The three-year-old, who became the third filly in history to take the GI Belmont S., was scheduled to work yesterday, but trainer Todd Pletcher opted to gallop her instead. She will now likely be readied for the Aug. 18 GI Alabama S. at Saratoga. AHer temperature was 101, which is not high, but a little beyond the normal range,@ Pletcher said. AWe are going to take the conservative approach. She hasn=t quite seemed her- self the last couple of days. We won=t breeze her without her being 100 percent. Our plan now is to point for the Alabama and the Breed- ers= Cup.@ He added, AI am disappointed that we didn=t get to run her [in the CCAO] because a lot of people were looking forward to seeing her at Belmont Park.@ “LIGHT” GUIDED TOWARDS GOODWOOD Henry Cecil yesterday revealed that the Niarchos Family=s Light Shift (Kingmambo) could run in the Aug. 4 G1 Nassau S. at Goodwood. The G1 Epsom Oaks winner was reported to be none the worse after her defeat by Peeping Fawn in Sunday=s G1 Irish Oaks, and Cecil remarked that a rematch could be on the cards in the 10-furlong Nassau. AWhat we do now depends on the ground and how she is, but I=d be happy to take on Peeping Fawn again on decent ground,@ he told the Racing Post. AOn the sort of ground we had at The Curragh, we wouldn=t be able to beat her, but on decent ground I think it would be close. She=s not a machine, so I can=t say for definite where she will run next, but if she=s okay to run...she will go for the Nassau. Siegel, seated alongside Ric Waldman, somewhat reluctantly answered Dion=s bid of $340,000 with one of her own at $345,000, but declined to up the ante after Dion responded to the auctioneer=s plea for $350,000. The Quebec native admitted that he was beyond his com- fort zone. AIt was a little more expensive than I thought it would be,@ Dion said. AWe thought we=d stop at $200,000, we ended up at $350,000. Finley, Lakin to Do More Dreaming... Bloodstock agent Buzz Chace chose to stand duringthe bulk of the bidding on hip 193. But, as the heated

battle was approachingits end, he apparentlywent missing, much tothe surprise of the auc-tioneers. The panicwas only momentary,as Chace had strolleddown the aisle to takea seat. A few minuteslater, he lobbed hisfinal bid of $300,000and walked out a win-

ner on a flashy bay colt by Lion Heart--V V S Flawless(Deputy Minister). The Valentine=s Day foal, a Maryland-bred, was consigned to the sale by Ronald and CarolynGreen=s Green Willow Farms. Chace was acting onbehalf of L & F Stables, a new pinhooking venturewhose principals are Lewis Lakin and Terry Finley. Thepartnership between the two horsemen began auspi-ciously enough--Finley was about to let GISW DreamRush go to a higher bidder at the 2006 OBSFEB sale, but Lakin encouraged him to launch another salvo.ADuring the bidding, Lewis approached Buzz just as thehammer was about to fall,@ Finley explained. AWe weregoing to be the underbidder. It was our good fortunethat he decided to come and sit down.@ Asked whetherhe was apprehensive about entering the pinhookingbusiness during a time when the practice has provedincreasingly challenging, Finley was philosophical. AAcouple of years ago, it seemed like everyone jumped inand wanted to pinhook,@ he said. ABut you can never gowrong when you buy good-quality horses. The objec-tive is to sell these horses at the two-year-old sales, butwe=re both of the opinion that you can=t go wrong withgood prospects. We both run, so if there=s a hiccupsomewhere along the line we have something of asafety net.@ He added that there are currently about sixother partners involved, and that their goal is to Abuy20 to 25 pinhooking prospects@ in the A$100,000 to$300,000 range.@ The horses are likely to be consignedto the juvenile sales by David Scanlon, David McKathanand Nick de Meric. He added, AI think the business isgood and I think it=s an interesting time to enter thepinhooking game. I think it hasn=t been quite as toughto buy. I think the vast majority of people would tellyou a year ago it was a little stronger, a little higher.@

Full of Hope... Agent Dennis Yokum, bidding on behalf of ownerErnie Moody=s Mercedes Stables, was extended to$200,000 for a colt from the second crop by Full Man-date (A.P. Indy). Consigned to the sale by Bill andAlison Murphy=s Ballinswood agency, hip 99 was pro-duced by Our Pleasure Jet (West by West) and wasbred in Florida by SGV Thoroughbreds and BulldogRacing. AHe=s a good horse,@ Bill Murphy offered. AHeshowed himself very well from the day he came overhere and every time he came out, he acted like it washis first time. We showed him over 100 times [Sunday].He=s just a big, beautiful horse. If he had Street Cry (Ire)or Johannesburg after his name, he=d be bringing amillion [dollars]--he=s that kind of an individual.Mercedes Stable bought him and you=d like to see thosepeople do well, too.@ Murphy said his pupil was ofsound mind and body. AHe had a lot of leg and a lot ofsize underneath him, but he had the body to go with it,@he explained. AHe=s got a very good mind. We had a lotof good players on him. When you get a good horse, you get good people looking at him.@

City Slicker... A few years back, Tiger Ridge, a Storm Cat half-brother to A.P. Indy who was winless in five careerstarts and stood at Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, boasted several well-sold yearlings during the New SireShowcase. Though represented by far fewer in number,City Place is off to a promising start as a sire, despitethe fact he never visited the racetrack. The six-year-oldstallion, also a son of Storm Cat, is out of the outstand-ing racemare Glitter Woman (Glitterman), making him ahalf-brother to the recent GI Suburban H. winner Politi-cal Force. City Place was the sire of two youngstersduring yesterday=s session. While one was a scratch, his lone remaining offspring, hip 227, did him proud, selling to Stephanie Preston for $80,000, some 20times his 2005 stud fee of $4,000. City Place stoodthe 2007 breeding season at Hartley/DeRenzo in Ocalafor $4,000.

Kimmel Likes Candy... Trainer and veterinarian John Kimmel is on a crusadeof sorts. Having grown increasingly wary of the toll thetwo-year-olds in training sales take on its participants,

Kimmel is buyingpinhooking pros-pects on behalf ofDrew Rayman=sZephyr Stable. Theconditioner went to$235,000 for a fillyfrom the first cropof the track recordsetting Candy Ride(Arg) from the con-signment of Hill >n=Dale Sales Agency. The bay is the first

foal from Pelicus Affair (Pentelicus), a half-sister toMGSW Pine Dance and to SW Village Dancer, the damof MSW and MGSP The Happy Hopper. Kimmel saidshe jumped through all the hoops. AShe was a filly thatwe thought was physically appealing, and she obvi-ously passed the technical information and scope andX-rays,@ he remarked. The day=s co-top selling filly, shewill go to go into the resale group, which will be a bitdifferent than in the past. Kimmel explained that ZephyrStable will put their horses through a less strenuousregimen before resale. AThe horses will not be breezingfast and basically will be going without sticks and willprobably not even be timed,@ he stated. AWe=re trying tosell a horse that doesn=t have to go to the farm for 60days of rehab [after being purchased]. The horses willbe sound and will be able to go right from the two-year-old sale into the barn, and they=re going to have a goodmind and be ready to go forward. They=re not going tohave to go into the shop for repair. That=s the conceptwe=re trying to promote. I want to make a difference.@Rayman is the CEO and chief creative officer for acompany called i33 Communications, an online design, develoment and marketing firm. He maintains a racingstable called Rayzin= the Bar Stable and was recentlyrepresented by Caress S. winner Brushed Bayou. Earlierin the session, Kimmel went to $150,000 for a fillyfrom the first crop of Kentucky Derby hero SmartyJones. Consigned by Perrone Sales Ltd., hip 84 is outof Must Be a Lady, a full sister to MSW Warleigh andGSW Must Be War. This is also the extended femalefamily of the outstanding turf mare Citronnade.

Another Topper for Taylor Made?... For everything they=ve accomplished as a perennialleading consignor, Taylor Made Sales Agency had neversold a $1-million horse at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky. Thatall changed last year with the $1.2 million colt by For-estry, and the agency is hopeful of topping the sale asecond consecutive year, even if the seven-figure markis not eclipsed. Hip 518 is the lone male representativein the catalogue by Taylor Made=s outstanding sire Un-bridled=s Song. A gray colt, like his father, the Feb. 16foal is a son of SP Blushing Ogygian (Ogygian), makinghim a full brother to Habiboo, a multiple graded stakesplaced winner of $190,190. AI think that pedigree isjust going to keep getting better,@ Duncan Taylor com-mented. AThis is a really nice horse. Unbridled=s Songhas done really well when Blushing Groom has been onthe bottom side of the pedigree and Habiboo has al-ready shown she can run. There=s also a Street Cry (Ire)out of the mare called Street Boss that worked in :59 2/5 the other day. This is a well-balanced colt and Ithink it=s a real opportunity for somebody.@ Added MarkTaylor, AHe=s one of those Unbridled=s Songs that looksgreat standing there, but when he moves, he just glidesacross the ground.@ Swifty Farms went to $425,000for Blushing Ogygian carrying this foal in utero at the2005 Keeneland November sale. Taylor Made also hashigh hopes for hip 502. By top sire Distorted Humor, the bay is out of Arianna=s Passion (Unbridled=s Song), astakes winner of $204,110. AThis filly has a full sisterthat brought $475,000 at the two-year-old sales that=sin training with Jeff Mullins,@ Mark Taylor said. AHe=sreally high on her. The second dam, Impassion, has abeautiful Unbridled=s Song filly that=s going to sell inSeptember. If you had to draw up what you want whenyou breed to Distorted Humor, this is what you=d want. She=s got a big, sloping shoulder, a huge hip and agreat walk. She=s got the whole package.@

Making Their Point... By any standards, the 2007 season has been nothingshort of spectacular for West Point Thoroughbreds, theNew Jersey-based racing syndicate headed by Terry

Finley. The year be-gan on a high notewhen the relativelyunknown AwesomeGem took January=sGII San FernandoBreeders= Cup S. atSanta Anita. FlashyBull became the orga-nization=s first Grade Iwinner with his mildupset in the StephenFoster H. at Churchill

Downs, and Dream Rush followed suit a few weekslater, storming home to take the GI Prioress S. atBelmont Park. That effort followed High Finance=s suc-cess in the GII Tom Fool BC H. on Independence Day.It=s no wonder Finley is in good spirits these days.AWe=re obviously very happy with the success,@ he saidyesterday at Fasig-Tipton. AWe=renot really doing anything differ-ently than we did before. It=s avery competitive environmentand I don=t want to say it wasour turn, but certainly thingsseem like they=re aligning.@ Finleystated that Flashy Bull would gonext in the GI Whitney H. andDream Rush in the GI Test S.,while High Finance is beingpointed to the GI Forego H. Awesome Gem will make hisnext start in the GI Pacific Clas-sic Aug. 19. Finley is also lookingdown the road to World Thor-oughbred Championships day, tobe held at Monmouth Park, a stone=s throw fromFinley=s home base. AWe hope we=ll have at least somerepresentation at the Breeders= Cup,@ he commented.AWe=ll just enjoy the ride. You talk to some of the olderguys in the business who have been through the upsand downs and one thing they tell you is to just enjoyit. Those Grade Is don=t come around a whole lot andwhen they do they generate the memories of your life--that=s a phrase that I=ve latched onto.@ One of WestPoint=s first >big= horses was Seattle Fitz (Arg), whonow stands at Buck Pond Farm and is represented thisweek at the sales. AI was pleasantly surprised to seefour of them in the New Sire Showcase,@ Finley said.AActually, three of them made the short list. They alllook like they have good bone and are intelligenthorses. We like to think he=s got a shot.@

His Place in the Shade... During last year=s second session, John Mayer=sNursery Place agency sold a colt by Pulpit for a session-topping $760,000, and the consignor is hoping historyrepeats when he sends hip 430 into the ring this after-noon. Also by the Claiborne stallion, the chestnut fillywas produced by Probable Storm (Tabasco Cat), whorecently became the dam of a stakes winner whenCajun Conquest (Came Home) took the July 14 Seekingthe Gold S. at Louisiana Downs. AI=ve had several peo-ple come by and tell me that she reminded them ofRags to Riches,@ Mayer explained. AShe acts like a coltsometimes. She can be a little tough and she=s not apushover.@ Mayer teamed with Robert Hagopian toacquire Probable Storm for $100,000 at the 2004Keeneland November sale and resold the Aptitude coltshe was carrying for $75,000 at Keeneland Septemberlast year. Unfortunately, Hagopian, at one time a part-owner of Spendthrift Farm, died about two months agoand Mayer confirmed that the Pulpit filly would beselling without reserve. A[Hagopian] loved his familyand, hopefully, this will be a nice way to start takingcare of them,@ Mayer said. Contemplating his goodfortune, he added, AObviously Pulpit has been verygood to me--is that an understatement? They say [lastyear=s] colt [now named Swath] is doing really well and, hopefully, she=ll fall right in behind him.@

Day One By the Numbers... Given that the New Sire Showcase comprised onlythe first 212 horses during last year=s sale, statisticalcomparisons between the opening sessions are difficultand somewhat hazy. The Showcase continues with thefirst 33 horses on offer today, and it will be more usefulto compare this year=s entire New Sire Showcase withlast year=s. With that in mind, the numbers were downversus last year. Gross receipts fell by 5.5 percent, while the average was off by 17.8 percent. There were90 horses which failed to meet their reserves yester-day, a high 34 percent, while last year=s RNA rate camein at 27 percent. AThere=s no doubt that the older sireshelped day one last year,@ said Fasig-Tipton PresidentWalt Robertson. AThere wasn=t a person here whohoped this year wouldn=t be better than it was lastyear, but I don=t feel bad about today=s average. I can=tsay that I am surprised, because this is kind of the wayit=s been at the upper-level sales this spring. Is it agauge of too many horses? Maybe. Is it a gauge of theoverall market? Probably.@ Boyd Browning, executivevice president and COO of Fasig-Tipton, added hisperspective. AIt=s probably safe to say there=s been nodramatic growth in the buyer base,@ Browning said.AGiven that, if you have more supply, you could have adecrease in overall numbers. I=d say there=s a sense ofrelief--the market is still relatively strong. If we=ve lost alittle bit from last year, we haven=t lost a huge chunkand that bodes well for the rest of the year.@

It was pretty much business as usual in Europe=s fourGroup 1 contests last week, with champion sireDanehill striking twice through Simply Perfect in theFalmouth S. and Peeping Fawn in the Irish Oaks, whileDanehill=s son Dansili supplied the winner of theJuddmonte Grand Prix de Paris for the second succes-sive year. The early stages of the Grand Prix were cer-tainly controversial, but there was no escaping thepromise of Zambezi Sun=s display, which suggestedthat this very progressive colt has the potential to fol-low in Rail Link=s Arc-winning footsteps. The only stal-lion to break the Danehill stranglehold was the interest-ing Sakhee, whose first crop provided the July Cuphero Sakhee=s Secret.Insights cont. p8

Peeping Fawn and Simply Perfect are among a totalof three Group 1 winners in Danehill=s final Irish crop, which continues a rich vein of form dating back toDanehill=s 1998 crop. In his last seven Irish crops, foaled between 1998 and 2004, Danehill sired a mag-nificent total of 27 Group 1 winners, including suchstars as Banks Hill, Mozart, Westerner, Rock of Gibral-tar, Intercontinental, North Light, Dylan Thomas andGeorge Washington. It wasn=t always like that, though. The start of Danehill=s purple patch coincided with hisreturn from a year in Japan, with his fee raised toIR25,000gns in 1997. The rise reflected his feat ofhaving taken the title of champion sire of two-year-oldsin 1995 and 1996. Danehill=s fee had gone in the other direction earlier inhis Northern Hemisphere career, during a period offalling values. After starting out at IR20,000gns in1991, his fee quickly fell to IR12,500gns and then toIR9,000gns in his third and fourth seasons. This makesit fair to compare Danehill=s early years with those ofDansili, who stood his first season at ,8,000, his sec-ond at ,10,000 and his third and fourth at ,12,500. The facts are that Danehill sired four Group 1 winnersin his first four crops, which totalled around 288 foals.Zambezi Sun follows Price Tag, Rail Link and Passageof Time as the fourth Group 1 winner from Dansili=sfirst three crops, which--neatly enough--number 287foals. Dansili has only around 60 two-year-olds thisyear, from that often difficult fourth year, but this crophas already made a bright start. His daughter Provisowas named a J “TDN Rising Star” J when sheeased home four lengths clear in a newcomers= race atDeauville last Wednesday, with her victory being fol-lowed a few hours later by a seven-length success foranother Juddmonte debutante, Famous Name, in asix-furlong maiden. Needless to say, success on this scale has preparedthe ground for even richer harvests in the future forDansili. Even with his fee raised from ,12,500 to,30,000, Dansili was in tremendous demand frombreeders this year.

He attracted more than 60 stakes winners, including30 group winners, and his book also included the damsof the recent Prix du Jockey-Club winners Dalakhani,Blue Canari and Darsi. The dam of Danehill=sDerby-winning son North Light was another visitor, aswas the dam of that excellent mare Soviet Song. Juddmonte continued to support Dansili strongly, asit has done from the start. However, only seven of the30 group-winning visitors this year are owned byJuddmonte, which shows the extent to which outsidebreeders have now embraced Dansili. This year=s Juddmonte mares included NebraskaTornado (G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix du Moulin),Quiff (G1 Yorkshire Oaks), Dance Routine (G2 Prix deRoyallieu), Daring Miss (G2 Grand Prix de Deauville) andPhantom Wind (a Group 3-winning daughter of Ryafan). The dams of the Group 1 winners Reefscape andPowerscourt were other Juddmonte visitors, togetherwith Verbose, already dam of Dansili=s Group 3 winnerThousand Words, and Mooring, a stakes-winninghalf-sister to Rail Link=s dam. While Juddmonte has bred nine of Dansili=s stakeswinners, there was some sensitivity earlier this yearabout a comment made in a British magazine. AI=veheard from some quarters,@ the writer reported, Athatthe success of Dansili is due to the fact that thebroodmare barn at Juddmonte is carrying the horse.@ Although Juddmonte has enthusiastically supportedDansili, it wouldn=t have made sense to send lots of themost highly qualified mares to an unproven horsestanding at ,8,000, ,10,000 or even ,12,500. Thefacts of the matter are that none of Dansili=s four Group 1 winners is out of a mare which earned blacktype. Rail Link=s dam Docklands did her winning in theFrench Provinces, while Zambezi Sun=s dam Imbabalagained her only success at Fontainebleau. Passage ofTime=s dam Clepsydra had a Timeform rating of only 78and Tarocchi, the dam of Price Tag, was a useful win-ner who fell short of stakes class. Incidentally, thedams of all four Group 1 winners are all in foal toDansili once again.

Of Juddmonte=s other Dansili stakes winners, EarlyMarch and Quenched are out of unexceptional winners, while Daring Diva and ThousandWords are out of Listed-placed mares.Only Home Affairs has astakes-winning dam, so what mightDansili achieve now that he hasearned much greater opportunities? Zambezi Sun=s dam Imbabala is adaughter of the exceptional Zafonicand had the attraction of being a de-scendant of Peace, one ofJuddmonte=s most successful founda-tion mares. Interruption, anotherZafonic mare from the Peace family, isthe dam of Much Faster, one of thespeediest juvenile fillies in France in2003, when she won the G2 Prix Rob-ert Papin and was second in the G1Prix Morny. Peace is one of the most widely rep-resented mares in the Juddmonte studbook, through the descendants of her daughters DeStael, Balabina and Intermission. De Stael, best knownas the dam of the Eclipse Award- winning Wandesta, isthe second dam of Dansili=s talented daughterCantabria. Cantabria=s dam also produced the veryspeedy Deportivo. Zambezi Sun=s third dam, Intermission, earned aTimeform rating of 117 in winning three of her sixstarts, including the prestigious Cambridgeshire H. Although Intermission produced nothing better than aGrade III winner--the Sadler=s Wells filly Interim--she isthe dam of several successful broodmares.

One of them, Zambezi Sun=s second dam Interval, was third in the 1000 Guineas and is the second damof Continent, a winner of two of Europe=s Group 1

sprints in 2002. Imbabala has more than justified herretention, as Zambezi Sun is her sec-ond group winner from her first fourfoals. His predecessor Kalabar was aGroup 2 winner over 13 miles. Inter-estingly, Kalabar was by Kahyasi, thesire of Dansili=s astonishing dam Hasili. Zambezi Sun isn=t the only reminderthat the versatile Peace family is stillvery much alive. Interim, the Sadler=sWells filly mentioned above, is thedam of Mizzen Mast=s two-year-oldson Midships, who made an impres-sive winning debut in a hot maiden inJune. Also, Proviso--the Dansili fillywho gained J “TDN Rising Star” Jstatus last week--is out of Binche, agreat granddaughter of Peace, so therest of this year could be an exciting

time for the Dansili--Peace alliance.

Everything’s Coming Up Violettes... It has been a career year for trainer Rick Violette Jr.Earlier this month, Violettesent out Dream Rush to winthe GI Prioress S. and HighFinance to take the GII TomFool BC H., and he knockedoff his biggest purse everwhen Summer Doldrums(Street Cry {Ire}) capturedthe $750,000 GIII ColonialTurf Cup S. in June. With 4 1/2 months still left on thecalendar, Violette=s runnershave accumulated more than $2.5 million in earnings, surpassing his personal best. Summer Doldrums can push the bankroll past the $3 million mark with a big race in the Virginia Derby.Violette is optimistic that the colt will run back to hisgame head victory over Strike a Deal (Smart Strike) inthe Colonial Turf Cup.

AHe ran a great race last time, but we had to go toPlan C,@ the native New Englander said. AI thought he=dbe on the pace or right behind it, but it didn=t developthat way.@ Rated off moderate fractions by jockey Jose Lezcano,Summer Doldrums saved ground early, worked his wayto the outside in the stretch and outbattled Strike aDeal to the wire. AHe had a terrific trip and he got a good ride,@ Violettesaid. A[Jose] rode him quite confidently. He bided histime and at the head of the lane he found the seams heneeded. Once he did, he was pretty resolute. [Strike aDeal] came to him and he had an eighth of a mile to getby him, but he couldn=t.@ Summer Doldrums, a $150,000 KEESEP yearling, showed ability on the main track, taking the WhirlawayS. and finishing third in the GIII Gotham S. and fourth inthe GI Wood Memorial S. But the decision was made togive him a chance on the grass. AAs the competition got tougher, he was found want-ing a little bit [on the dirt],@ Violette explained. AThatwas the time to find out if he liked the turf, before theColonial Turf Cup and the Virginia Derby. We didn=twant to miss those races and leave all that money onthe table. And Street Cry has license to sire horses thatrun on pretty much anything.@ Owned by Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence,Summer Doldrums has four wins from 10 starts, withearnings of $631,716.
