Beatitudes

• Threes components to every beatitude• 1. Claim- “Blessed”• 2. Characteristic- “are the poor in spirit”• 3. Consequence- “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”

Purpose of each Beatitude

• 1st-3rd are essential to being converted• Humiliation- vs.3 blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of

heaven• Contrition- vs.4 blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted• Submission- vs.5 blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth

Purpose of Each Beatitude

• 4th -7th essential to growing as a Christian• Passion for being right with God- vs.6 blessed are those who hunger and thirst

for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied• Compassion for others- vs.7 blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive

mercy• Sanctification- vs.8 blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God• Cooperation- vs.9 blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons

of God

Purpose of each beatitude

• 8-9 are essential to conviction• Conviction- vs. 10-11 blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness

sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

2. Affect

• Matthew 5:13-16• Making a change in your life• We are the salt and light of the world

3. Authority

• A. Direct- Jesus saw the word of God as something to direct His life• B. Respect- Jesus had respect for the word of God• Jot=smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet • Respecting God’s word brings us one step closer to being like Jesus

• C. Protect- Jesus protected the word of God• Conflict vs.21- Walk in love when conflict arises• Lust vs.27- Lust desensitizes us, and causes heart-ache• Adultery vs. 31- Preserving marriage is important to God• Honesty in Speech vs.33- Be a man or woman of your word• Vengeance vs. 38- Don’t resist the one who is evil• Love vs.43- Binds together all things
