centre but I prefer to do physicalactivity outside, so I like to do thepark run here on a Saturdaymorning.

What are your plans for youryear abroad?I’ve decided to do a workplacement, rather than a studyplacement, because I thought itwould be a good chance to try outwork opportunities and see if theyare what I would like to do in thefuture.

As I’m doing joint honours I’ll spendpart of my year in France as a tourleader and then next February I’mgoing to be working in Spain, inBilbao, for Happy Erasmus, whichlooks after exchange students. We’llbe organising events, activities andtrips and supporting them all theway through their Erasmusexperience. I’m really lookingforward to it. I’m thinking aboutbecoming a tour leader when Igraduate – I love showing peoplemy own perspective of anothercountry and culture, and I loveworking with young people.

Any advice for someonethinking of coming to Kent?Come to the open days, ask lots ofquestions and have a look at the cityof Canterbury itself, to see whetheryou would like it here. And then, ifyou have any questions, there’s abuddy scheme that allows you toemail a current Hispanic Studiesstudent to ask about the courseand the student life. I think thatwould be very helpful.

Sonja von Hertwig isin the second year of herjoint honours degree inHispanic Studies andFrench. This is what shetold us about life at Kent.

Why did you choose to studyHispanic Studies and French?I’ve always been very intrigued bylanguages. I’m from Germany andI learned French, English and Latinat school there; then, in Year 12,I came to school in England andstarted learning Spanish in my ownfree time and got very passionateabout it. So I decided I’d like to doFrench and Spanish for a degree.

Why did you choose Kent?I wanted to do a degree that wasn’tonly about learning languages; Iwanted to be involved with literatureor film, other aspects of learning alanguage. Kent seemed like a goodoption because the modules areso varied and you can also takeelective modules if you’re interestedin another subject area.

Can you describe what yourcourse is like? For our language module we havegrammar lessons and workshops, which are like reading lessons. For the workshops, we are givena text to read before the class, thenwe either talk about it or translate it,and have a discussion about ittogether.

We also have speaking lessonswhere we do lots of practice, which

has helped me a lot. It doesn’tmatter if you make mistakesbecause everyone makes them.

I also take part in a scheme calledthe tandem programme, whereyou exchange languages. Youlet the department know whatlanguages you speak and theymatch you up with someone whospeaks the language you arelearning. I met a girl from Panamawho wanted to learn German. Whenwe meet up we speak German for30 minutes and then Spanish for30 minutes. It’s really good.

What about the other aspectsof your course?I did a module on Spanish literaturelast term, which was veryinteresting. I thought Spanishliterature would be too difficult forme but actually I enjoy it a lot! Thisterm I’ve just started Spanishcinema and I love that too.

Are your lecturers helpful? Definitely, yes. You can email themor go to see them during their officehours. If you’re not sure you’regoing in the right direction in anessay, they will meet you todiscuss it and offer advice.

What do you think of thefacilities on campus?I like to use the study hubs in theaccommodation – in Darwin, orKeynes – rather than the librarybecause they tend to be less busy, and I find it easier to focus there.I’ve been to yoga, Zumba andspinning classes at the sports

graduate job. It was reassuring tofeel supported even after leavingthe University.

I’m currently working as anExecutive Officer in the PeopleDevelopment team within HR at the Government Legal Department.I have always wanted to work inthe Civil Service as theopportunities for growth andprofessional development aresecond to none.

My role is extremely varied and my responsibilities range fromhelping to facilitate learning anddevelopment training events, toproviding support for the legal and business apprenticeshipprogrammes, to planning large-scale events such as Learning atWork Week for over 2,000 staff. Ihave had the opportunity to developa variety of skills, from writingarticles for the communicationsteam to practising public speakingthrough to presenting at events. Forme every day is different and this iswhat I enjoy the most about my role.

To anyone thinking of coming toKent, I would say attend the openday, have a thorough look throughthe prospectus and on the websiteand take the time to research thecourse you are interested instudying. Make sure to look through the modules, the method ofassessment and start the readinglist early! Being organised is key. I would also recommend gettinginvolved with societies and jumpingat every opportunity that you can.

I was encouraged to study at Kentby my A Level English teacher, whohad studied here previously andspoke highly of the outstandingquality of teaching. But it wouldn’tbe a lie if I told you that one of thereasons I decided to study at Kentwas due to falling in love with thebeautiful city of Canterbury!

I decided to study a joint honoursprogramme as I felt this offered methe chance to explore my interestsand develop a broader set of skills.I chose Spanish because I enjoyedlearning the language and exploringLatin American culture: I believelearning a language is invaluable.

I found joint honours challengingat first but quickly learnt how toorganise myself and manage mytime effectively. I often found thatthere was cross-over between mytwo subjects; for example, texts thatI studied in Comparative Literaturewould crop up in Hispanic modules.

I thoroughly enjoyed the moduleson Hispanic culture – the coursecontent was interesting and thelecturers had a passion for theirsubject. My favourite module was on the impact of state-sponsoredviolence and transactional justice inLatin America, which I found reallyinteresting. Modules are made up ofseminars, lectures and workshopsand they incorporate different mediasuch as documentaries and films as

well as texts; the variety suited mylearning style really well.

During my time at Kent, lecturersoperated an open door policy, so Ialways felt I could ask for supportand guidance when needed. Ireceived regular feedback andconstructive criticism on essays andexams and had frequent progresscheck-ups with my academicadviser.

I spent my year abroad living andstudying in the Spanish city ofToledo, where I made friends for life, got to travel and was immersed inSpanish culture. During this year not only did my Spanish speaking, listening and writing skills greatlyimprove but my confidence withinmyself. Living by yourself in adifferent country is a culture shockand you have to learn to adapt.Undertaking this year taught mehow to manage and overcomeunexpected challenges and gaveme the resilience I needed tosuccessfully complete the final year.

I would definitely recommend a yearabroad and have found that it helpsto make you stand out to employersand is an interesting talking point ininterviews.

I made use of the careers advisersat Kent and found their advice reallyuseful in the period after graduatingwhen I was searching for a
