TV PERSONALITIES STRENGTH OF A WOMAN

By Hiram Maina

COVER STORY

Citizen TV Nipashe News anchor Kellen Beatrice Kanze

Dena is one of the most appreciat-ed Media personalities in the me-dia fraternity. The petite Kiswahili news anchor is tall, curvaceous and graceful; more importantly, she has a brilliant mind, a big heart and a strong soul

In an interview with Life and style magazine, Kanze Dena revealed a bit of her past and how she has managed to rise the ranks to whom she is today. Here are the 5 things you don’t know about Citizen TV Kanze Dena1. Kanze is a “born tao”“I was brought up in two different places because my mum worked in Mombasa and Nairobi. Most of the times I would go to school in Nairobi, and go to Mombasa for holidays.”“Even my shagz – Mazeras – is a cosmopolitan area. It is an area where Methodist Missionaries camped in colonial times. The place has

a railway line passing through it, and I saw Nairobi or Mombasa bound buses making their trip2. She is responsible – at least to those who know her personally could it be that she is the first born? I am

KELLEN BEATRICE KANZE DENA

“My brother was way older than me; we have nearly 12 years between us. He wasn’t given much preferential treatment; only the last born was accorded special attention – my

mother was very fair. playful and cunning one among my siblings. I remember when I was 12 and living

in Nairobi, my mother banned me from playing outside our house.

“There was this gap in our bathroom window. I used to climb stools and jump through it so that I could go play with my friends. One fateful day, our house help got tired of seeing me sneaking out. So, she locked the window and there wasn’t any other place I could use to get back in .besides the main entrance.”“Unfortunately, that time (5:30 pm) my mum was driving in and she questioned why I was out of the house – especially after she’d warned me against playing outside. She thoroughly beat me! I even said to her: ‘I doubt if you are my mum.’”Kanze and her mum eventually resolved their differences amicably: “Wesat down and agreed that during school holidays, I would travel to Mazeras so that I could play as much as I wanted.

. On getting a son and losing a mother“I joined the church believing God will surely help me. For a moment, everything seemed positive.”Storm clouds started to gather again when she realised that she was pregnant with her son, Ama-ni.“The sad memories of the death of my daughter reoccurred. Consequently, I was buried in deep thoughts. I wondered if I’d make a good mother, and if I’d get married afterwards. My relationship with my baby daddy wasn’t good at that time. The period was a turbulent one for me.”“My mother also fell sick around that time. She was diag-nosed with colon cancer and she needed financial support. I was unable to support her as just delivered Amani.”“Sadly mum passed away on August 8, 2007. It was a big blow! I wish she was live to see me read news on TV today. Like most mothers, Kanze ques-tions if she is the best parent for her kid. Her 10-year-old son, however, tells her

that she is the best mother on earth.“He tells me: “Mummy, you are the best mum ever!”“That statement melts my heart! When he wakes up, he comes to my room, greets me and inquires about my health. Amani then hugs me, and tells me he loves me. That has made

me feel strengthened.”

4. How she landed a job at KBC…Kanze Dena studied Joua radio presenter shortly after complet-ing her internship.“One day I was going to read 4pm radio news, and there was someone who did not show up to read the television

She was working as a radio pre-senter shortly after completing her internship.“One day I was going to read 4pm radio news, and there was someone who did not show up to read the televi-sion bulletin. In the process of rus hing to the radio studios, the

the TV news producer saw me and asked me to anchor the 4pm bulletin. They handed the radio bulletin to another person – DJ Ali.”“It was my first day on TV; I did not know matters

make up or grooming

or grooming for TV… Actually, I was kind of a tomboy.”“I read the news, and afterwards the boss called me. I had blundered a bit, but he told me that from that day henceforth I’d be reading 4pm news on TV. I was later promoted to reading 7pm bulletin alongside Badi Muhsin; I owe a lot to him.”“I remember the first time we went on air as a pair, my voice failed me – I had panicked. It came out with a shriek. Badi read the lead story; and when we took a commercial break, he told me: ‘Nini bana, nini wewe waniangusha? Soma! Mimi hapa wazungumza nami, hebu waeleze wakenya jinsi unavyonieleza…

imagine uko chumbani mwako wapiga gumzo.”“After that I gained confidence and he mentored me all the way; from 2003 to around 2006 at the KBC. I

joined Citizen TV in March 2007.”

5. Has she overcome her insecurities?“Even now, I don’t believe that I am beautiful. People send compliments, but the damage had been done – I had already told myself I am not beautiful. I don’t have the legs that other girls have; I don’t have the pos-ture that all the other beautiful girls have… I am definitely not that ultimate beauty! How-ever, I appreciate that people perceive me to be beautiful,” concludes Kanze.Despite her confession, Kanze is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women ever to grace local television.

at Riara UniversityHow did you get the role on the Tahidi High drama on citizen T.v?

It was just God !!!!waaaaaaa!!!! I saw God in it!!…it took me like two years to be called back i think my prayer and me being very aggressive really helped a lot because i never gave up for it. Always thank-ful to God and can’t forget to thank Catherine wamuyu nguku and many others including some of the cast in the show. What was the experience like of working with big people like miss morgan, mr kilunda, omosh and many others? It was quite an honor working with them considering they have been to the industry

long time before me. Though

why the turban? My turban is symbolic, its a denom-ination of the akurino many have talked by the way about it and i get a lot of questions concerning that matter but i would like to tell people outside there to know that when am on set my role or character doesn’t allow me to have the turban. Acting is all about being flexible, i get out of my self and i get into a character of another person that is portrayed in me, that’s why you will see that someone will act like a witch but now if you get to see the person in real life he or she is totally different from the character given so the same applies in my case!!

8 NOVEMBER 2016

i knew Omosh and mr kilunda even before i got a role in the show, indeed it was still an honorWhats your view on the current state of the movie industry with relation to Africa and what can be done to better improve it?hmm… i haven’t done or interact with other movie industries in whole Africa apart from kenya but i will relate to the daily mov-ie atmosphere anywhere.Africa movie industry is really growing, rapidly but it does not have the adequate cushioning it deserves. I think artist should join hands to come up with ideas and I’m sure

whats your average day like?Waking up at 5am when am on set because we shoot the whole day but when am not on set i wake up at 6am, small workout to keep fit, no breakfast. 8 am,i go to school to teach and that’s my day, but i have changed my schedule since i have resigned as a teacher so my day starts at 6 am, then do my stuff up to 9 am, then i attend my classes. When

am free i attend business meet-ing,have time with my family

and affairs, interviews etc. By 5pm i usually like being free so that i go do personal study, 7pm i always log in to social media and

interact with fans . 9pm i take

my super and around 10 to 11 pm i go to bed.How would you like to be remembered?A guy who was down to earth who changed lives of people outside

there in a good way though.

Whats is your vision perhaps five

years from now?Hmmm i do put everything in Gods hand so what i can say about that is i pray to have joined TV hosting or News anchoring department and to have featured

in more movies and to even own my own production.. Oh and to have started a mission of helping

orphans ….i really love kids and i would be very happy if get a chance to change many lives of the less fortunate

On that note, how old are you?How old do i look? i always told my students that am 37 years old when was teaching. The true of the matter is i am between 20-21.

How are you feeling that you are now a nominee at Xtreem Awards as the Best Actor of the Year 2016? And do you see yourself winning having that you are competing with one of the very known actors in kenya like Freddy who happens to be former student on your show?I put everthing to God..Im so happy and im saying thank you to everyone who made me get that nomination..haha wacha tufike kwa award kwanza..vote for me by Sending an SMS EC4 TO 21921oook.. so what can you tell people who want to become actors or any upcoming artist in general? That its you who is sitting on the talent you got!! it doesn’t matter how many years you will strug-gle to make it to the industry!! I always tell people it took me like five years to be where i am so what matter is all about your ac-tion …don’t just say you want to become an actor and you relax..no it doesn’t go that way!! know people and be more aggressive and above all put God first in all those and you will surely make it!!

Are you seeing anyone cur-rently?i will give you an answer i give most people… i plead the fifth (meaning no comment) but my blue tooth is on
