John’s Gospel tells us that when Jesus “breathed” on the disciples, the Holy Spirit came into them, empowering them to forgive sins and to gather all people into union with one another. The book of Genesis had explained the divisions among nations with the story of the Tower of Babel. In rebellious pride, human beings had struggled to become equal to God. The result was chaos, strife, the inability even to speak the same language among themselves. Today’s reading from Acts tells how the Spirit has just the opposite effect. Strangers from many nations hear and understand one another, each in his or her own tongue. This message of unity in the Spirit is repeated in the reading from Corinthians. There are many gifts, many ways to serve. One way is not “higher,” nor one person “better” than another. There is but one Spirit, who accomplishes all the different works we do, acting through us.

When we hear “Come, Holy Spirit” we think of today’s story from Acts.

But the truth is that today’s scene is but one moment from the Spirit’s long presence in salvation.

The spirit of God (ruach) is present at the dawn of creation, blowing over the chaotic waters as God commands light to be.

That same spirit of God filled the prophets of Israel.

“The spirit of the Lord came upon me” fills their witness, as they guided Israel in their quest to be faithful to the loving, merciful God of their covenant.

We hear that the Spirit overshadowed Mary’s womb so that the very Word of God would take on our human flesh.

And Jesus begins his ministry in Luke’s Gospel by saying the Spirit is upon him.

On the cross, according to John, he gives up his spirit.

Today Paul tells us that this Holy Spirit is from God, who raised Christ from the dead.

We also hear John’s account of the Spirit as the very breath of the risen Christ on his disciples.

That same Spirit of all these biblical accounts was there at our baptism and continues to live in us.

We are temples of that Spirit, witnesses to the Spirit’s grace.

And it is in the Holy Spirit that we will continue to live in the gospel’s light, and to pursue our life of eternal glory in Christ.

Para Ser Feliz en el Trabajo Haz una lista de cinco formas cotidianas de dar las gracias y felicitar a los demás en el trabajo. Ponla en un sitio donde la veas a diario. Cada vez que practiques una de ellas, goza de lo que en tu interior se genera.

1) Piensa en alguien de tu trabajo que merezca el reconocimiento que últimamente no haya recibido. Busca alguna forma inesperada y extraordinaria de darle las gracias y felicitarla.

2) Trata a tus colegas como c o m p a ñ e r o s n o c o m o competidores que amenazan tu puesto.

3) Evalúa con frecuencia todo lo que has hecho: felicítate por los logros que vas alcanzando; si hay asuntos que te generan preocupación, elabora un plan para solventarlos.

4) Una vez al año revisa si te sientes debidamente remunerado. Si no, no temas pedir un aumento de sueldo.

5) Considera a tu empresa no como el lugar para subsistir, sino como el entorno en el que puedes desarrollar todas tus facultades.

Sabiduría: El gusto de Dios y de las cosas de Dios. Es saborear a Dios. Es saber ver con los ojos del corazón.

Entendimiento: Luz para entender el misterio de Dios, el misterio de Cristo, el misterio del hombre, el misterio de la historia. El misterio de la vida. Luz para entender las palabras y los signos de Dios.

Consejo: Prudencia a la hora de hablar y de escuchar, capacidad para tomar y ayudar a tomar decisiones acertadas: orientar en el buen camino, corregir, alentar.

Fortaleza: Para superar miedos y comodidades, para afrontar riesgos y dificultades.

Ciencia: Para conocer a Dios desde las cosas, para descubrir su huella en la creación; también en la creación renovada por la inteligencia y la mano del hombre.

Piedad: Para intensificar la relación filial con Dios. Está hecha de agradecimiento, cariño, ternura, benevolencia y disponibilidad. Algo muy delicado y muy valioso. Y nos ayuda a ver con buenos ojos a todos los hijos de Dios.

Temor de Dios: Transido de humildad y respeto: no teme a Dios, sino que lo admira y adora; se teme a sí mismo, por su fragilidad, y confía en Dios. Un Dios que siempre es más. No soy digno, pero confío en tu amor.
