ROSE CITY AIR FEST 2021

This July, the Rose City Air Fest was held at the Tyler Pounds Airport. This was the first air show at Tyler Pounds in over 10 years. Thru the hard work by a large group of volunteers headed by Lyn Thomas of Cedar Creek Veterans Foundation and Tyler’s Camp V along with Lou Thomas and Chip Williams of HAMM. It was organized and made available to the residents of East Texas. This event was almost a year in planning with many, many people assisting. We were fortunate to have the City of Tyler and the Tyler Pounds Airport manager Steve Thompson and Airport Operations Supervisor Max Tovar providing airport support for this event. Preparations for the Air Fest began in June for HAMM volun-teers as they began cleaning the restoration hangar, the museum area as well as all of the outdoor areas. Items in the restoration hangar had to be rearranged and even moved outdoors to accom-modate incoming air show aircraft including the two F-16 Demo Team aircraft. The entire ramp area out in front of the tower in-cluding the HAMM display area was going to be used for air-craft display.

This required all of HAMM’s static display aircraft to be moved over and lined up on taxiway Alpha. A positive side of this move was that it allowed for air show attendees to be up and close to our display aircraft. Also HAMM volunteers removed all weeds and FOD from the ramp area as well as sprucing up the green area close to the ramp side of the terminal. Air show aircraft began to show up on Thursday before the air show on Friday, July 2nd. HAMM members and visitors on Thursday were fortunate to see a number of the air show per-formers practice their air show routines. This included the F-16, Randy Ball’s MIG 17 and P-51 Swamp Fox to name a few. The C-17 Globemaster that flew in from McCord AFB in Washington flew its routine upon arrival to Tyler Pounds before it landed. Also a number of the aircraft from the Commemorative Air Force of their Magnificent Seven arrived including their B-17. On Friday, July 2nd, the day of the Air Fest, the ramp was open so visitors could see all the air-craft up close. The F-16 Falcons as well as the C-17 Globemaster were on display. The C-17 was opened up in the afternoon so visitors could tour thru the aircraft. It was also open on Sat-urday and Sunday for tours. The C-17 is the largest aircraft to land at Tyler Pounds now that our main runway 4-22 has been lengthened to 8,334 feet. The estimated landing weight was over 300,000 lbs. Quite eye opening. It’s departure was even more eye opening with a weight over 400,000 lbs. performing a short field takeoff upon departure.

ROSE CITY AIR FEST 2021 Continued

The weather was iffy on Friday morning with a rain shower at noon questioning the weather for the air show. Fortunately in the afternoon most clouds had dissipated. Air Fest visitors be-gan arriving after lunch to see the display aircraft including Commemorative Air Force Mag-nificent 7, the C-17 with onboard tours, the pair of F-16 Falcons, numerous performing air-craft as well as the HAMM aircraft. Attendees also enjoyed the food trucks and the live per-formance by Kristyn Harris which was presented by Cavender’s, before the air show began at 6:30 PM.

The weather held off and all attendees were able to enjoy 2 plus hours of amazing pilot and aircraft performance. It was later noted that there were at least 5 times more people watching from outside the airport that were in the air show grounds. The clouds late in the day gave everyone the opportunity to get some really great photos.

War Bird Expo At HAMM

On Saturday and Sunday following the air show, the Commemorative Air Force’s Magnificent 7 planes were open for tours as well as rides. The B-17, B-24, Boeing Stearman, T6 Texan en-joyed full ridership. The rides and display aircraft were visited by the public both days as well as touring the HAMM museum and enjoying the HAMM aircraft on display at Taxiway Alpha. HAMM volunteers worked many hours these days often putting in 10 or more hours per day the 7 days prior to the Air Fest and Ward Bird Expo and days after. Many thanks to all our of our tireless volunteers for their service.

VOLUNTEERING—INTERESTING FACTS

Submitted by Gail Strong, HAMM Librarian I recently read an article that stated 1.3 million non-profits exist in the United States today and while one survey found that 12.3 million Americans are employed full-time by non-profits, ap-proximately another 77 million donate their time. Time is not tax deductible, but your transportation is. One hour of volunteering is estimated to be worth $27.20. While you can’t be compensated monetarily for your time, your mileage to and from volunteering sites as well as mileage per-formed for the non-profit is 14 cents per mile in 2021. It pays to be Unpaid The Historic Aviation Memorial Museum is a non-profit organization. HAMM exists on volun-teer help and donations as we do not receive either State or Federal Funding. Being a volunteer for HAMM is a gratifying and self-rewarding experience. New friendships are made, education is shared and expanded, challenges are met and exceeded. Hamm is al-ways in need of volunteers in the following areas: Docent, Gift Shop and Aircraft Restoration. Come join our HAMM volunteers. You will be glad you did!

HAMM Board Members Election

The Museum will hold nominations and elections for three (3) Board Members in October for the year 2022. Each board members serves a term of 2 years. Applications will be mailed out for those of you who like to consider being on the Board Of Directors to help guide HAMM into the future.

BRICK BY BRICK With the Holiday Season approaching, this might be a good time to go ahead and purchase that memorial brick dedicated to a loved one. We would be proud to place it in our Memorial Garden along with so many others who have been honored by their families. If this is some-thing that you have been putting off, please contact one of our volunteers and let them assist you in completing this tribute.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

The Museum is in dire need of some new volunteers. We especially need more volunteers as docents to escort and inform our guests about the various artifacts and aircraft on display. The restoration hangar is always looking for volunteers to help refurbish and ready our aircraft for display at the museum. The gift shop is in need of help greeting our guests and collecting the entry fees. There are also several other areas within the organization where volunteers can help the existing staff in their duties. Please stop by or call the Museum (903-526-1945) to in-quire about helping our organization continue to serve the general public.
