March 12, 2017 - Second Sunday of Lent | 3

D F ,

Peace and all Good! Each year on this Second of Lent, we hear the amazing story of the Transfigura on. One minute it is just their friend and teacher Jesus. The next mi-nute, the light is so bright they can hardly see, and what they saw is astounding: Moses, the great law-giver and Elijah, the great prophet! Peter, ever helpful, decides to build some huts for Jesus, Moses and Elijah, but all of a sudden there is a voice from heaven and the courage of the disciples deserts them all and they cower on the ground! This was a great moment for the apostles and for us. This epi-sode gives the apostles a preview of Jesus’ ul mate transfigura on! Like them, let us keep in mind this Lent that we are moving forward to the Paschal Mystery: the Passion Death and resurrec on of Christ! Let’s keep in mind the ul mate outcome of our Lent! Last weekend, you picked up your “Opera on Rice Bowls”. The three main prac ces of Lent are: prayer, fas ng and almsgiving. There are many op-portuni es to give to charity but I would like to in-vite all of us as a parish community to also par ci-pate in this communal act of almsgiving. Plan a sim-ple meal during the week and put the money you saved by sharing a simple meal in the rice bowl. Keep doing this during the coming weeks of Lent and then on the Fi h Sunday of Lent bring your rice bowls back for a special Offertory Procession. All the funds collected will be sent to Catholic Relief services, suppor ng people interna onally that are suffering from natural disasters, war and oppres-sion. (There are s ll some of the rice bowls availa-ble in the Rotunda.) In closing I invite you to our St. Joseph Table and Dinner next Sunday in St. Francis Hall. All proceeds from the event will go to the poor. See the back cover of today’s bulle n for details. St. Joseph, pray for us!

Love,

LENTEN SOUP AND STUDY “The Last Words of Jesus”

Thursdays of Lent: 16th, 23rd & April 6th. St. Francis Hall—6:30 p.m.

The final words of a dying person are precious to those le behind. When the me is short, one has a chance to speak only of the most important things—love, for-giveness, and faith. That is why the Church has a long tradi on of medita ng on the last words of Jesus from the cross. Join us!

LENTEN “TAIZE PRAYER” Wednesdays at 7pm - Old Mission

March 15, 22, 29 & April 5

All are welcome to our beautiful Taize Prayer Service This prayer for reconcilia-tion is clearly definitely needed right now in our times. Through meditative and simple chants, we are brought into the presence of God. We add twinkling candles and hear the Word of God. Then, we venerate a special cross—a replica of the cross of Taize. Our prayer will be bilingual. Please come and be nourished by this beautiful and meditative prayer on Wednesdays of Lent at 7:00 p.m. in the Old Mission Church.

P A R I S H L I B R A R Y N O T E S

As a Franciscan community, let me recommend some materials for our Lenten season: Lent & Easter-Wisdom from St. Frances and St. Clare of Assisi- John Kruse [264.1] leads us to a conversion pro-cess from the humility of the cross to the joy of Easter. St Francis & the Cross [Reflec ons on suffering, weakness and joy]- R. Cantalamessa OFM & Cardinal Mar ni SJ [208.1] reflect on the words of St. Francis about the Cross, its mystery and the graces that flow from it. Fran-cis and the San Damiano Cross [Medita ons on Spiritual Transforma on]– S. Saint Sing [208.1] is a powerful book about the cross at the San Damiano chapel that inspired Francis as a force for peace and transforma on. Praying with Francis of Assisi – J Stoutzenberger & J. Bohrer [208.1] allows those who use this book to learn that the spirituality of St. Francis fits naturally into the Chris an tradi on and reflects his great love for the Jesus of the Gospels.

Thank you to all who supported our Library Book Sale. The funds will be used to buy new DVD items for your

viewing pleasure.

S T E W A R D S H I P T H O U G H T

In today’s second reading, Tim-othy has issued a strong di-rec ve: “Bear your share of hard-ship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God.” For the early Chris ans this could mean torture and execu on. For most Chris ans today, enduring

hardship for the gospel might include accep ng ridicule or mockery, or the sugges on that we lack sophis ca-

on. Nevertheless, in his le ers, Saint Paul is adamant that we should not be ashamed of being followers of Christ. Good stewards are not ashamed of their alle-giance to Christ. They do not hide their faith. Reflect on this ques on: Are you willing to speak about following Christ Jesus no ma er who your listeners happen to be?

QUERIDOS AMIGOS

The Beau ful St. Joseph’s Table and Dinner ¡La Hermosa Mesa y Cena de San José!

Sunday March 19th, the Feast of St. Joseph 1:30 p.m. St. Francis Hall (Blessing of the Table)

2:00 p.m., (Dinner and Sales)

Everyone is invited to take part in this Italian tradi on of the St. Joseph’s Table. On the Feast of St. Joseph, families would open their homes to the community and especially to the poor. A stunning table is set up in the form of a cross and covered with baked foods, fruit, deli-

cious bread and other delicious foods. We invite parishioners to please bring their wrapped

and priced foods or fruit to the table. We will sell the home-made goodies and the money

will be given to charity. We will also serve a delicious Fe uccine Pasta dinner,

prepared by our own Sicilian Chef “Franco!” We only ask a dona on for the meal. Wine and oth-er beverages will be available for purchase. Fr. Vince will also serenade us in some Italian mu-sic! All the proceeds from this beau ful event

will be given to the poor. So bring your favorite dessert, bread or fruit to the event. You can

make Italian desserts, cookies or cakes or des-serts from your own culture! You may drop

them off in the hall when you come to Mass next Sunday.

St. Joseph, pray for us!
