DETAILED ANALYSIS CASTS A NEW

LIGHT ON BASQUIAT’S WORK

A SPECIAL EDITION: OVERSIZE,

LUXURIOUSLY ILLUSTRATED

The publication focuses on a series of 12 key works by Jean-Michel

Basquiat (1960-1988), created in the spring of 1983. The series draws

on the subjects most important in Basquiat’s oeuvre: from music,

anatomy, sports and comics via work, the economy, becoming and

decaying, to the history of African Americans and the history of art.

The book revolves around a series of 12 key works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, created in the spring of 1983 –

at the time when the artist’s oeuvre was at its most complex. The “Museum Security” series raises the

subjects most important in Basquiat’s oeuvre, including music, anatomy, sports, comics, the economy, the

history of African Americans and the history of art. His multi-layered exploration of socio-political issues,

ranging from discrimination and prejudices to capitalism, the market and subjugation reaches its pinnacle

in these paintings.

NEW YORK PAINTING

Over the course of the past years, painting has undergone a

spectacular renaissance in the arts capital of New York at the hands

of a generation of artists who will no longer be told how art should and

should not be made. Eleven positions reveal the current importance

and variety of a genre many believed had no future.

Today, it seems, painting is as alive in New York as it was during the period of Abstract Expressionism

in the 1950s and of pop art in the 1960s. The difference is that there is now a plurality of styles and

forms of expression. The spectrum ranges from the painterly experiments of Matt Connor via the wild

post-pop paintings of Eddie Martinez to the neo-conceptual approaches of the likes of Antek Walczak

and Ned Vena. Without prioritising any particular style, this volume documents the rich panorama of

the medium of painting, which has moved on from the ideological battles about its existence and plays

an important role once again.

CONTEMPORARY ART ON THE

OCCASION OF THE STÄDEL

ANNIVERSARY

John Baldessari is an important American conceptual artist and

the last member of the American post-war avant-garde. His large

collages, created for the Frankfurt exhibition, draw on masterpieces

at the Städel, from Lucas Cranach the Elder to Maria Lassnig.

A multifaceted opposition and juxtaposition of old and new art is

revealed by the texts and photographs.

By destroying all of his paintings created from 1953 to 1966 in 1970, John Baldessari (*1931) paved the

way for an independent and unmistakeable pictorial style between painting and photography, text and

image. He employs classic Modernist pictorial strategies such as montage and the integration of

everyday elements in order to confront these with artistic practices of the post-war avant-gardes, such

as discourses on consumerism and the media. Baldessari intertwines media and materials and thereby

combines entirely distinct groups of artistic subjects. In the process, the unambiguousness of the

pictorial language has given way to a multi-layered readability.

FIRST-EVER PUBLICATION

UMBERTO ECO

What is the mutual relationship between TV and art? The publication

introduces artistic strategies used to explore TV and its specific

contents and narrative forms in video, film, painting, sculpture and

performance, ranging from the sculptural object of the TV box to the

manipulation of the TV image and the use of its structure of lines and

pixels in works of art.

Television, which is among the most important inventions of the twentieth century, has developed

a unique aesthetic and new communication structures worldwide. The early 1960s, the beginning of

the development of TV as the fi rst visual mass medium, were also the beginning of an artistic

exploration of TV. From artists known for their work in this fi eld such as Nam June Paik and Wolf

Vostell to current works by younger generations of artists such as Thomas Demand, Tobias Rehberger,

Ulrich Polster and Melanie Gilligan, this publication focuses on the analysis, paraphrasing and

parody of TV formats and their pictorial nature, amongst other things.

Drawing is back! The publication “Drawing Now” presents

35 international artistic positions that represent drawing today and

take it in new directions. The works of art are no longer limited to

pencil, ink and paper. A multitude of subjects and forms invite the

reader to discover new aspects of this genre.

Drawing takes many forms in contemporary art, from the abstract to the representational, from small

to monumental formats, from rapidly created sketches to large-scale projects planned in minute detail.

In today’s drawings, the line extends from the drawing to the wall, expands into space or becomes a

video animation. The spectrum of its subjects ranges from personal experiences that are expressed

in spontaneous diary entries to political events. This publication explores riveting questions such as

how artists express the subjects that are of importance to them in their drawings.

Works include those by Silvia Bächli, Michaël Borremans, Toba Khedoori, Paul Noble, Robin Rhode,

David Shrigley, Sandra Vásquez de la Horra and Jorinde Voigt.

SCHIELE’S OEUVRE

SEQUEL TO THE SUCCESSFUL

PUBLICATION “EGON SCHIELE.

THE BEGINNING”

Today Egon Schiele (1890–1918) is celebrated as an artist at the

forefront of the international stage, although he spent almost his entire

life in Lower Austria and Vienna. This publication uses the most recent

sources and previously unpublished photographs to show how Schiele

developed essential elements of his expressive art and how influential

it remains to this day.

For Egon Schiele Lower Austria represented both the world in which he lived and a space of yearning.

He spent almost his entire life in this region, between Tulln, Krems, Klosterneuburg, Neulengbach,

Mühling and Vienna. These landscapes and towns are therefore important milestones in the artist’s

development. In addition to the individual creative periods and places, this volume also explores

previously neglected infl uences such as his interest in X-rays and the art of Franz von Stuck. The reader

discovers how Schiele developed his expressive art from the scientifi c and cultural currents of his time

and the degree to which his Lower Austrian oeuvre continues to set international standards.

MONET LOST IN TRANSLATION

A WHO-IS-WHO OF

IMPRESSIONISM

ATMOSPHERIC VIEWS OF CITIES

AND LANDSCAPES

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: CLAUDE

MONET AND HIS FAMOUS WATER

LILIES

The pinnacle of Impressionist art: This beautifully illustrated volume

brings together the key cityscapes and natural landscapes as well as

the lake and river landscapes by the most important Impressionists.

It shines a spotlight on Claude Monet’s water-lily paintings, which were

created in his legendary garden at Giverny.

This publication juxtaposes the work of the most famous Impressionists, from Alfred Sisley,

Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir to Paul Gauguin. Edgar Degas, who is often considered to have

been an Impressionist because he exhibited his work alongside theirs, is also represented. Some of

the cityscapes refl ect the hustle and bustle of Paris while atmospheric landscapes invite viewers to fall

into reveries. The publication illustrates not only the key works by these famous artists, but also the

oeuvres of the trailblazers of this so-called en plein-air painting, Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet

as well as Eugène Boudin and others. The famous haystacks series created by Claude Monet and his

breath-taking water lilies paintings in Giverny are the publication’s greatest highlight.

FAMOUS SURREALIST’S OEUVRE

UNPUBLISHED MATERIAL ON

THE SUBJECT OF MIRÓ’S

MONUMENTAL TRIPTYCHS

THE FIRST JOINT PRESENTATION

OF THE MAQUETTES FOR THE

UNESCO WALLS IN PARIS

Starting with the walls of his parental farm in Mont-roig, Joan Miró

was fascinated by the materiality and beauty of their expressive

surfaces and declared them to be the point of departure for his

paintings. The publication explores this central aspect of the artist’s

work and presents Miró’s important wall paintings in the context of his

oeuvre as a whole.

In search of simple, essential forms Joan Miró (1893–1983) created paintings in which he captured the

material beauty of walls with intense attention to detail and poetic expressiveness. The wall was not

merely the subject of the depiction, however, its physical and haptic quality inspired the artist to paint

on materials such as whitewashed canvas, raw burlap and sandpaper. His preference for elongated,

extremely narrow formats refl ects Miró’s exploration of the wall and simultaneously points to his late

ceramic friezes, including the important ’Birds taking Flight’ frieze in the collection of the Kunsthaus

Zürich, as well as monumental triptychs to which this catalogue pays extensive tribute.

EMIL NOLDETHE GREAT COLOUR WIZARD

GARDENS, LANDSCAPES AND

SEAS – NOLDE’S WORLD OF

COLOUR

THE FANTASTIC AND GROTESQUE

IN NOLDE’S WORK

AN ARTIST’S LIFE IN THE

GERMAN-DANISH BORDERLANDS

Emil Nolde was one of the most important exponents of Expressionism, and is

considered one of the main precursors of modernism. His virtuoso handling of colour

and the incomparable expressiveness of his paintings, watercolours, and Unpainted

Pictures astound viewers again and again, and ensure that every exhibition of his

work is a great success.

This volume was produced in close collaboration with the Nolde Stiftung Seebüll. The authors—

both noted Nolde experts—illuminate Nolde’s life and work and provide detailed discussions of

key compositions. The richly illustrated essay section and biography are supplemented by rarely

seen documents from the artist’s archive, making the book especially attractive to bibliophiles.

THE POWER OF LINE

LINES IN EUROPEAN, ASIAN AND

THE LINE AS AN ESSENTIAL

ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL MEANS

OF EXPRESSION

THE BOOK FEATURES ESSAYS

COVERING A VARIETY OF

ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES

In many cultures lines take centre stage in art and science, in writing,

drawing and construction. This publication explores the fascination and

power of the phenomenon of the line from the point of view of various

academic disciplines ranging from the history of art to philosophy and

the history of science.

There are no lines in nature; lines are always the expression of human actions, perception and design.

Lines divide or connect; they are sometimes static and sometimes gestural and full of movement;

they represent and create forms in space and time. The essays in this volume elucidate the semantic

and conceptual depth of the line in European, Asian and Islamic cultures and reveal the continuity and

transformation of the line over the course of centuries as a constitutive element in architecture,

art and writing and as a medium of expression in choreography and scientifi c and technological fi elds.

In the 1990s the landscape architect Peter Latz and his team

designed and executed a park that transcended all fashions and trends.

This volume provides insights into twelve years of planning and

realisation through photographs, sketches, plans and explanations, and

reveals to the reader a fascinating world in the footsteps of industry.

The Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord is one of the most remarkable examples worldwide of an

intelligent and appealing approach to dealing with the legacy of industry. In his vision for the park

Peter Latz largely abandoned the concept of landscape art and of the beautifi cation of agricultural

and woodland organisational patterns. Instead, he focused on the information-rich web of urban

infrastructure and industry. Peter Latz presents the fi rst in-depth account of his knowledge and

experience regarding this unique project in this book. Texts by renowned collaborators complement

the narrative with differing perspectives.

Approximately one billion units of accommodation will need to be built

them today will no longer be economically or ecologically affordable

in the future. How, then, should these dwellings look? The author intro-

duces international examples that also stand for a new architectural

outlook.

Cities all over the world are atrophying and the masses are moving to the suburbs. The construction

industry is booming – and continues to build the same old kinds of housing. But society is undergoing a

transformation. What sorts of dwellings do we need for our varied lifestyles today? Niklas Maak

presents international examples for new living arrangements beyond blocks of fl ats and single-family

houses. He shows that construction, living arrangements and the city itself must be reimagined –

beyond the classic categories of the private and the public.

A FASCINATING PORTRAIT OF

MUSIC SCENE IN THE 1960s AND

1970s

Born in Munich, Sepp Werkmeister has over the course of the last

decades made a name for himself as one of Germany’s leading jazz

photographers. He created insightful black-and-white portraits of all of

the greats, from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald to Oscar Peterson

and Miles Davis in Munich, New York and at international festivals.

His New York cityscapes of the 1960s and 1970s, which provide fascinating insights into the everyday

life of the American metropolis, have remained entirely unknown, however. Werkmeister captured the

entire panorama of New York’s urban society using his Rolleifl ex camera: the rubbish, the stranded and

the homeless on the one hand, and the rich and fashionably dressed inhabitants on the other hand.

This publication presents more than 120 pictures from the photographer’s archive.

Blurred landscapes, falling trees and the lofty peaks of the Pyrenees –

the extraordinary aesthetics of Ori Gersht’s work seduce the viewer.

But beneath the beautiful first appearances lie the sites of historical

events – in this way the artist makes visible what is no longer plain to see.

Ori Gersht (* 1967) views the landscape as the location of past events. On his journeys he follows the

traces of the past and translates the process of remembering into powerfully expressive images.

The impressive panorama of the Pyrenees, for example, is a site of a desperate fl ight from the National

Socialists. His works of art are metaphors for the unsolvable relationships between past and present,

between life and death. They are in the liminal space between (natural) forces and destruction on the

one hand, and beauty and grandeur on the other. The images unfold their poetry and horror

simultaneously in an extensive pictorial series.

THE FIRST VOLUME OF THE

FAMOUS MUSEUM WIESBADEN

ART COLLECTION CATALOGUE

The Museum Wiesbaden is one of three important Hessian state

museums and holds world-class collections in the fields of art and

natural history. This volume provides the first-ever lavishly illustrated

introduction to the museum’s art collections, which span the period

from the Middle Ages to contemporary art with an emphasis on the art

of the nineteenth and twentieth century.

The year 2015 marks the centenary of the completion of the building housing the Museum Wiesbaden.

The sumptuously illustrated catalogue introducing the museum and its collections celebrates this

anniversary. The museum building was opened in 1915, having been designed by Theodor Fischer four

years before and built starting in 1913. In addition to the natural-history collections, it houses the three

departments of Old Master Art, Classic Modernism and Modern and Contemporary Art. In a chronolo-

gically arranged overview of the art collections, which range from 1200 to the present day, the curators’

texts provide a vivid introduction to the collection areas and their specifi c histories.

A LOOK BEHIND THE SCENES

AT THE STATE MUSEUM

On the occasion of the state museum’s fortieth anniversary the publica-

tion presents central works from the nationally and internationally

renowned interdisciplinary collection. They range from Impressionism

via classic Modernism to contemporary in-situ installations. Readers

are introduced to the works and can look behind the scenes at the

museum.

The Berlinische Galerie is one of the capital’s youngest museums and collects art created in Berlin

between 1870 and the present, combining a focus on the local with international standards: from Max

Beckmann and Hannah Höch to Nan Goldin and Daniel Libeskind. A lavish sequence of photographs is

accompanied by texts about the challenges facing museums in the twenty-fi rst century. This unusual

book reveals how works of art are actually handled, from conservation measures to the ways in which

they are introduced to children and how curatorial concepts provide ever-changing interpretations of

works of art.

ALICJA KWADE

THE ARTIST’S MOST RECENT

WORK

AN ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION

OF LÉON FOUCAULT’S

PENDULUM EXPERIMENT

INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED

CONTEMPORARY ARTIST,

AWARDED WITH THE 2015

HECTOR PRICE

The most recent installation by the internationally acclaimed artist

Alicja Kwade (b. 1979), who comes from Katowice, explores the French

physicist Léon Foucault’s (1819–1868) proof that the world rotates

and develops the experiment further. The present volume illustrates

the playful exploration of space and time using recent pictures from

the Schirn rotunda.

The Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade’s scientifi c-looking experimental setups are reminiscent of

surreal and phantasmagorical constellations and objects. The fascination of her work, which cannot

be explained by reason alone, is rooted in the skilful superimposition and sometimes paradoxical

nature of scientifi c and social realities. Things that are generally taken to be established facts are

called into question and disproved. Here the artist explores the true movement of time, which will

have an immediate effect on both space and the viewer.

CONTEMPORARY

INTERPRETATIONS OF THE

STYLE OF THE OLD MASTERS

WORKS OF ART BY PAVEL

FEINSTEIN 2013 –2015

FASCINATING PICTORIAL

SUBJECTS, EXECUTED IN A

SURPRISING MANNER

Citrus fruits with empty oyster shells, chicken eggs stamped with

best-before dates and unmoving nudes in empty spaces: Inspired by

seventeenth-century painting, Pavel Feinstein transposes artistic

traditions to the present day, toys with the viewer’s perceptions and

sometimes even blurs the boundaries between the painter and the

model.

Pavel Feinstein’s painting style is unmistakeable. A grey, undefi ned background underpins a pictorial

subject, one or several objects, carefully arranged and sensuously captured. Although his work may

inevitably bring to mind the compositions of earlier colleagues, such as Cézanne, Manet or Van Gogh,

Feinstein’s work is characterised by additional elements: He transposes desirable objects into austere

spaces and imbues his ensembles with a mysterious, melancholy air through purposeful composi-

tion. In collaboration with Galerie Kiefer this volume presents the still lifes and nudes created by the

Moscow-born artist, who emigrated to Germany in 1980 and now works in Berlin.

A MULTIFACETED AND ORIGINAL

SPECTRUM OF ARTISTIC

SUBJECTS

The painter Peter Schermuly (1927–2007) created works of an artful

reality whose meticulously detailed concreteness is the expression of

pure painting. This catalogue raisonné makes accessible his entire

oeuvre of oil paintings and sketches as well as wall designs. It presents

an art that carved out space for itself contrary to all trends.

Schermuly’s mutable and original oeuvre led him out of an abstraction governed by visual rules and into

the fascination of reality-inspired colour. The intensity of his gaze explored what the appearance of the

world has to offer to a virtuoso colourist for a painting. He was interested not in recreation but in

understanding the visible to develop colour phenomena suitable for painting. Profound knowledge of

the history of the art of painting was for Schermuly a guarantee of his originality. The elaborately

designed and lavishly produced book presents an artist of rare distinction from the isms of the second

half of the twentieth century.

PUBLICATION ON THE

CENTENARY OF BERNARD

SCHULTZE'S BIRTHDAY

31 May 2015 would have been Bernard Schultze’s one-hundredth

birthday. On the occasion of this anniversary the publication featuring

approximately eighty works of art honours the extensive oeuvre of one

of the most important Art Informel artists.

As a co-founder of the QUADRIGA artists’ group Bernard Schultze made an important contribution to

the establishment of Art Informel in Germany. This art movement rejected both realistic fi guration

and “formulaic” geometric abstraction, drawing instead on intuitive creative powers. The book

presents delicately coloured and black-and-white drawings and boldly colourful oil paintings

as well as Schultze’s important reliefs and sculptures. Texts by art historians, authors, psychoanalysts

and fellow artists and texts and poems by Bernard Schultze himself paint a multifaceted picture of

this important post-war artist’s oeuvre.

RUSSIAN LACQUER

THE FIRST PUBLICATION TO

COLLECTION OF THE MUSEUM OF

LACQUER ART IN MÜNSTER

INDISPENSABLE FOR

COLLECTORS AND DEALERS

The museum of Lacquer Art has what is probably the most important

collection of Russian lacquer wares outside Russia. The works of art

date to the period between the early nineteenth century and the 1950s,

providing an extensive overview of the development of this flourishing

art and craft.

Russian lacquer art can be traced back to Peter the Great, who had come to know this fl ourishing art

and craft during his study trips in Western Europe. The fi rst important work in this genre in the tsar’s

empire was completed in 1722 in the form of the Lacquer Study in his palace of Monplaisir. A second

signifi cant event followed when the Korobov workshop, which was modelled on the Braunschweig-

based Stobwasser workshop, was established in 1793 near Moscow. It is better known by the name of

a later owner, Lukutin. A technical and artistic alignment with the German model was followed by an

increasingly independent Russian development from the 1820s onwards. At fi rst this found expression

in specifi c decorative techniques, and later also in specifi cally Russian motifs.

A PINNACLE OF THE ART OF

TIMELESS MASTERPIECES

They are one of the highlights of the world of jewellery. From the rec-

tangular to the round and rounded: Cufflinks are timeless eye catchers.

Those who adorn their shirt sleeves with such works of art can be sure

to attract attention. This knowledgeable publication introduces readers

to the world of cufflinks, tracing their story and showing rare designs.

Cuffl inks are among the few pieces of jewellery worn by men and, like wristwatches, are an essential

part of men’s fashion. The fi rst cuffl inks appeared as early as the seventeenth century, but they

did not come into common usage until the late eighteenth century as their development was closely

connected to that of men’s shirts. Nowadays cuffl inks are little artworks that allow men to express

their own personality in an understated way. Their design and the materials from which they are

made can speak volumes about the wearer’s preferences, hobbies and profession. Designers are

fascinated by the challenge as cuffl inks provide only very little space for their design, and the four

buttons that make up a pair have to be well coordinated. The most exquisite examples are nowadays

often to be found in drawers and display cases belonging to collectors and museums. This publication

presents more than 200 of these treasures..
