BiographyMichelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6, 1475in Caprese near Arezzo, Tuscany. Several months after Michelangelo'sbirth, his family returned to Florence, where Michelangelo was raised.From here, he would grow to be one of the greatest living artist in his

lifetime, and ever since then he has been held to be one of the greatestartists of all time.

Michelangelo’s first works were two sculptures. In 1489, he leftGhirlandaio’s workshop and began to study sculpture in the gardens of Lorenzo de’ Medici. He lived at the ducal palace for three years in thecompany of the learned Humanists. Here, he

FIRST MAJOR WORK Michelangelo moved to Rome in

1497. Here, he develops a banker-client and sells his first importantwork to them: the Bacchus. Thestatue is somewhat over life-size anddepicts Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, in a revolutionary inebriatedstate.

THE PIETADuring the time of 1498-1499, Michelangelo sculpted his

masterpiece the PIETÀ for the French cardinal Jean deBillheres. The statue was made for the cardinal's funeralmonument, but was moved to its current location,the first chapel on the rightas one enters the basilica, inthe 18th century. It is theonly piece Michelangelo ever

signed.

DAVIDIn 1502, Michelangelo

returned to Florence, whichhad become a republic, andreceives an order from thelocal authorities for a bronzeDavid (finished by anotherartist and sent to France, nowlost) and a colossal marblestatue of DAVID . In 1504, hiscolossal DAVID was set up infront of the Palazzo dellaSignoria. The marble statuerepresents the Biblical heroDavid, a favoured subject inthe art of Florence.

THE SISTINE CEILINGIn 1508 Pope Julius decides to decorate hisuncle’s chapel (called the Sistine, afterPope Sixtus IV) and orders Michelangelo tofill the ceiling with frescoes. He proteststhat he is no painter but the Pope insistsand Michelangelo begins to work alone andin great discomfort. He finishes the SISTINECEILING frescoes (top) in 1512. Among themany scenes on the ceiling is one of hismost famous works – The Creation of Adam(bottom).

THE LAST WORK

In 1564 Michelangelo’s friendDaniele da Volterra watcheshim work all day February 12thon the RONDANINI PIETÀ. Twodays later he comes down witha fever but goes for a walk inthe cold night air, saying he

just can’t rest. He passed awayfour days later.
