Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood
In 1911, C. Perry Snell and J.C. Hamlett purchased 600 acres of farmland and wilderness north of a booming
downtown and developed the rst neighborhood in the City of St. Petersburg.
Characterized by a diversity of architectural styles, including Mediterranean, Colonial, Craftsman, Prairie, Mis-
sion and Tudor; the neighborhood grew until it reached from Tampa Bay to the Fourth Street Business District.
Mature oak trees, waterfront parks, brick streets, hex block sidewalks and front porches lend an atmosphere of
tranquility to the neighborhood.
Souvenir of St. Petersburg, Views from the Vinoy
The recently published Souvenir of St. Petersburg, Views from the Vinoy is an 80-page, full color book about
the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood featuring a highly visual and interactive approach to history, archi-
tecture, preservation, culture and community development. Tourists, residents, and younger visitors alike will
be charmed by its vintage postcards and photographs, as well as the engaging narrative.
Sunken Gardens
In 1903, George Turner, Sr., a plumber by trade, began growing tropical plants in the rich, fertile soil of anancient lake. What began as a passion for gardening, soon blossomed into a world famous botanical display
garden. Strolling through this four-acre sanctuary, youll enjoy a variety of lush tropical plantings; cascading
waterfalls; owing ponds; exotic birds and rare Chilean amingos.
Rooted in history, Sunken Gardens is one of the oldest roadside attractions in the United States.
Renaissance Vinoy Resort
On New Years Eve 1925, Aymer Vinoy Laughners dream of an incomparable luxury hotel opened. The result
was one of nest examples of Mediterranean Revival architecture in Florida, incorporating exquisite details,
such as glazed quarry tiles and pecky-cypress beams in the lobby; frescoed ceilings and walls in the dining
room; intricate ornamental plaster work on the observation tower, entrances and grand dining room window.
For 85 years, it has stood at the gateway to the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood as a monument of
grace, elegance, unsurpassed service and every modern amenity.
