STRIVING FOR CERTIFICATION

INDIVIDUALS WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION TAKING LEAD AND VOLUNTEERING TIME TO FORM STUDY GROUPS. A. O’Brien (Providence Health) & K. Nikl (Fraser

Health) started study groups in their own health region.

Others followed with the resources collectively produced.

Individuals within the organization who had taken the certification and believed in its importance continued to influence many of their colleagues to become certified.

FALL 2008

No Organized study group for this session based on changing of staff and workload issues.

Fellow colleagues attended CANNT in Quebec City. R. Luscombe presented an influential presentation about

preparing for the CNeph ( C ) exam. Several individuals approached me (T. Parent) after R.

Luscombe presentation and stated with smiles “So, when are you going to organize the study sessions for 2009 exam.”

“IT STARTED THAT DAY WITH A SIMPLY REALIZATION FROM COLLEGUES OF THEIR OWN LEARNING NEEDS AND HOW A GROUP MIGHT BEST SUPPORT THE PROCESS OF STUDYING.”

In the first sessions we had 12 individuals taking the exam provincially.

We were not registered as a group, so members joined by word of mouth.

REASON FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A RESOURCE CD

Every session some individuals would bring their binder along.

It was painful to watch some of our colleagues carry around a huge binder with an ANNA book in hand.

It was obvious we need to utilize technology and allow resources to be shared, portable, and inexpensive.

CD PRODUCTION

As the session was in progress Files were photocopied emailed in PDF form Organized in various folders Documents renamed

CD not available till halfway through the study session term.

One of our colleagues to help support the group started up her own website with details on the competences with all the study notes for the group.

THE BEGINNING

“It started with individuals who had an interest to be certified and identified individual personal learning needs both independently and in a group setting. It ended with a group of nurses becoming nationally certified in nephrology and continuing to influence those around them to take the same course of action.”
