FROM THE BOARDWALK TO THE BOARDROOMBY SECRETARY FRED CARR
FROM THE COMMODORECOM. A.J. TELMOS, MD
Thank you to all my fellow DYC members who attended the winter rendezvous onSinger Island, West Palm Beach, Florida for making this years’ rendezvous so memo-rable. The weather was spectacular with temps ranging from 82 to 88 degrees. The golfand fishing were great, all though the group got skunked on sail fishing, Bill and DeniseSchrader, Dennis Heling and my son R.J. caught enough fish for a great fish fry on ourlast evening.
Linda and Dennis Heling hosted the Friday night party at their rented house on SingerIsland. The food was prepared by their chef friend Wally from Miami. Sixty DYC membersattended.
Kudos to DYC member Craig Lamm who brought his 86 foot Berber up fromLauderdale for a Saturday Evening Sunset Cruise. The crew and food were spectacular!Craig also raised $3,000 for this years Hydroplane races.
The final event at the Marriott was wonderful. Cocktails at the Commodores and FirstLady’s suite, dinner and dancing on the hotel veranda to an acoustic guitar and an after-glow back at the Commodore’s suite until 1 am. A great time was had by all!
The board and advisory committee for the new DYC Foundation are now being formed. If you have any interest in serving on either of these now or in the future please contact Treasurer Greg Nowak.
The DYC burgee was taken to the Mariners Church on March 14th and blessed.Fleet Captain Karyn Stano and the boating committee have put together an outstanding rendezvous agenda for the 2011
boating season. Please join your fellow DYC members for a good time.DYC members, it is with deep regret that I accepted the resignation of Karyn Stano as Fleet Captain. Karyn's leaving is a great
loss to the DYC and our DYC family. Karyn has done an outstanding job serving as Fleet Captain for the past three commodores.Karyn, you will be missed! Andy Ciupak as agreed to assume the position as Fleet Captain immediately. Knowing Andy, I am cer-tain he will serve with honor and distinction.
Details of upcoming rendezvous will be in my next article.

FROM THE VICE COMMODOREBY BRYAN BARLOW
House Committee House Committee Spring Clean-Up Day, May 7th. Mark the date on your paper calendar, lap top, iPad, iPhone or
Droid, May 7th is Clean-Up Day at DYC, otherwise known as the "Vice Commodore’s Ball". Iordered up considerably better weather this year just for this special day. I sincerely hope youcan lend a helping hand for a few hours planting flowers, mulching and general spring clean upof the grounds. Your participation truly makes a huge difference. As always, lunch and yourfavorite beverages will be served afterwards for the working volunteers.
Please note, a very special thank you goes out to all of those member volunteers, JohnVermeulen, Ed Theisen, Holly Burns, Phyllis Kerslake, Gabrielle Cockell, Paul Lee, Matt andStephanie Dillon, Bill McIntyre and Linda Barlow, that all took time out of their busy scheduleslast month to polish all of our beautiful Trophies in the Trophy Room. The room looks fantasticwith all of the shining Trophies.
Thank you to all the Voyageurs as well for their generous donation of time and funds to have our beautiful crystal Chandelier in the second floor ladies powder room professionally cleanedincluding repairing the damaged surface finish on the two tables.
Another group that deserves a special thank you and that donated countless hours these past few months is our DecoratingCommittee, Joann Leo and Mirv Hayes including their helpers. They have worked closely with Jeff Michels and his maintenancecrew on the Ladies Locker Room Flooring, the new Boatique construction project, including the Grill Restaurant paint job colorschemes and decorating. Thank you to Director Jim Gierlach as well for his company’s electrical donation to the project and to theBoard Members that donated funding, assistance, or manual labor to the projects. To my friends that graciously contributed mon-etarily to the Boatique project and that I can always count on for help and support. Thank you all.
This is what makes our Historic Detroit Yacht Club so special. It's our members that set us apart from other private clubs and public marinas. It's truly powerful. DYC members are always willing to pitch in and help, they are always giving of their time and oftheir resources. This is why we are 143 years old and still an incredible Detroit Yacht Club.
Sincerely,Bryan Barlow Vice Commodore Vice Commodore’s Ball

Now that Spring is here, it is time for ourAnnual Meeting to set fun events for the upcoming year. Themeeting is April 7th, in the Trophy room at 7:30-9pm. We wel-come all current and new members - please come to help setup our events and show your support.
Due to our outstanding staff, the MOMC has scheduled theirWalleye Tournament out of the DYC again this year. The eventis April 17th. The MOMC will also hold their captain's meetingat the DYC the evening before. If you are interested in joiningthis event let me know via e-mail. Additionally, the MOMC,DYC R&G Club, DAC and GPYC are sponsoring the MichiganSpecial Olympics Musky Derby June 21st at the Grosse PointeYacht Club. This is an all day event which helps raise moneyfor Special Olympics programs in Michigan. The DYC Rod &Gun Club has helped raise over $60,000 since we have beeninvolved. To enter this event, teams will charter a boat for fourpersons ($650.00) - splitting the cost between team membersincludes breakfast at the GPYC, all day musky charter and adinner at the GPYC. "SIMPLER THAN SAILINGCHEAPER THAN POWER BOATING"
Kayak time will soon beupon us. So it is time to reor-ganize the Kayak Club. Iwould like to start by collectinga list of DYC kayak enthusi-asts, both those who ownkayaks and those who do not. That list will be the KayakClub roster. Once I have alist, I will share it so we can
contact each other to arrange times to kayak together. If you would like to be on that list, email me at
[email protected]. Tell me your name, email addressand phone number (optional), if you have your own kayak andhow many.

Boating Season is BACK and it's time to fill the Club and harbor with the sound of boats, cheers, laughter and the thrills of theracing season....The Gold Cup Hydroplane Races that is!
As Commodore A.J. stated we have secured the presenting sponsorship for this year's APBA Detroit Gold Cup Races. We aredoing this exciting venture to ensure that this wonderful tradition of hydroplane racing continues and to place the Historic DetroitYacht Club in the forefront.
With this great opportunity we will be able to court potential members, have great publicity and opportunity to cater to severalother venues. This partnership with the DRRA is a definite Win-Win for our Club and its members.
The DYC and the DRRA will hold a special "Help Preserve A Great Detroit Tradition" fundraising dinner on May 6th; the tick-et price is $100 a person. This event is open to all surrounding private club members, and the general public, so pass the wordand bring your friends. If we can get 100 of our members to each bring five people, the event will be a smashing success! This isa perfect event to entertain clients, perspective members and anyone you know that has an interest in Detroit's River WaterfrontWonderland.
We are also in need of items to be donated for the silent auction on May 6th; please contact Dan Nowicki or myself directly withdonation items.
As we move forward with these fundraising efforts we want to assure you that we are not giving up the dream of raising spon-sorship for the Miss DYC boat. Our hope is to be able to do both! However, if at some point we are unable to raise the necessaryfunds we will focus solely on our Presenting Sponsor commitment for the 2011 APBA Gold Cup Race.
Spread the word and come on down to "Help Preserve A Great Detroit Tradition"! and A Great DYC Tradition too!Mary Rachwal2011 Miss DYC Gold Cup Hydroplane Committee Chair
