The MaceThe mace was originally an emblem of authority in ancient Rome and a prerogative of royalty in the Middle Ages. The right to possess and to exhibit a mace was gradually extended to cities, towns, universities, and other corporate bodies.
Hiram College’s mace is 62 inches overall, and the staff is made of black walnut. The College seal is cast in bronze and forms the base of the abstract lantern which surrounds the top of the sculp-ture. It symbolizes the motto of the College, “fiat lux,” or “let there be light.” A bronze plate along the staff carries the names of the presidents of Hiram College and their years of service since the founding in 1850. The mace was commissioned by the Women’s Council for Hiram College and was presented in May 1985. It was designed and created by the late Ellen Jagow.
A Brief Explanation of Academic CostumeAcademic dress has its origins in the great English and European universities of the Middle Ages. American colonial universities based their regalia on the British system. Modern American aca-demic dress was standardized in 1895 when an intercollegiate commission defined the system now followed by most institutions of higher learning.
Presidential Medal. As part of the planning for the inauguration of Hiram’s 21st president, the Hiram College Board of Trustees commissioned the creation of a ceremonial medal to be worn by the president of the College. The medal project was funded by board member Donald Batisky, M.D. ’83. The front of the medal features the seal of Hiram College. The back replicates the medallion presented to inductees of Hiram’s most prestigious honorary, the Garfield Society. Gingko leaves surround the medal to represent the 100-year old gingko tree that stands near Gerstacker Science Hall. Six small medallions with images of campus buildings and scenes hang from the handcrafted chain. The medal belongs to the Office of the President and will be worn by the office holder at public ceremonies.
The Garfield Society Medallion. Hiram College Trustees and cabinet members, as well as fac-ulty members who have attained the rank of professor, are entitled to wear bronze medallions on scarlet ribbons as fellows of the Garfield Society of Hiram College. The society was named for James A. Garfield, an alumnus of the College — then known as the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute — and the College’s second president. Garfield later served as the 20th president of the United States. The society honors individuals who have demonstrated continuing leadership and dedication to the welfare of humanity, their nation, and their communities.
The Gown. Gowns vary according to the degree of the wearer. It is usually black for all degrees, al-though some universities have adopted colored gowns; for example, graduates of Yale University and the University of Michigan wear blue gowns. Gowns for the bachelor’s degree have pointed sleeves; master’s degree gowns have long closed sleeves with a slit for the arm; the doctoral gown has round open sleeves. For the bachelor’s or master’s degree, the gown has no trimmings. For the doctor’s degree, it is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves, often in the color distinctive of the institution or discipline to which the degree pertains.
The Cap. The origin of the mortarboard is unclear. The mortarboard is standard wear for all aca-demic ranks, although some universities allow special caps for their doctors, such as the round black velvet tam of Cornell University, or the eight-pointed black velvet beret with maroon head-band of the University of Chicago.
Eclectic Scholar. Designated on the diploma as in cursu honorum, an Eclectic Scholar is a student who has spent 4 years following a course of honors classes and has met high academic standards throughout the Hiram career. Criteria include maintaining a GPA of 3.3 or above, completion of the honors program course requirements, and engagement in the campus community as dem-onstrated through active membership and taking on leadership roles in campus organizations. An Eclectic Scholar wears a red cord to signify this distinction.
The Hood. Although so altered for ceremonial use that it now hardly resembles its antecedent, the modern hood, the most distinctive feature of American academic dress, is descended from the shoulder cape with attached hood worn by most men and women in the poorly heated buildings of the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. Hoods are not worn by recipients of bachelor’s
degrees. The color of the facing of the hood (under the wearer’s chin) denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the colors of the lining of the hood designate the university or col-lege that granted the degree. The degrees represented by some of the colors you will see in Hiram’s academic procession are philosophy (dark blue), humanities (white), science (golden yellow), music (pink), fine arts (brown), education (light blue), and social science (cream).
Sigma Alpha Pi: The National Society of Leadership and Success. Platinum and black honor stoles are worn by graduates who have successfully completed the requirements for a selective four-year national leadership program, Sigma Alpha Pi. In addition to recognition for outstand-ing national academic and co-curricular achievement, members of Hiram College’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Pi have acquired certification in the areas of leadership training and personal development.
Phi Beta Kappa. The pink and blue honor cords may be worn by graduates who were elected into Mu of Ohio, the Hiram chapter of this national honor society for scholarly excellence in undergraduate studies in the liberal arts and sciences. The criteria for the inductees to Chapter Mu include a GPA of 3.7 or above, foreign language study and mathematics study along with a high concentration in liberal arts courses.
International Sashes and Kente Cloth. International sashes represent the countries of ori-gin for international students. The international sash celebrates diversity and Hiram College’s commitment to the international program. In the tradition of Africa’s rich visual art forms, Kente cloth is worn as a formal representation of African history, philosophy, ethics, oral litera-ture, spiritual values, inclusive social ideas and political thought. Originally, Kente was reserved for royalty and limited to special and sacred functions. Today, the beautiful woven cloth is worn by many as a symbol of global unity, pride of culture, African heritage and to signify personal and collective achievement. Throughout the academic world, students, faculty and staff consider Kente an important part of the academic regalia.
Sigma Theta Tau International—Nursing Honors Society. The honor cords in pastel pink and lavender signify induction into Sigma Theta Tau International, nursing’s honor society. Its membership comes from a global nursing community of nurse leaders and has more than 475 chapters in 90 countries. Its vision is “to create a global community of nurses who lead in using knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve the health of the world’s people.” Membership is selective and is extended to baccalaureate and graduate nursing stu-dents who have demonstrated excellence in academic performance and scholarship and to nurse leaders who have exhibited exceptional achievements in nursing.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree was first awarded at Hiram College in 2011. Specially designed uniform pins, to be worn on nurses’ uniforms, were awarded at a separate ceremony. In addition, B.S.N. recipients graduating with honors will wear “honors cords” with their caps and gowns at the ceremony.
Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society. As the only honor society for col-lege and university students of political science in the United States, Pi Sigma Alpha recognizes and promotes high academic achievement in the field of political science. Graduating members wear honor cords of interwoven red, white and black.
