ALTERED/MOVED NOTES: Original site. Any milk cow stanchions and some horse stalls have been

removed. There was a granary along the East wall has been converted into two pens. North and South

lean-tos may were added later. The owner says that there were 8’ sliding doors on the East and West

sides of the center barn. That area was the horse barn and could have had 6 double horse stalls. Lean-to on the North side was added later and has rough sawn cottonwood rafters. The South lean-to was added later yet and has milled rafters. It appears to have had a post and beam in the center of the original barn, which has been removed and maybe that was when the two rows of 6x6 post and beams were installed.

INTERIOR NOTES: Two 2x4 rough sawn studs 24” O.C. walls 11’ high on each side of the 28’ center

section of the original barn, 2x4 rough sawn studs 12” O. C. on the East and West exterior walls and the North exterior walls are 2x4 rough sawn 5’ O. C. with a purlin centered. The South wall has milled studs 4’ O. C. with a purloined centered and milled rafters. The exterior is covered with 1x12 vertical siding and battens. The center hayloft is supported with 6x6 posts 9’ O. C. and two rows of 6x6 beams. All walls are set on a 4x6 sill. 2” x full 8-1/4” rough sawn cottonwood floor joists support the hayloft floor.

OTHER NOTES: Windows are 8”x10” four light. With one 4”x24” four light on the west wall and one 9” x

12” four light window installed horizontally in the west hayloft gable wall. All the walk doors are 3’ wide.

The North and South walls of the center part of the barn have sheathing up to 8’ high and are open for the

top 3’ to allow hay to be fed down to the livestock in the lean-tos.

HISTORY

The following information is from the Abstract on this farm.

Recorded by Kathleen Gorsett

June 5, 1871—Patent from United States to Collins Anthony, signed by U. S. Grant, president.

In 1882 this farm is listed to Collins Anthony as the homesteader.

Property changed hands several times.

January 11, 1884 –- To Daniel Stafford

In 1877 this farm located in the NE¼ and SE1/4 of Section 2, Volin Township, Yankton County, Daniel

J. Strafford made the final payment for his patent on this farm.

October 8, 1901—To Martin Dahl

February 28, 1903 – Warranty from Martin Dahl to Ole A. Gorsett and wife Petra (grandparents of

Kathleen Gorsett) for consideration of $10,800. The barn was already built by that time.

July 24, 1920 Ole Gorsett died and property passed to his wife Petra and their seven children. The

interests of the seven children were subsequently conveyed to Petra.

March 24, 1926 – Petra Gorsett mortgaged the property to Union Central Life Insurance Company of

Cincinnati for $10,000.

November 30, 1930 – Petra Gorsett died, and the property and mortgage passed to her children as heirs.

Eventually they defaulted on the loan.

April 13, 1939 – Foreclosure sale was held. For a bid of $7,949.11 (the sum of the principle and interest

owed plus taxes due and other fees) the Union Central Life Insurance Company purchased the property.

Records indicate “there was no other bid”.

October 1, 1940 – Abstract company reports no judgments, liens or taxes due on the property, and

purchase of the property began by Thora C. Gorsett and Leonard Gorsett (parents of Kathleen Gorsett)

with $9,500 mortgage held by Union Central Life Insurance Company.

March 7, 1949 – Mortgage was discharged.

February 13, 1984 – Warranty deed for property from Leonard A. Gorsett and Thora C. Gorsett to their

children, Russell L. Gorsett, Darlene J. South, JoAnn E. Fridgen, and Kathleen K. Gorsett. Kathleen

Gorsett moved into the home at that time and has lived there since.

June 27, 1985 –Warranty deed from Russell L. Gorsett to JoAnn E. Fridgen and Kathleen K. Gorsett for

his one-fourth interest in the property.

January 25, 2002 – Warranty deed from JoAnn E. Fridgen and Darlene J. South for their full interest in

the property to Kathleen K. Gorsett, with mortgage held by Farm Credit Services of America.

November 18, 2014 Kathleen Gorsett made her final mortgage payment on that mortgage and remains

the current owner.
