well as the historical field including archival and preservationist occupations. Why Davis & Elkins College? D&E is a private liberal arts institution located in the mountain highlands of West Virginia. We offer small classes (with a student-faculty ratio of 16:1) taught by extraordinary faculty dedicated to your academic success. Our History faculty aims to engender a love of analysis and research. Moreover it develops important writing skills which are useful in many occupations. e curriculum is particularly useful for those interested in the global perspective. For instance we offer courses in Vietnam, American Diplomatic History and Contemporary Europe. The program goals are: 1. to contribute to preparing people for effective leadership and useful citizenship, 2. to attempt to provide students with insight into the historian’s spirit of critical analysis as a means of discovering truth, 3. to encourage students to think independently, clearly, and with a minimum of bias, 4. to foster an understanding and a love of liberty, 5. to help students grasp the concept that with freedom comes great responsibility, 6. to provide students with a background and a frame of reference into which they may fit knowledge gained in other fields, 7. to emphasize the ecumenical nature of the discipline as providing a vehicle for learning to deal with the complexity of modern society, 8. to acquaint students with some of the writings of historians, and 9. to prepare students for the vocation or profession of their choice, such as law, teaching, journalism, publishing, politics, public service, library or archival service, diplomacy, the ministry, advertising and as professional historians. Active Learning History majors participate in internships dealing with diverse interest such as Railroad Tourism and work at the Elkins Inter-Mountain, our students have gone to London, Barcelona and Ireland. is gives them unique experiences that give an acute exposure to the global community. Internships not only equip students for a position in their area of interest, they also test and confirm genuine interests in particular fields, and contribute to strong resumés when students seek employment.
