OUR HIPS DON’T LIE:
INTENTIONAL OUTCOMES &
HIGH IMPACT PRACTICES (HIPS)
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Participants will be able to…
• Describe the eight characteristics of High-Impact Educational
Practices
• Analyze programs on their campus that could be a High Impact
Practice
• Construct ideas surrounding ways to improve High Impact Practices
on their campus
• Generate practical knowledge about how to take experiences they
already offer students, and infuse them with the eight HIP
characteristics to create a more robust and impactful student
experience
• Apply research to make decisions about the investment of time and
resources into further developing High Impact Practices on their
campuses

POSITIVE EFFECTS ON
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
• High Impact Practices (HIPs) create positive effects on student
engagement.
• Kuh (2008) says that, as educators, our role is to make it possible for
every student to participate in at least two HIPs during college.
“High Impact Practices are curricular and co-curricular
structures that tend to draw upon high-quality pedagogies
and practices in pursuit of 21st Century learning outcomes;
they are teaching and learning practices that have been
widely tested and have shown to be beneficial for college
students..,[toward] increased rates of retention and student
engagement” (Kuh, 2008)
