PROFILE

With an increasing number of cheap imports entering the Australian marketplace, hire companies need to ensure that these products, including lighting towers, are backed by adequate service support mechanisms.

Kennards Hire carries a broad range of lighting towers nation-ally including Halogen, Softlite,

Barrel, Balloon, Solar and LED. General Manager of Kennards Hire

Traffic, Greg Pearce, says that a key consid-eration is to decide which type of lighting tower to hold in order to satisfy demand.

“The type of industry will dictate what type of product is used. Halogen lighting has dominated most hire company fleets, but this is changing with new smarter technology emerging in lighting,” Pearce told Hire & Rental Australasia.

“For Kennards, a product has to tick a number of boxes for us to take it on. These include solid design for the hire industry, effective lighting, ease of use for the customer, technical and service support, noise levels, and fuel consumption.

“Customers are no longer accepting of the ‘old clunker’ lighting tower and you need to be providing a lighting tower that’s an all-rounder in the field. Technology in the LED area is getting better and better each year and moving to a point where it will dominate the markets in the future.

“Having said that, there are many Halogen lighting towers being pur-chased in our industry, so I suspect they are going to be around for some time.”

Pearce observes that one of the nota-ble changes in the industry over the last few years is the amount of OEMs sup-plying lighting towers into Australia with mixed results.

“The point about cheap imports that is most concerning is the lack of service support mechanisms once the product has come into the country.

“Whilst the base cost looks attrac-tive, the longer view for Kennards and most hire companies is about having a supply partner that can provide a

cradle-to-grave approach. The hire industry can be a harsh environment and we need to make sure that we are purchasing quality equipment, and that when service and parts are required, we are able to call on our supply partners. Service can be missing with some of the cheaper imports.

“We have found that a critical factor for success is ensuring adequate sup-port and backup. There are also more projects demanding higher standards in the type of lighting, noise levels and

fuel consumption, and this is where new technologies will become more evident in the future.

“In relation to the current economic climate, the slowdown in the mining industry has seen a large number of lighting towers in particular coming out of these areas and being spread back into city locations. However, a number of large construction projects are com-mencing or planned so we should see the demand for lighting towers pick up in 2014.”

According to Arron Cooper, Prod-uct Manager at JLG Industries, the use of LED lights and fuel

efficient engines has greatly reduced fuel consumption, allowing the units to run longer between refuelling. “This, coupled with the addition of auto start/stop con-trollers, is providing a major cost saving for our customers,” he told Hire & Rental Australasia.

“Other recent technological develop-ments include extra low voltage high out-put LED lights, sound proofing, quieter running engines and new exhaust systems resulting in reduced noise levels. In ad-dition, the use of satellite GPS and Next G connected telematic systems on tower lighting units is growing, especially in the regional and remote locations.

“The future is likely to bring further improvements in LED lighting capabilities and technologies. This includes increased fuel efficiency, larger lighting capability, lower cost of ownership and better return on investments.”

JLG recently released three new light-ing towers, including Metro 4000 and two LED models. The LED-6 has 6 X 380W LED lights while the LED-8 has 8 X 380W LED lights.

Cooper says both the LED-6 and the LED-8 have a hydraulic articulating tel-escopic mast allowing increased outreach and a height up to 8 metres, and are easy for one person to position and set up.

“The large fuel tank coupled with low fuel consumption allows approximately 250

hours of running time between refuelling. JLG LED lighting towers operate on a 48V DC extra low voltage system,” he explained.

“In addition to the LED-6 and LED-8 lighting towers, we have launched the JLG Metro 4000 which has a hydraulic mast up to 9m, 4x1000 metal halide lights, and weighs just 1100kg. It is easy for one per-son to set up and has an exceptionally low noise output of 60dbA which makes it ide-al for applications such as road work, civil work in the urban environment, and car park lighting, as well as shows and events.

“JLG’s best selling unit has always been the 6308AN Mine Spec model available in both a 4 and 6 light configuration. These are rugged and reliable units used on road construction sites and to light mine site internal roads for night transport of ore and materials. The mine sites are also us-ing the units as work area lighting on mine walls and stock piles.

“Feedback received during ‘Voice of The Customer’ visits highlighted that the main features hire companies were looking for are proven reliability, the ability to supply parts and service promptly when required into regional and remote locations, and the ability to transport multiple units long distances to remote locations, as this has a large impact on transport costs for both the hire companies and their customers.

“JLG lighting towers are designed for side-by-side loading on a truck tray allow-ing for 7 units to be transported at once on a semi-trailer or 11 units at a time on a B-Double.

LED innovation shows the way forwardAlthough it is still early days in terms of market penetration, continuing advances in the development of LED lighting technology are already showing the way to delivering substantial benefits including greater lighting capabilities and return on investment, writes HARTLEY HENDERSON.

“An important change within the in-dustry in the last few years is the greater number of imported lighting towers on the market, but we emphasise that Aus-tralian made for Australian conditions is a bonus when you buy JLG lighting towers.”

All JLG lighting towers are designed and built in Port Macquarie for Austral-ian conditions and the facility is ISO 9001 Accredited.

Time for LEDAccording Daniel Scott, Product Manager at Powerlite Generators, the company has been watching the emerging LED technol-ogy for some time, waiting for it to reach a point where it was satisfied it would fulfil customer’s needs.

“This time is now, and we are rapidly moving to offer LED solutions in place of traditional metal halide and induction lighting. To this end, we are about to re-lease two new products onto the market,” he said.

“The first is a 4 Head LED Lighting Tower that utilises Sylvania lamps that produce an impressive 136,000 lumens.

“The other development is the LED Softlite which is manufactured in Aus-tralia and has a future proofed design to allow for improvements in LED technology. These towers, which will incorporate 4x640w 48v/DC non-directional lamps that output 320,000 lumens (before dif-fuser losses), are scheduled for release in early 2014.

“The rise of LED technol-ogy has opened up a whole world of

possibilities with low voltage systems and smaller engine sizes. Powerlite has been looking at the potential of inverter tech-

nology to take maximum advantage of the lower outputs and therefore achieve an exceptional boost to fuel conservation. As the levels of efficacy advance, the possible applications for running from solar power and bat-teries increase exponentially.”

Scott says Powerlite’s best-selling item is the SMC TL-90 Lighting Tower, which is a small urban unit that is suited to hire companies for general use on construction sites, road works and events.

“It is suited to these applications due to its small size, robust construction

and low cost, and for this reason we are adapting the basic tower to now carry the LED lamps and Softlite as well as metal halide lamps,” he explained.

“Hire and rental companies are look-ing for no-fuss, low maintenance lighting equipment that they know will achieve a good return on their investment. The equipment needs to be able to suit mul-tiple applications as it allows a company to reduce the number of different pieces of equipment they need in stock and this in turn reduces their overheads for spare parts and maintenance. This is why Pow-erlite has had success with the SMC TL-90 as it ticks all of these boxes and we offer a full service department and carry many spare parts.

“The main changes to the industry recently are largely due to mining. Like many industries in Australia the require-ments of mine operation have flowed on to regular life and we have seen the develop-

ment of Mine Spec lighting towers,

which Powerlite offers in the MDG 15 Tower,

as well as the push for LED and low voltage design allowing the lighting equipment to be plug-and-play without the need for an electrician to operate the equipment.”

LED NightOwl releaseBryn Jones at NEPEAN NightOwl Light Towers advises that the company has been researching and developing the use of LED lamps within mobile light towers for industrial, road work and mining applica-tions for over two years.

“After testing and researching LED lamps from numerous manufacturers across the globe, we recently released the 24VLED low voltage portable light tower. The latest LED lamps are capable of producing 20,000 Lumens and consuming a mere 240W at 24VDC, so they use low voltage for safety

and allow lower fuel consump-tion,” he said.

“A key change in the industry in the last few years has been the introduction of feasible alternatives to the stock standard metal halide light towers. Customers can now

choose to differentiate their range to suit a wider variety of project specific requirements.

“We find that our customers who embrace a variety of light towers tend to pick up work by having that point of difference. Some examples include

the need for low glare lights in roadside applications and low glare where natural surroundings can be disrupted by flood lamp type lights.

“Hire and rental companies in particular are looking for high quality, low maintenance, locally manufactured light towers with locally based support.”

LED conversion packsFollowing the launch of its Greenlite Low Voltage LED tower in July, PROMAC has been working on conversion packs for metal halide towers.

The company’s General Manager, Andrew McAdam, ex-plains that these packs allow clients to change existing towers into LED towers or to implement a full conversion to low volt-age by installing a new engine and DC alternator. “As far as I’m aware, we’re the only manufacturer offering this full conversion for both our own products and other OEMs towers,” he said.

“Next year will see the release of our new Micro LED tower which is a low voltage LED tower with all the safety features and specifications demanded on current work sites, but contained in a significantly smaller tower and mast design.

“It is targeted more towards civil contracting, construction and road building projects. The smaller trailer size means much lower mobe/demobe cost and it can be towed by a standard sedan or SUV. Our existing towers, due to their heavy-duty nature, tend to be used by mining companies, large contractors and hire com-panies servicing the resources sector.

“In terms of general technological developments in the indus-try, the change from 240v to 24 and 48v DC has been a huge leap, specifically in relation to safety performance and maintenance

Page 12: Hire & Rental Australasia

LIGHTING

requirements. By removing the 240v output you have eliminated the inherent risks of high voltage electrical equipment and reduced the costs of looking after the equipment.

“When talking about low voltage LED the most important consideration is the improvement in safety performance (reduced shock and burn risk) and environmental improvements (re-duced emissions, reduced noise, and zero UV).

“Low voltage products can be main-tained by auto electricians instead of hav-ing to call out a high voltage sparky. This means most sites can undertake their own maintenance rather than requiring an ex-ternal contractor.

“Also, everybody now understands the scale of the energy savings delivered by using LED in place of metal halide towers. To start with, fuel consumption is reduced by around 75 percent or 12,000 litres of diesel annually.

“Whilst this is a significant saving in its own right, there is also a range of in-cremental savings associated with this reduction including longer running time per tank of fuel, reduced emissions (CO2 and diesel particulate), and lower servic-ing demands on maintenance teams.

“Reductions in the consumption of fragile metal halide globes have also oc-curred – the LEDs are warranted for 3 years and are mounted behind impact resistant lens to reduce the likelihood of stone damage.”

Hybrid towerPR Power has launched a new PR-Hybrid Lighting Tower that utilises LED lighting with advanced battery power systems.

The company says this is the first and only hybrid tower on the market. It fea-tures a hybrid battery/diesel system with auto charging technology and runs on 90 percent battery power and 10 percent fuel. The battery is automatically recharged via a low battery monitor system through the integral 5.0kVA generator, combining 7 hours battery power with 7 hours genera-tor usage.

Operations Manager at PR Power, Richard Italiano, points out that the PR-Hybrid’s batteries have been configured so that they can also be recharged by ordinary mains power. “The battery has 4000 hours life and the generator engine consumes just 0.5 litres per hour when

in use – fuel usage is so low that the set can run for over 500 hours on one tank of fuel,” he said.

“Using a PR-Hybrid lighting tower will result in immediate operating savings. Just 150 watts of LED power consumption yields an equivalent illumination level of 400 watts of metal halide and a LED lamp has 70,000 hours of life compared with 6000 hours for a metal halide light.

“This product offers a range of environ-mental benefits such as zero emissions and noise, as well as reduced power consump-tion due to utilisation of the LED lights.

“New technologies such as LED lamps, solar power, and hybrid energy solutions are at the forefront of new developments in the lighting tower industry.

“LED lighting is still in its infancy and requires further design improvements and technological advancements to make it a truly effective and powerful light source. However, it is definitely gar-nering extensive industry interest and will continue to develop and improve over time.

“LED is a very good lighting op-tion for certain applications such as maintenance work, civil works, construc-tion and events.”

Italiano believes that a major issue confronting the industry is the amount of poorly designed cheaper lighting tower options built in low cost countries that have entered the Australian market which are not suited to the rigours and demands of Australian conditions, and which compete purely on price.

In recent times PR Power has also intro-duced the PR4000-LED Lighting Tower, PR4000- Ballon Lighting Tower, and PR8000-FH Mine Spec Lighting Tower.

LED R&DRichard Sweet, Product Manager at CAPS Australia, which distributes Allmand lighting towers, advises that Allmand are currently carrying out R&D trials in the USA on LED lamps.

“LED technology has been changing quickly and what was considered good twelve months ago has been superseded already. Allmand is conscious of this changing technology and wants to be sure when it releases any LED products that it will be a market leader, rather than have obsolescence as an issue within a few months, which has been the case with some manufacturers over the past two years,” he said.

“In the meantime, Allmand will of-fer its current range of metal halide SHO 1000 watt with 110,000 or 1,250 watt with 150,000 lumen lamps which are still clearly one of the market leaders for illuminating a worksite. In addition, the all new Allmand Night-Light NLPRO 2V vertical lighting tower is just being re-leased in Australia. It is very compact and designed primarily for the rental industry and urban usage.

“With LED technology, smaller en-gines are used to provide the lower voltage required, so it follows that some savings in fuel consumption would result. How-ever, there is still a question as to whether

smaller engines have the required reliability, or that they might suffer other issues such as vibration and reduced lon-gevity in harsh environments operating 10-12 hours per

day. “Interestingly, Australia seems

to be leading the field in requiring LED technology, but in the USA and many other countries, metal halide lamps are still the preferred light source. However, most manufac-turers, including Allmand, are no doubt investigating LED because it seems to be the light source of the future.

“When the previous federal government introduced a carbon tax there was a perceived need in the industry to look at going

‘green’. LED was the catch cry and do-mestic LED lighting was finding its way

into new buildings and

automobiles, so lighting towers is another step along the way.”Sweet says the portable lighting tower market is very competi-

tive and there is a degree of sophistication. He points to some end users requesting numerous expensive options for a machine, which greatly increases the capital cost of the unit but does not provide any additional light source.

“On the other hand there is a requirement for smaller lighter machines for urban construction zones and events etc that do not need the level of sophistication required by some mine sites or the heavy duty construction of the larger machines. The Allmand Night-Light NLPRO 2V is designed for these applications.

“Perhaps there is a need to more closely consider the purpose of a portable lighting tower and how it is to be used.”

Mining sector focusGenie has launched a new series of Australian-built light towers in response to customer demand for a rugged product suitable for work in the Australian mining sector.

“With many of our customers supplying Genie equipment including boom lifts to the mining sector, we were constantly fielding queries about the opportunity to support them with a quality, mine specified lighting tower,” says Brad Lawrence, Gen-eral Manager of Genie.

“The standard model in the AL6 series is a 6000 watt unit with a 9000 watt model variant, and key features of the series relate to ease of set-up and operation. “With the drawbar retracted and the mast stowed, six of the AL6-6000 units can be carried on a

standard flatbed truck. “On-site, the hydraulic mast allows op-erators to easily set up the lighting tower with minimal effort. With this unit there is no need for winches and cables. Once the outriggers have been deployed set up is easily achieved with the flick of a switch and the three-stage mast is up and working. The mast can be manually rotated, and the light head can be tilted electrically from the ground control station for precise illumina-tion of the work area.

“The most important factor customers consider when review-ing lighting towers is reliability and the support network the provider is able to offer. Local support is very important. Meeting Australian Standards and mine specification options are other factors considered when purchasing lighting towers.”

Lawrence believes that while LED lighting is state-of-the-art at present, it still has some way to go before the savings from im-proved fuel consumption are matched by efficiencies in the cost of production, which will eventually come.

“LED lighting towers will be the next big thing to happen in the industry. Certainly, environmental impact continues to be a growing consideration as manufacturers and consumers are becoming more environmentally responsible in their choices,” he said.

Industry outlookPROMAC’s Andrew McAdam believes that whilst there has been a cooling off in project start-ups recently, these things are his-torically cyclical and demand will increase going forward as economic conditions improve.

“The cost savings from LED are now so obvi-ous and well proven that there will have to be a transition as existing units in company fleets are replaced, and indeed as a move to convert metal halide to LED where practical gathers pace,” he told Hire & Rental Australasia.

“Two areas where we are seeing some growth and new penetration are customers serving the gas industry, and the emergence of hire companies with a special focus on environmentally friendly products/solutions, such as Green Energy Hire in Adelaide.

“I am seeing more focus from miners on their energy consumption and emissions control, both of which sit well with our LED products. There will always be demand for mobile lighting – the very nature and location of mining projects mean that access to fixed power sources and lighting is restricted.

“For the future, I see con-tinued effort to improve ef-ficiency and lighting output from LED and further research into alterna-tive, environmentally friendly power sources for the units as well.

“The restriction on CAPEX is a big chal-lenge for many large mining companies, so this should be

driving more work towards the hire sector and leasing arrange-ments, although that is being balanced somewhat by the scaling back of many projects.

“A major change in the light tower industry is the emergence of new suppliers, challenging the market share of long-established manufacturers, especially through the supply of machines manu-factured offshore.

“The important thing is that we continue to listen to our customers and use their feedback to improve the products and service that we offer, which is where suppliers have fallen down in the past. You cannot rest on your laurels - you must be responsive and open to new technology. Ultimately, I believe that LED light-ing has a very bright future.”

Genie’s Brad Lawrence says the rental industry has certainly experienced tough times recently but the worst seems to be over and improvements are now being seen.

“As a global manufacturer our focus is always to be resilient, navigate our way through tough times, and stay a strong supplier and business partner for our customers,” he said.

“A major issue for the industry is that many rental companies have ageing fleets. A lot of rental companies have not purchased new equipment in recent times and their average fleet age has increased.

“Another issue is that as a manufacturer it is a continuous struggle to compete against the pricing of imported lesser quality machines and still maintain a quality product and the infrastruc-ture required to support the equipment in the field.”

Lawrence points out that like all industries, there is always room for continuous improvement and product development is often evolutionary by nature.

“The greatest opportunities for design changes in the light-ing tower range would have to be in relation to environmental improvements with lower carbon emissions, increased operating efficiencies, and remote technologies that allow monitoring and control from distant locations, all of which ultimately provide the owner with greater return on investment,” he said.

Daniel Scott at Powerlite Generators says the industry is be-coming ever more competitive as companies tighten their belt to better weather any future economic issues.

“This has led hire companies to want more ‘bang for their buck’, with superior products that will have less downtime for maintenance and repair, thus being available for hire and gen-erating revenue rather than sitting in the yard awaiting repair,” he said.

“The main issue confronting the industry as it currently stands is the ability to provide the best quality solutions for a competitive price. This is why Powerlite strives to have all of its developing technology designed and manufactured in Australia, allowing us to have a better handle on the quality and avoiding large transportation costs and problems with supply.

“Future directions for the industry are both exciting and challenging. As LED efficacy improves and heat generation reduces, lighter lamps will be possible due to the reduction in heat sinks. The cost of the technology will begin to drop and, coupled with the reduction in weight, evermore innovative de-signs will be possible.

“The real challenge is to try and stay ahead of what customers want and be in a position to respond to those needs as quickly as possible.”

PRESSURE CLEANERS & PUMPS

feature

Technological advances boost equipment efficiencySignificant technological developments are enhancing the productivity of a wide range of pressure cleaning and pumping equipment, but some industry issues remain challenging, reports HARTLEY HENDERSON.

From more fuel efficient drive systems and improved frames and protec-tion systems to advanced on-board

operational control technology, many of today’s pressure cleaners and pump prod-ucts are delivering substantial productiv-ity benefits.

However, it also appears that a growing range of issues is confronting the industry including cheap and poor quality imports from low cost countries, often with minimal service backup, as well as concerns about the escalating impact of internet sales.

Pressure Right, which distributes port-able equipment from BBA Pumps in Hol-land, plans to release several new pumps and ancillaries onto the Australian mar-ket in early 2014.

The company’s Managing Director, Simon Panther, advises that these include a new second generation PT Wellpoint de-

watering piston pump with an increased pump efficiency of 10 percent. “This

product is more fuel efficient with its fully bunded 200 litre fuel

tank lasting over a week operating around the

clock,” he said.

“Advanced onboard technology for starting and operational controls is be-coming more prevalent and adding to the efficiency of pump products. Also, the ability to set operational control pa-rameters and receive telemetry alarms, or dial into GSM modems to look at en-gine data from various pieces of control equipment like f low meters and pressure transducers, adds a significant amount of value to getting the best out of your pump set.

“Currently, our best selling port-able pumps within the BBA range are the BA100K, BA150E and the PT90. The BA100K is a small lightweight 100mm portable pump for hire, civil construction and utilities, and a fixed trailer design unit weighing in at under 750KG has been spe-cifically built for the hire industry.

“Price, reliability, durability and per-formance are the fundamental aspects that customers are demanding in any new pump purchase, especially in the hire industry. In a competitive environment our customers need low cost ownership, longer service intervals, fuel savings, er-gonomic design and clear instructions.

INNOVATIVE RENTAL SOLUTIONS

PRESSURE CLEANERS & PUMPS

“A significant change in the industry in the last few years has been a growing demand for pump products that allow civil companies and the hire industry to procure and deploy a pump that offers a multiple range of applications. These pumps need to achieve this as efficiently and as cost effectively as possible with reductions in servicing, spare parts and fuel consumption without sacrificing performance.

“The demand for silenced canopies on pumps in recent years to impact noise attenuation and security has also had an effect on the portable pump industry. Gone are the days where you could build an old steel box and put it over a piece of pumping plant. For pump manufacturers like BBA the canopy has become part of the whole concept.”

Panther adds that new global tier levels surrounding emis-sions control standards are receiving greater attention. “Al-though these regulations are not yet a mandatory requirement here in Australia, many government and other major projects are weighting them heavily in tender documents,” he said.

Increased safety awarenessSpitwater has recently released a number of new pressure cleaner products including a commercial petrol engine powered range upgrade, as well as an industrial diesel engine powered model.

The company’s Milo Gajin says the new Evolution 2 and Evo-lution 3 pumps from Interpump, fitted to the new HC15275P and the HE15250P models, are easier to use and with this improved productivity, fuel consumption decreases because equivalent work can be performed in a shorter period of time. He also be-lieves there is a greater overall awareness of work health and safety

issues among users of pressure cleaning equipment. “In addition to this, in light of some major industrial accidents

involving this type of equipment, mainly due to underspecified equipment and lack of proper training, there have been moves to create a new Australian Standard for pressure cleaners,” he told Hire & Rental Australasia.

“This will truly set the minimum standards for manufactur-ers, importers and resellers on the on one hand and users on the other, and will among other things look at safety equipment and correct equipment use.

“The best selling products in the Spitwater range are definitely our hot/cold water pressure cleaners. We are the only company that truly manufactures its own range of hot/cold pressure clean-ers in Australia. Our machines are designed for tough Australian working conditions and the main applications include industrial cleaning, use by large transport companies, and large outdoor commercial surface cleaning.”

According to Milo Gajin, a key change over the last few years in the industry has been the demise of the Australian-made product.

“The appreciation of the local currency has killed off the smaller manufacturers and ensured that the mar-ket was flooded by cheap imports from all over the world, mainly from China and the US,” he said.

“Many of the imports were of a much lower standard, particularly in the engine driven ranges, causing a lot of heartache to the legitimate local suppliers. With the currency back down a little, some of the balance has been restored but the market is still very volatile.

“Hire and rental companies are looking particularly at price and reliability – the equipment has to be as inexpensive as pos-sible and last as long as possible. We are not the cheapest, but we offer quality products, as well as reliable service and parts sup-port with branch offices in every capital city and trained dealers in all major regional centres.”

Cheap importsJetwave’s Shane Rundle believes a major issue confronting the pressure cleaner industry is the prevalence of cheap inferior al-ternative products and parallel/grey imports of reputable brand engines from China.

“These imports often have no warranty or service backup in Australia. This relates not only to engines but also to accesso-ries such as nozzles and hose reels, which leads to much lower

customer satisfaction as these products often break down and wear out quicker,” he said.

“In the marketplace there is a lot of over infla-tion of performance data by some overseas manu-facturers and it is very hard to check the valid-ity of numbers, such as psi performance.

“For hire and rental companies, units that are quality built will yield a higher return on invest-ment because they will lead to decreased down-time, reduced service and maintenance costs, and most importantly of all, a more satisfied customer.

“For the buyer of equipment, it is important to compare ‘apples with apples’ in terms of quality and value when looking at different products from different manufacturers, rather than just comparing performance and price tag. The best advice is to stick with purchasing from a genuine OEM.” New pressure cleaner products from Jetwave include the Hire

Hornet range specifically built for the hire industry, the Mine Boss range for the mining industry, and Marine Boss for the marine and shipping industry. For further information visit www.jetwave.com.au

Rundle says the latest technological developments include the use of different drive systems to suit the applications and harsh environments that these units are going into. We use innovative frames and protection systems, and we are con-tinually seeking new and improved parts from overseas sup-pliers, such as the new Zero pressure regulation valve which increases operator safety,” he explains.

“We have a strong focus on maintaining a competitive high quality product at a reasonable price, and remaining globally integrated with our supply chain while continuing to stay lo-cally responsive to our distributors and customers.”

Product overloadJohn Warne at Pumps Australia says a major change impacting the industry in recent years is product overload in the market due to an invasion of cheap products from China that have forced the cost down of all original manufactured products.

“Over the last 12 months the market has been very subdued and it is additionally hard to make a dollar when Chinese import-ers just buy and dump and make a larger margin than Australian companies,” he said.

“Another major issue facing the industry is the impact of buying online from around the world. This has created an

uneven playing field for Australia pro-ducers as the government is allowing overseas suppliers to compete unfairly in the Australian market.

“Online sales miss out on paying ex-pensive clearance charges by clearance agencies, as well as fuel levies, processing fees and security levies. In addition, the online buyer circumvents the system by not having to pay GST, while on the other hand, my company and my customers have to pay this tax.”

Pumps Australia has patented a Smart Drive System for the new IGX390 Honda 13HP engine which Warne says is delivering huge improvements in fuel conservation.

“The industry is looking for reliability, very low prices and efficient operation, and the Smart Drive System, which is cost neutral to our standard range, is deliver-ing on these requirements,” he said.

“We have also designed high pressure hot and cold cleaners with a 12 Volt boiler control system. These 3000psi and 4000psi petrol and diesel driven units are very safe to operate.

“Interestingly, amongst our best selling products are Never Flat Tyres which are foam tyres for buggies and trolleys that we have designed and manufactured to over-come the problem of new tyres going flat on work sites.”

New StandardsHarold Muller, General Manager of Thor-oughClean, advises that updated versions of AS/NZS 4233:1 (operator training re-quirements) and AS/NZS 4233:2 (manu-facturing requirement) were released on 13 December 2013.

“One major change that should drive compliance with these standards is operator training frequency. This has been changed from retraining every 6 months to every 2 years. Every 6 months was impractical, hence very few people complied with the stand-ards,” Muller told Hire & Rental Australasia.

“There have been some significant changes in the industry in the last few years including increased awareness of the usefulness of a high pressure pump, which was traditionally mostly used for cleaning, but is now used for a range of applications

including hydro excavation, surface prep-aration, cutting, reverse osmosis and fire fighting. In droughts, it is seen as a water saving device, providing high pressure/low volume Vs low pressure/high volume.

“Due to the high Australian dollar, im-ported components such as pumps, by-pass valves and hose have become much more affordable, so more people have access to pressure cleaners. But this also makes it harder to export a complete machine.

“A major challenge for Australian man-ufacturers is the import of cheap products. They are sold as having the same pressure/flow ratings, but they are not built to the same Aussie quality, and most do not comply with Australian standards.

“Also, the decline in the resource sector has had an influence on the industry, and the market is likely to get even tougher as more manufacturers shut down.”

Muller says economic pressure con-tinues to be a key issue confronting the industry. “We compete in a country which has the third highest manufacturing cost in the world – more than Germany, the UK and USA,” he said.

“But this is a great industry and as an engineer, I love designing products to ad-dress my customers’ needs and solving their problems.”

ThoroughClean has launched a new addition to its line of heavy-duty pres-sure cleaners. The P13R-36H is a heavy-duty, hot water rental spec portable petrol machine that the company says is ideal for any job that demands heat and high pressure in a tough environment. Muller says degreasing of machines, workshop floors, parking areas and driveways are typical applications for this unit, which is especially designed for the hire and rental industry to ensure the lowest cost of own-ership and the maximum uptime over its 15 year design life.

Protection clothing Aussie Pumps has released a new range of high pressure protection clothing

designed for use with pressure cleaners up to 7300psi (500 Bar).

According to the company’s General Manager, Warwick Lorenz, 90 percent of hire companies rent machines up to 4,000psi, and he points out that machines at approximately 300 Bar can take out your eye, cut off a toe or damage opera-tors in many other ways.

“As hire companies are presented with a client base that would rather rent than buy, they may have to take some

responsibility in the future for ensuring that the customer has the opportunity to rent safety clothing at the same time as the machine,” Lorenz said.

“Our range of Aussie Safe Operator clothing, which includes overalls, jackets, trousers and aprons, is made of a strong new lightweight material called Dyneema that offers a level of protection not previ-ously available.”

Aussie Pumps also recently launched the new TM range of submersible pumps from Tsurumi Pump that are designed for corrosive liquids including seawater.

“These pumps feature titanium sta-tor housing, and the stand and motor cap components are all manufactured from FRP resin moulded material,” Lor-enz explained.

“Some hire companies still want to rent out cheap Chinese pumps that they call ‘throw aways’. They think that if they get 3 hires out of them they have covered their cost and everything is OK.

“Tsurumi has a different attitude, with a strong focus on quality. The company’s quality principles and the roboticised fac-tory in Kyoto are symbolic of its commit-ment to quality.

“The Kyoto factory builds 1 mil-lion pumps a year and the company has just opened a new plant that does 400,000 pumps a year. The good news for rental companies is that Tsurumi prices are more than competitive with the Europeans and are rapidly closing on the Chinese throw away pumps as the volume increases.

“Tsurumi pumps are on rental in a wide range of applica-tions including dredging, mining, and concrete batch plants, as well as use in dealing with challenging situations such as corrosive liquids spills.”

Aussie Pumps has also continued the push to develop trash pumps suited to the rigours of construction sites and the mining industry with the launch of the new Site Boss and Mine Boss ranges.

Heavy duty solutionKerrick recently launched an up-dated version of the heavy duty HH3017H petrol powered cold water mobile pressure cleaner that is particularly suited to the hire and building industries.

Company Sales Manager, Steve Fos-kett, points out that the frame of this unit has been redesigned to more accurately reflect the demands of the hire industry, and that new features of the ‘H’ frame include a lifting bar, zinc plating and a high pressure hose reel mounting plate.

“The HH3017H, which is widely used in the hire industry, is powered by a Honda GX390 13HP petrol engine fitted to a 2:1 reduction gearbox that allows the pump to spin at 1800rpm instead of 3600rpm. Pneumatic 10 inch steel rimmed wheels

are also fitted, so it is easy to manoeuvre over rough terrain,” Foskett said.

“Important recent improve-ments in pressure cleaners include

increased functionality of frames and more efficient pumps as a result

of new designs for ceramic plungers, stainless steel poppet valves, white bronze piston guides and new brass cylinder heads. In addition, new ma-terials for high pressure pump seals, utilising resin impregnated fabric, give longer life and less downtime.”

Industry outlookPressure Right’s Simon Panther

says the industry has seen a sig-nificant downturn in the mining and

construction markets off the back of challenging economic conditions and the

global downturn. “Issues confronting the industry in Australia include re-

strained market confidence across a number of sectors, slow infrastructure investment, and the current situation with the Australian dollar.

“The civil construction and mining industries are coming off the back of a federal election where many infrastructure projects were on hold, and a lack of confidence within the housing industry has developers and their financiers sitting on the fence a little of late. On the other hand, utility company sales have been constant throughout this period as they strive to be more efficient and environmentally friendly.”

Milo Gajin at Spitwater believes that after a very average 2013 a more positive overall outlook is developing and the company is mildly optimistic that the next few years will be better than recent years.

However, he warns that internet shopping is a growing issue confronting the industry. “Anyone can set up a pressure cleaning business out of their home today. They can offer fantastic prices on poor quality equipment produced in China with engines that don’t meet our high anti-pollution standards.

“When the equipment breaks down there are no parts to fix it, no service people with any knowledge of the product, and warranties are non-existent. We need to be very careful how we approach the brave new world of internet shopping.

“As a traditional and well established company with a devel-oped network and a very strong product line, we need to embrace the new way of marketing but do it on our own terms: a little smarter and a little better than the rest.”

Kerrick’s Steve Foskett says the industry has been in recession or at least static mode due to a severe downturn in domestic and commercial building, and an issue confronting the industry is a distinct lack of large infrastructure building projects nationally.

“However, we are beginning to see signs of business confi-dence returning, particularly since the federal election. A likely future direction for the industry is that small independent hire companies will continue to disappear as the large powerful play-ers continue to aggressively expand.”

EXCLUSIVE INSIGHTS

Pressure cleaner developments bring environmental benefitsKärcher Australia MD Cameron Mole provides some industry insights.

What are the main changes within the industry in the last few years? There is a movement towards more sus-tainable and environmentally conscious high pressure cleaners, hence Kärcher’s development of the ECO mode for the HDS units, as well as the Home and Gar-den ecological range.

Significant technological improve-ments have also occurred with the devel-opment of more efficient, compact, tough-er, and manoeuvrable units as consumers seek better products. This is why Kärcher is continually developing and improving its high pressure cleaners as well as its oth-er power cleaning equipment such as dry vacuums, wet and dry vacuums, scrubber driers, sweepers, and steamers.

Our global corporate orientation revolves around what the customer wants and it is this that drives all our innovation and progress. The research and development team at our Head Office in Germany consists of over 550 engineers and technicians who are continu-ally working to improve existing products and creating new innovative units. Kärcher strives to make cleaning simple and easy.

What are the latest technologi-cal developments in pressure cleaners?Environmental protection through greater efficiency with the new ECO mode, which includes a service switch for controlling wa-ter hardness, turbo fan, precision detergent metering, optimized burner technology and a high-efficiency pump. Essentially, the ECO mode of our hot water high pressure (HDS) middle and upper class units gives users more sustainable and improved water saving options when cleaning.

There have also been design improve-ments in the service and repair area. In order to reduce the downtime of machines, easy service and repair of equipment is

particularly important in the hire and rental industry. Increasing the life of machines not only reduces financial costs but also reduces waste and environmental impact. Kärcher machines are built for life not for landfill.

Another development is in simplicity of use. In the service and rental industry especially, it is vital that the machines and products are easy to use. Pictorial user manuals help in the quick understanding of how to operate the machines.

How is the industry travelling in the current economic conditions? Business is travelling well as we focus on key sectors and tailoring our products and ranges to suit these markets including the hire and rental division.

Regardless of economic conditions, whether tough or buoyant, businesses still have to clean. It’s an essential component in the functioning of any business and is not something that can be compromised on. Businesses have to be kept clean and safe which not only promotes a positive work environment but is also in keeping with OH&S regulations.

In tougher economic times, businesses want to buy quality products and rely on reputable brands. They want equipment they invest in to perform as expected and required as well has having longevity.

What are some of the issues that are currently confronting the industry? There is continual emphasis on the impor-tance of OH&S considerations in making products safe to use and operate, both in the short and long term. Kärcher products always adhere to the highest international safety standards and all our products un-dergo rigorous testing and environmental compatibility checks before being produced en masse.

We have a focus on producing machines with reduced power consumption, reduced water usage and reduced chemical and

detergent usage, as well as products that are ergonomically designed and easy to operate.

What do you see as the likely future directions and challenges for the industry? We will continue to work closely with the diverse market segments that we sell to and operate with to constantly improve our prod-ucts and services. As the world’s leading sup-plier of cleaning equipment with the most comprehensive range available, at Kärcher we cannot and will not become complacent. We will continuously drive innovation, sales and service to meet the differing needs of each of our customer sectors. At Kärcher everything revolves around our customers.

What are the latest product releases from Kärcher? The latest release is the most powerful high pressure cleaner we have on offer. It’s industrial graded, heavy duty, and has a working pressure of 5075psi.

This machine has the power to clean even the most stubborn dirt away. The robust cage design protects the entire machine and makes it possible to load safely by crane. The cart principle for simple transport and nu-merous other features make this machine an ideal choice for professional use.

The lance holder and the integrated hose hook ensures accessories are handy and ready for use at the machine, and the hour meter always shows the exact operat-ing time of the pump.

All Professional machines have been rebranded from the traditional Kärcher yellow to anthracite (grey). This colour system is not simply a stylistic change but rather the result of our customer-orientat-ed approach and focus on innovative tech-nology. The new anthracite appearance is aimed at communicating professionalism, establishing a high grade perception, re-taining prime appearance in use, and pro-viding a differentiation from our domestic Home and Garden range.

EXCLUSIVE INSIGHTS

The Australian pumping scenePIA’s Executive Officer Marketing & Statistics, Keith Sanders, outlines the role of the organisation and the latest developments in the Australian pumping scene.

Pump Industry Aus-tralia is a not-for-prof-it organization which represents over 60 pump manufacturers,

distributors and pumpset assemblers in this country. This in-cludes suppliers of new, used, and hire equipment to meet a range of pump applications.

Australian conditions present special operating problems and good pump selection depends on a variety of factors to test the ingenuity of the supply chain. It is most important to get accurate operating data from pump users to ensure reliable and efficient equipment is supplied.

PIA has recognised it must play an active role in the market to create the best possible environment for cooperation be-tween our members and the end-user. Over recent years, PIA has adopted a clear business strategy to raise the profile of the capabilities here in Australia, and key initiatives include:• Increased membership by creating new membership catego-

ries for SME’s• Monitoring of pump import/export statistics to assess the

impact on Australian business based on the latest data from ABS

• Stronger interaction with Government at State & Federal level• Established contact with similar organisations, e.g. BPMA,

AIG, AMCA, BPMA, AIRAH, AWA• Increased involvement with the development of pump stand-

ards and liaison with Standards Australia• Improved communication with members through the web-

site, a quarterly newsletter and regular meetings • Organisation of educational seminars and exhibitions to

promote the Industry capability• Encouraging the development of industry specific training

programs to assist new recruits in the industryAt a practical level, many of these initiatives can be helpful

in assisting pump users to get the right pump for the job. The PIA President, Ron Astall, recently outlined the pro-

gram for PIA in 2014, which he said would focus on some key initiatives that include education and training, and strength-ening the links with young engineers and technicians to pro-vide meaningful careers in the industry.

Market research indicates that the demand for pumping equipment in Australia continues to grow and, while much of the manufactured product is imported, the need for skilled and experienced pump engineers remains. This can only be maintained if there are opportunities for the next genera-tion of pump people to learn and gain practical experience within the industry. Several PIA members offer training programs that are not ‘product specific’ and provide a sound basis for young pump engineers to progress in the industry.

In addition, PIA publishes two handbooks, which have be-come very important reference books for universities and other educational institutions. Both of these publications have recently been upgraded and these new editions include important additions to address energy efficiency and better system design. The publications are available for sale on the PIA website www.pumps.as.au

If there is a key message from PIA, it would be to say that a collaborative approach is usually the best way to reach a sensible solution. There is no one-size-fits-all answer for choosing the right pump for the job, but rest assured the Australian Pump Industry still has the capability to support clients who wish to invest in good quality equipment. This can be achieved using the latest technology available on the global pump market. It all boils down to communication and a meeting of minds. Given the opportunity, we can assure pump users that dealing with our members is one of the best ways to achieve this objective.

AUTUMN 2014 | HIRE & RENTAL AUSTRALASIA | 25

Page 26: Hire & Rental Australasia

Product Manager at Australian Pump In-dustries, Hamish Lorenz, says that as Aus-tralian requirements are unique, the com-pany sought guidance from Andy Kennard at Kennard Hire to develop a complete line of pressure cleaners designed specifically for the Australian rental market.

“Our company’s first wakeup call was to realise that the hire machine will always be subject to a wide range of neglect, abuse and over-work. The an-swer was laid out in the formula that has become the foundation of Australian Pump’s current range of pressure clean-ers,” Lorenz said. According to Lorenz, fundamental lessons from early years of working with the rental industry, and particularly Kennards Hire, included:• Build machines with a heavy duty gal-

vanised one piece welded frame that will stand up to the rigours of building

and construction site applications.• Build machines with top quality pumps

like Bertolini triplex pumps used by Australian Pumps, because second class triplex pumps will never work.

• The pumps need to be slow speed, operating at 1450 rpm, not the cheap high speed machines used by tradies and farmers.

• The machines need to be equipped with safety valves to protect both the operator and the machine from abuse.

• Suitable warning stickers that protect the hirer and his customer need to be on the machine.

• A complete training package on main-tenance and safety should to be pro-vided for hire company staff.

Lorenz points out that all of the above seems fundamental today but 20 years ago, when the company started

manufacturing, these requirements were not really recognised by the industry.

“The result of our research and de-velopment program was the evolution of Australian Pump’s Scud hire range with machines that clean faster, are more ef-ficient, and are safer and easier for the operator to use,” he explained.

“The company’s registered Scud de-sign has won awards in the USA and has sold all over the world with even the Japanese market falling in love with this unique Australian designed product.

“Andy Kennard, regarded by all as a true gentleman and a real leader in the hire and rental field, guided us to produce ma-chines with a degree of generosity of spirit and cooperation that was phenomenal.

“Today hundreds of hire companies across Australia work with Australian Pump and realise that the job of the hire industry is to rent machines, not repair them. Our fundamental philosophy is to build machines that don’t need to be fixed or repaired after every hire.”

Australian pump has developed a training module to train hire company staff on how to provide safety advice to customers and to maximise the profit-ability of every hire by value adding with labour saving devices.

The company’s product range in-cludes ‘car boot’ single phase pressure cleaners that it says are suitable for eve-rything from domestic to professional cleaning applications. Lorenz points out that these pumps are consistent with the original brief to build machines that don’t break down and require minimal maintenance and upkeep.

Hire industry machines are also available right up to 5,000 psi but the company cautions that moving into the bigger range of machines requires quite stringent control of operator safety, including guarantees regarding operator training.

theUpgraded Yanmar excavatorIn line with Yanmar Construction Equipment’s global plan of upgrading its current range of excavators, the company has again released an updated model superseding the Yanmar Vio80.

Tutt Bryant Equipment advises that new users can expect to see a significant increase in operating speed and overall performance thanks to the adoption of a new and powerful hydraulic pump. Excavating and dump loading speeds have

increased 21 percent compared to the previous model, and an ECO mode and auto-deceler-ation mode switch have been installed to reduce fuel costs and cut carbon emissions.

The new Yanmar Vio80-1 has increased cabin space and a sturdy ROPS cabin sitting on anti-vibration mounts restricts noise and sound pressure. Ser-vicing and maintenance of the machine is made easier through the installation of LCD action monitor that monitors all daily maintenance requirements.

Aussie Water WallAussie Pumps has released the new Water Wall to assist in fire fighting and personal protection. It creates a 300m2, 12-15m high wall of water jets from just one hose to provide a concentrated impact and prevent fires spreading by creating a firebreak.

It can also be used in an isolating capacity in applications like fuel and hazmat refilling work or decontamination as well as to deliver extinguishing and wetting agents, disinfectant and other chemicals. Jetting vapours and liquids can assist in absorption of hazardous heavy gases and chemicals can be introduced to the water mist to neutralise a dangerous environment.

The Water Wall consists of 20m of 75mm Duraflex hose with 25 high-grade steel interchangeable nozzles. Weight is 16kg, it is flexible enough for rough terrain, and sections can be locked together for extended coverage.

Counter pressure generated by the nozzles prevents twisting so the hose is self-stabilising. Water can be jetted horizontally or vertically and jets can be sealed off using dummy plugs.

In the workplace, the 360˚ turret rotation and zero tail swing allow for f lexible operation in tight locations, and the machine features a unique open centre knuckle riser design for improved visibility, compact dimensions and low-reach capability. Dual lifting cylinders provide superior comfort and stability while also maintaining true vertical rise which prevents drifting forward or backwards.

According to Rod Leech, MD of Skyreach, the latest addi-tion to the rental f leet is already in high demand with Sky-reach clients. “This is a very versatile knuckle boom lift which has very broad appeal. The platform height of 19.38m is right in the sweet spot demanded by maintenance and construction contractors,” he said.

Telecontrol vacuumKerrick has released a 27 litre capacity SP13 Dry Telecontrol Vacuum with semi-automatic filter shak-er for picking up very fine dust such as gyprock, brick, MDF and fibreboard.

With a 1500 watt single stage by-pass vac motor, it features a remote control for use with power/air tools. The operator can clean the filter at any time just by switching off the tool and letting the automatic filter cleaning start. The filter cartridge is rated at 1 mi-cron, thus having the ability to handle very fine dust.

Compact lighting towerCompanies requiring temporary lighting for a variety of open-air applications such as events, civil construction and open-cut min-ing now have access to an expanded range of lighting towers from Compressed Air and

Power (CAPS) Australia.Introduced in response to requests for a

smaller footprint machine, the compact Allmand Night Lite Pro II model provides safe working il-lumination with a combined light output of more than 440,000 lumens. “It is ideal for users in urban environments who want a full-featured, quality manufactured machine at a very competitive price,” said Richard Sweet, Marketing Manager Portable Products with CAPS. The Night Lite Pro II uses a Kubota diesel engine, with four 1,000 watt metal halide lamps on an adjustable head, with the bonus of two 10 amp, 240 volt auxiliary power outlets.

A six-section, hydraulically actuated automatic lift mechanism is used to elevate the lamp head to almost eight metres above the ground and can be raised to its full height in around 25 seconds. The unit features four

adjustable stabiliser outriggers enabling the unit to withstand wind gusts of up to 100 kph.

JLG lighting towerJLG has released the new METRO 4000 Lighting Tower following the company’s Voice of Customer research that indicated a need for a wider range of lighting towers. The project goal was a locally designed and manufactured lighting unit, with minimal sound impact that would provide adequate lighting and importantly still be cost effective.

“We recognise that our leadership in the industry depends on our ability to respond to the needs of cus-tomers, so we have to continually ask questions and challenge the way we do things in order to promote innovation and responsiveness in all that we do”, said Bob Mules, General Manager Australia and NZ.

The METRO 4000 has ISO 9001 accreditation, hydraulic mast up to 9m, 4 x 1000W metal halide lights and weighs just 1100kg, enabling easy one-person set-up. An exceptionally low noise output, as requested, makes it ideal for applications such as night works, civil work, car parks and event hire.

As with all JLG products, the METRO Lighting Tower is backed by the ground support network of field service techni-cians, parts supply and expert advice to ensure the unit will always deliver exceptional performance with minimal downtime for customers.

Ammann Rammax infrared technologyConplant’s newest addition to its hire and sales fleet, the Rammax 1575 articulated trench roller, sets new standards with the improved placement of dual receivers for its infrared remote control system. The specifically engineered new hood shapes are designed for smooth reception, con-stant connection and no dead spots.

The improvements combine the ‘line of sight’ control safety of existing Rammax infrared controls with the operational ben-efit of eliminating dead spots in situations such as when passing under a trench box.

Ammann distributor and compaction hire specialist Conplant has added a large number of Rammax 1575 trench rollers to its hire fleet and has also placed an ad-vanced order for Master Hire following the product release at Bauma Germany in April.

Conplant is committed to delivering higher safety standards to its customers, and one way of doing so is investing in this infrared remote control technology, according to Conplant National Sales Manager, Jim Harris. “We believe that the line of sight operational requirement provides significantly greater safety than radio remote control, where in-advertent and unsighted operation can occur,” he said.

“With multiple frequencies available and with line of sight operation ensuring that each remote control operates a single machine, it is possible to have multiple machines operating without interference on a site, which is a potential risk for ra-dio remote controls,” he added.

The advances aren’t just with the dual receivers: solar panels charge the battery

in the transmitter, eliminating the need for mains charging. The smooth curved shape of the hood is also designed to avoid interference with the line of sight from transmitter to receivers.

Makinex floor sawsThree new petrol and electric f loor saws have been released by Maki-

nex that allow

greater cut depth and outstanding du-rability. These saws provide a robust and easy-to-use multi-purpose solution for concrete cutting at a depth of up to 153mm (6 inches) using a 14 or 16 inch blade without needing to reconfigure the pully system. The petrol saw comes standard with a Honda GX270 series motor that has greater fuel efficiency, reduced emis-sions and quieter performance.

Makinex f loor saws are ideal for cutting concrete slabs, pavements, roads and footpaths, and crack chasing.

They provide improved precision as the revolutionary f lush cutting angle allows greater depths with less physical force, while the pneumatic shock absorber adjusts the depth to suit the application.

Floor saws improve accessibility in hard to reach places as they feature an adjustable rear axle enabling the blade to cut f lush against walls and curbs.

Other features include a depth indicator for accurate cut depth, guided sight for straighter cutting and adjustable handle bar height for ergonomic operation.

Okada hydraulic hammersTutt Bryant Equipment and Okada have an-nounced the introduction of Okada’s hydraulic hammer light range to Australia.

Okada’s latest models are the Okada 250, 400 and 800 and are designed with a new special alloy steel and advanced heat treat-ment system that has enhanced the hammers’ main component durability. These breakers are silenced, reducing noise pressure, and are fully equipped with a threaded port for attaching an automatic lubrication system, ensuring a long life for the hammers.

As the preferred hammer for use with Yanmar excavators, Tutt Bryant Equipment will package the hammers along with these excavators, providing users with a variety of solutions to suit their needs.

Dingo 950 Classic is BackThe Dingo that kick started the mini digger industry back

in the 90’s has been re-launched. Brendan McDonald, marketing manager for Dingo

Australia says the 950 was the machine of choice for the hire industry dur-

ing the 1990’s until the launch of the Dingo K9-3 model in 2002.

“The popular 950 was known for its toughness and reliability.

There are even some of these old 950 machines in hire yards today that are at

least 18 years old, which is testament to their quality and toughness,” he said.

“The new 950 Classic draws on the heritage of the old 950 and benefits from some of the technological advances in the modern Dingo All-Rounder and Contractor models. The biggest differ-ence that people will notice is that the 950 Classic has the Dingo AWD system in place of the old drive chains, and simplified op-erator controls with fewer levers than before.

“With fewer control levers the 950 Classic is the simplest machine to operate on the market, making it easier for new hirers to master the controls. The 950 Classic is available with the powerful Kohler 23hp petrol engine or the reliable Yanmar 20hp diesel engine and can be configured with a range of wheel options or over the tyre tracks.”

Crane maintenanceMajor crane service organisation, Kone-cranes, says future crane maintenance technologies are now arriving in Aus-tralia, focusing on real-time monitoring that enables owners to be pro-active in ensuring cost-effective practices, safety and traceability.

The company is currently introducing its most advanced family of remote service technologies, its TRUCONNECT® Remote Monitoring and Reporting service. Ben-efits for users include the ability to capture and bring to the users attention overloads, emergency stops and safety issues.

It also helps to optimise the right maintenance at the right time, based on real crane usage. Information is provided about how the crane is actually used and what is the estimated remaining service life of certain components so that crane maintenance can be planned and budg-eted with greater confidence.

Usage data is collected from the crane through a remote connection and com-piled into web views and customer reports that are available through a secure online customer portal. The portal offers easy access to the historical data of the crane involved, with important crane-specific key figures in real time.

Skyreach world rankingThe Brisbane based access equipment hire company Skyreach, has for the first time been ranked as the 50th biggest access hire company in the world.

Given that Skyreach operates exclusively on the east coast of Australia and then principally in the Queensland market, the ranking is a huge accolade. It is also testa-ment to the market penetration that Sky-reach has achieved in its chosen markets.

Skyreach is one of only three Austral-ian companies included in the top 50 rankings. The other Australian companies that are ranked are national operators and publicly listed companies. “This is a glow-ing endorsement of Skyreach and the team

of people who work at Skyreach,” said Managing Director, Rod Leech.

“Skyreach is a privately owned family business. To achieve this result when we are being compared to every other access company in the world is an achievement of which we are all very proud.”

The annual listing of the world market is undertaken by the UK based access in-dustry publisher, Access International.

JCB backhoe reaches 60Australian construction equipment dis-tributor JCB CEA is celebrating the 60th birthday of the iconic JCB backhoe loader that has helped to shape the world.

JCB founder Joseph Cyril Bamford manufactured the original JCB backhoe in 1953, creating for the first time a single machine with a front shovel and rear ex-cavator arm.

The concept developed rapidly, with the launch of the Hydra-Digger in 1956 and the heavier, more powerful JCB 4 in 1960. By the 1980s JCB equipped backhoe loaders with powershift transmissions, four-wheel drive, extending dipper arms, and multi-purpose front buckets, which brought increased performance and productivity for operators. Today, back-hoe loaders are the fourth most popular

machine in terms of global plant equip-ment sales, despite the evolution of new and competitive products over the past 60 years. JCB’s iconic backhoe is the biggest selling in the world – and has been for 13 consecutive years.

The company has developed its tech-nology and engineering expertise as well, now building its own market-leading range of diesel engines, its own transmis-sions and hydraulic systems. Even the cabs are designed, assembled and fabricated in-house, allowing JCB to control quality and design at every stage of the build process.

CAPS appointmentCAPS Australia recently appointed Steve Turton as the company’s Business Devel-opment Manager Power Generation for Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

With close to 20 years of experience in the power gener-ation industry, Tur-ton will be using his broad experience in a variety of mission critical applications to assist customers to maximise the use of their power generation equipment.

Steve’s previous achievements in secur-ing contracts for a variety of industries worldwide include data centres, hospitals, banks, airports, glasshouse crops, naval and commercial shipping as well as the exclusive mega-yacht market. Turton’s ap-pointment underline’s the company’s focus on enhancing its strong industry reputation and ensuring power generation specialists are available to assist individual customers at the local level throughout Australia.

“I’m pleased to welcome Steve to our power generation team at CAPS,” said Ares Siu, Product and Project Sales Manager, Power Generation. “He is an accomplished industry professional with a very strong technical expertise that will benefit our customers,” added Siu.

Compressor for Pakistan projectTo support a major natural gas project overseas, the manufacturing division of Compressed Air and Power Solutions (CAPS) Australia has manufactured and shipped a large packaged skid to help pro-vide energy to thousands of homes and businesses across Pakistan.

The compressor package was produced for the Makori GPF pro-ject in Pakistan. A packaged skid produced by CAPS is designed to be a self-contained system that can be delivered on site and ready to operate once all the external connections are secured.

The design, construction, testing and delivery of the project was a collaboration between the CAPS manufacturing teams in Perth and the client. Kumar Arik, a Perth-based Project Engineer with CAPS, had overall responsibility for the global assignment. Arik ensured that CAPS — the largest Australian-owned com-pressed air company in Australia — achieved excellent project management and build quality to supply a world class solution to an important international client.

The skid, with a length of nine metres and width of 2.2 metres, consisted of two Ingersoll Rand oil-free rotary screw compressors and two desiccant dryers. These major compressed air compo-nents were mounted with all associated filtration and ancillary equipment. The whole package delivered to the end customer had an overall mass of more than 10 tonnes.

Honda Summer Cuts campaignHonda Australia has announced great deals available to custom-ers as part of its Summer Cuts campaign. Other commer-cial grade brushcutters included in the Summer Cuts campaign are the UMK425 Loop Handle ($529*, RRP $549) and Bike Han-dle ($629*, RRP $669), and the UMK435 Loop Handle ($659*, RRP $689).

Honda has also dropped the prices of the HRU19K1 ($739*) and HRU19M1 ($779*) 19” mowers, announcing that both will be discounted by $60 off their RRP for the duration of the cam-paign. Also discounted are the HHB25 Blower ($499*, save $60) and the HHH25D Hedgecutter ($799*, save $50).

Directional drilling equipmentToro Australia will enter the nation’s horizontal directional drill-ing (HDD) machine market early in 2014 with a strong line of powerful machines and service support to capture market share.

The expansion into HDD follows the purchase in 2012 of Astec Underground Inc., a highly regarded manufacturer of directional drills, riding trenchers and other utility products, by The Toro Company of the USA, Toro Australia’s parent company.

The first Toro-branded mid-range HDD machines are scheduled to arrive in Australia in early 2014. They in-clude two directional drill and two riding trencher models,

typically used in the installation, repair and replacement of underground utility infrastructure.

Toro’s new Sales Manager, Directional Drilling/Trenching Equipment, Greg Ivanovic, said HDD machines were most fre-quently used by power distribution, telecommunications and utility companies as well as landscape and irrigation contractors.

“Since the acquisition, Toro has made technical improvements, updated the electronics and changed the branding and colour of the machines to the Toro red, but essentially maintained what was already an exceptional product,” he said.
