26 NOVEMBER - 3 DECEMBER 2018Compassion is excited to offer you the opportunity to be involved in this amazing Compassion Field Experience to Indonesia.

This Field Experience will give you the chance to experience Compassion’s work firsthand and meet our incredible workers in the developing world. This is your opportunity to see how Compassion works and to judge for yourself if it truly does transform the lives of children living in poverty.

OVERVIEW AND PURPOSEThis Compassion Field Experience is to Indonesia. We plan to arrive in Indonesia on 26 November 2018 and depart on 3 December 2018. However, these dates may change slightly depending on the availability of flights.

The principal purpose of the Field Experience is to see how Compassion works with local churches to provide critical, ongoing support from the womb to the workforce to children, families and communities through four core programs:

• Mums and Babies

• Child Sponsorship Program

• Leadership Development Program

• Critical Interventions

During this Field Experience, you will experience firsthand the everyday issues and challenges confronting those living in poverty. You will be able to talk directly to parents, children, church leaders and our dedicated local staff to gain a better understanding of poverty, its forms and its solutions. Australians support Critical Interventions by giving to Critical Needs.

You will be challenged and inspired—perhaps even bewildered or angered—as well as changed by what you see, hear and experience, and by the relationships you will form.

As every Field Experience is different, the programs you will have the opportunity to see in action in Indonesia will vary depending on the region you are visiting and a variety of other factors. You may visit mothers and their infants in our Mums and Babies survival projects and see firsthand the many ways in which children benefit from our Child Sponsorship Program. You may have the opportunity to meet with, and be inspired by, the students as they share their hopes and dreams for their nation. Finally, you may see the incredible work of our Critical Interventions, from providing fresh water wells and sanitation, to potentially life-saving medical interventions that help to protect children from deadly diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS.

FAST FACTS• Indonesia is made up of 17,508 islands and has 129 active volcanoes.

• One of the world’s most suscpetible nations to natural disasters; volcanic eruptions, flooding, landslides and tsunamis are continual threats in Indonesia.

• Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population.

• Over one-third of children suffer from moderate to severe growth stunting, an often irreversible condition caused by chronic malnutrition during early childhood.

RELIGIONIndonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population, with 87.2 per cent of Indonesians following the Islamic faith; 7 per cent is Christian; 2.9 per cent is Roman Catholic; 1.7 per cent is Hindu and 1.3 per cent is currently unspecified.

There has been an increase in the numerical and political strength of Islam in recent years. While most Indonesian Muslims are considered moderate, there is an increasing hard-line minority who advocate violence against Western targets.

CURRENT ISSUESIndonesia has high urban growth, which strains the capacity of major cities to provide housing and social services. There also remains a lack of adequate infrastructure and resources, with the conservation of Indonesia’s forests and peat lands a current struggle.

While poverty and low living standards persist throughout Indonesia, particularly in rural areas, there has been progress in recent years. A poverty task force, the National Team for Accelerating Poverty Reduction, was set up in July 2010. This task force provides policy guidance and coordination of social protection and poverty reduction programs throughout Indonesia.

Lying near the intersection of shifting tectonic plates, many parts of Indonesia are at high risk of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Hundreds of thousands of families have been displaced and severely affected by natural disasters in recent years. Indonesia suffered the greatest number of casualties during the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, with an estimated 168,000 people killed and more than half a million left homeless. The country was also impacted by the 2009 earthquake that hit Padang, killing over 1000 people and destroying or damaging almost 300,000 homes. Unfortunately, these crises have led to a dramatic increase in the number of children living on the streets. Many of these children suffer abuse through sexual exploitation and child trafficking.

Several terrorist attacks targeted Indonesia in the early 2000s, with the bombing of a Bali nightclub in 2002, resulting in the deaths of 202 people, and three consecutive attacks on Bali tourist districts in 2005.

COMPASSION IN INDONESIACompassion International began working in Indonesia in 1968. A second office was opened in East Indonesia in 2005. Currently, over 136,300 children participate in Compassion’s Child Sponsorship Program activities at 567 child development centres across Indonesia. Compassion Australia assists more than 17,000 of these children. Compassion’s Mums and Babies survival projects and various Critical Interventions also operate throughout the country. Our goal is to reach out to Indonesian children; helping to provide them with the opportunity to rise above their circumstances and become all God has created them to be.
