Preface

It is an honour for me to assume charge of Hindustan Shipyard

Limited as the Chairman and Managing Director wef 06 Jan 16. It

Shall be my utmost endeavour to repose trust and faith in our

customers by building and refitting ships in a time bound and cost

effective manner while ensuring Quality.

My Officers, Staff and Workman will spare no efforts in ensuring that

‘Team HSL’ while accomplishing current shipyard targets shall strive

to work towards meeting future challenges through continuous

improvement and optimization.

In the 75th year of glorious service, to the shipbuilding and shiprepair

industry, we would like to assure our fellow citizens that HSL would

leave no stone unturned in our quest towards improving economic

status of the company and indeed the city of Visakhapatnam and the

nation at large.

Inception

Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, strategically located on the east coast of

India, is the nation’s premier shipbuilding organisation which was set

up in the year 1941 by the Scindia Steam Navigation Company. The

Shipyard was partially taken over by Govt. of India in 1952, and

subsequently became a fully owned Govt of India undertaking in Jul

1961. Presently, this is the largest public sector shipyard in the

country.

Ship construction at

HSL commenced in

1946. Keel for the

first two 8000 tonne

DWT steam ships

“JALAUSHA” and

“JALAPRABHA” were

laid on 22 June 1946

and 22 August 1946

respectively.

The first vessel “JALAUSHA” was launched on

14 March 1948 by Prime Minster Sri. Pandit

Jawaharlal Nehru. The second ship

“JALAPRABHA” was launched on 20

November 1948 by Sri. Sardar Vallabhai

Patel, the then Deputy Prime Minister.

HSL is the first swadeshi shipyard of

historical importance, ergonomically laid out

for unidirectional material flow and spread

over an area of about 500000sq.mtrs.

Ship Building Division

Ever since building the first ship “JALA

USHA”, HSL has come a long way in

building a range of ships numbering one

hundred and seventy seven of various

types and sizes. The range varies from

conventional Bulk Carriers to General

Cargo ships, offshore supply vessels and

Patrol vessels as well as highly

sophisticated Drill Ships covering

Defence and Oil sectors apart from

conventional merchant shipping.

Thanks to its valued and varied

clientele, HSL has achieved phenomenal

growth and versatility in building ships

of different types.

SAGAR BHUSHAN, a highly sophisticated and complex drill ship built for the first time in India for ONGC is an example of HSL’s capability in high-tech products. HSL has also constructed and delivered Bulk Carriers upto 53000 t DWT diamond series Bulk Carriers for M/s Good Earth Maritime Ltd.

Ship Building - Infrastructure

HSL yard is spread over an

area of about 500000 Sq-

Mtrs. Workshops and

facilities are systematically

planned and functionally laid

out to ensure unidirectional

flow of material. The steel

processing facilities consists

of a stock yard to hold about

30,000 tonnes of steel,

modern plate section

treatment plant, NC gas

cutting machines, heavy duty

presses, self-elevating trucks

capable of handling blocks

upto 200 tonnes and large.

Prefabrication shops with

overhead travelling cranes of

adequate capacity. The hull

construction facilities include

a modern covered building

dock and three slip ways.

Cutting, welding and

assembly of steel to any

specification is handled with

care and accuracy by skilled operators who are continuously trained to upgrade

their skills. The long self-contained outfitting quay is equipped with adequate

services and facilities.

Versatile machinery and labour saving devices in Hull Outfitting, Engineering and Electrical shops minimise outfitting cycle time.

Quality

Hindustan Shipyard's is well known for its tradition of quality first. For its

outstanding performance in various projects, the company received

certificate of accreditation from Lloyds Register of Shipping / Indian

Register of Shipping for quality assurance in shipbuilding and

ship repairs and also from Department of Science and Technology,

Government of India for industrial radiography. This accreditation

signifies the high standards in Total Quality Management achieved by the yard.

The recognition is a result of HSL's commitment to implement rigorous

quality control measures drawn on scientific and systematic lines.

HSL is the first shipyard to be awarded ISO 9001 certificate from LRQA and is

now certified as ISO 9001 - 2008 Company from IRQS.

Design, Automation and R & D

HSL’s constantly endeavour to minimise

shipbuilding cycle time to be

comparable to international standards

by streamlining various functional

domains including design, procurement,

planning and production.

A remarkable achievement in the field

of ship design is the development of “

HS-Standard Flexible Design” acclaimed

for its excellent hydrodynamic characteristics by HSVA ship model testing

establishment at Hamburg, Germany. Seven 27,000 DWT Bulk carriers of this

design were built for various customers. HSL developed its own design for about

40 vessels of various types.

HSL’s design capability embraces wide spectrum of general and special purpose vessels like medium size Bulk Carriers upto 80,000 DWT, Product tankers, Container vessels, Dredgers, Passenger vessels, Survey vessels, Inshore Patrol Vessels, Tugs of various capabilities etc. HSL’s strength lies in its continuous efforts in enriching the area of Design and

Production not only to meet the requisite standards but also to ensure Customer

Satisfaction. Extensive use of Aveva Marine Software for CAD-CAM ensures the

integration of Design and Production. The Design capability is augmented with

work stations exclusively for piping, Electrical and other Outfitting requirements &

DSIR/GOI recognised Research & Development Unit keep HSL in the forefront.

Ship Repair Division

The Dry Dock is an important adjunct

to the Shipyard for undertaking

repairs of ships. The Wet Basin with

two arms serve as an additional

facility for afloat repairs. It is capable

of handling vessels upto 70,000 DWT.

The Dry Dock, the biggest dock in the

east coast of India, has accomplished

intricate repair jobs on a variety of

naval ships including submarines

merchant ships and oil rigs. Foreign and Indian Flag ships totalling over 1950

Nos. have undergone hull and engine repairs.

Submarine Division

HSL's association with submarine repairs started with refitting of two Egyptian

submarines in 1971. Short Refits & Emergency Docking of IN submarines have

been undertaken number of times in the mid 70s.

An exclusive and dedicated Submarine Division has been established in 1997 to

undertake medium repairs and modernisation of submarines of Indian Navy.

HSL has entered into a new area of repairs of conventional submarine in a big

way bagging the order for Medium Repair of INS VAGLI, an F-class submarine of

Indian Navy, which was successfully retrofitted and delivered. This submarine

had participated in the President's Fleet Review held at Visakhapatnam on 12

Feb 2006. The yard was also nominated by the Ministry of Defence to undertake

the Medium Repair-cum- Modernisation of 877 EKM Submarine "INS

Sindhukirti" which was successfully completed in 2015, meeting stringent quality

standards to the full satisfaction of Indian Navy.

HSL has already embarked on construction of submarines for Indian Navy.
