• Printing was first invented in the 6th and 7th centuries when blocks were cut to print textiles on and reproduce Buddhist texts.

When Fust (Gutenberg’s partner) took the Bibles to France to sell, he was suspected of witchcraft because of the number and uniformity of the volumes and had to reveal the method of production.

• 1849: Henry Cole informed people the importance of graphic Design in Great Britain in his “Journal of Design and Manufactures”

• 1891-1896: William Morris published “Arts and Crafts Movement” and created the first books of stylistic nature

• Morris showed that there was a market for graphic design

• His work along with the rest of the Private Press movement directly influenced the development of graphic design in the twentieth century.

Twentieth Century• Graphic Designed started

to be used for utilitarian purposes like buildings, theatre sets, posters, fabrics, clothing, furniture, and logos.

• 1928: The book “New Typography” by Jan Tschichold showed readers new types of typography

• World War two created a boom for graphic design for advertising and packaging

• Since these first signs graphic design has continued to grow into an incredibly large money –making industry,GCT (PGA) LHR.
