Manager’s note

What does ART mean to HILLSBORO?The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the new HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works.

Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture CouncilThe Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager.The HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community.

Hillsboro Public Art ProgramPublic art is a powerful tool for meeting the goals of Hillsboro’s community plans. Memorable public places strengthen our community. Often referred to as “third places,” they are the places that are neither home nor work. These social spaces attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, inform us about the history and peoples of our place and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity.

Year round, the Walters Gallery showcases a diverse selection of artwork by both established and emerging artists. Opening receptions for the artists and general public are held on the first Tuesday of each month and provide an opportunity to meet the artist(s) and foster exciting dialogues about art and creativity. Two Solo Shows: Photography & PaintingMay 6–June 24

These two solo exhibits share one thing in common: an exploration of how form and color capture the essence of a place or person. Whether it’s sweeping fields or swathes of sky in Stuart Allen Levy’s landscape photography, or the abstracted ribbons of color in Edyta Salak’s bold acrylic compositions, these two exhibits each highlight the exceptional talent and unique perspectives of local artists who render the world through the lens of their craft.

The Instructor ExhibitJuly 1–29

A teaching-artist is a powerful hybrid, described famously as a “practicing professional artist with the complementary skills, curiosities and sensibilities of an educator.” By creating art themselves and passing on the practice to future generations, teaching-artists contribute to the transformation and elevation of arts and culture as a whole. The annual Instructor Exhibit celebrates the artwork of the brilliant teaching-artists who enrich the lives of this community through the many classes offered at the Walters year-round. From the breathtaking totems of ceramics instructor Victoria Shaw to the virtuosic wildlife scenes of acrylic painter Gerald Sticka, there is plenty to astound and inspire in this talent-packed exhibit!

Underneath It All: Collage by Amy MintonyeAugust 5 – September 30

Through collage and acrylics, artist Amy Mintonye weaves found images into scenes of totemic power, exploring the inner and outer forces that bear upon daily existence. From floods, gravity, and other natural forces, to systemic forces such as class inequality and alienation, Mintonye’s layered compositions unearth the patterns of struggle and resilience that define the human character. Uplifting in their beauty and symbolic nuance, these are works that remind us of art’s power to articulate the human drama and spirit.

One on One with Oregon’s Sixth Poet Laureatewith Paulann PetersenTuesday, July 15 | 7 pm

Join us in the Walters theatre for an intimate talk about all things Poetry with Paulann Petersen, Oregon’s sixth Poet Laureate. Prepare to be inspired as Petersen discusses poignant experiences from her recent tenure as the Poet Laureate, and reads selected poems from her own works. Petersen has six full-length books of poetry, most recently Understory from Lost Horse Press. She was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University, and received the 2006 Holbrook Award from Oregon Literary Arts. Bring your notebook in case inspiration strikes, and come early for a seat!

Beyond Human? Science, Technology, and the Future of Human Nature with Professor Prakash ChenjeriTuesday, June 17 7 pm

Throughout history, religious scholars and philosophers have debated what makes humans unique in the animal kingdom. More recently, evolutionary biologists and cognitive scientists have contributed new thinking to our ideas about human nature. Has the essence of what it is to be human shifted over time? How might science and technology—such as recent rapid advances in bioengineering and other fields— challenge and reshape our understanding of what it means to be human? Prakash Chenjeri, an associate professor of philosophy at Southern Oregon University, leads participants in a thoughtful conversation about these questions and more. This program is made possible by the generous support of Oregon Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

The author of five full-length poetry collections and six chapbooks, the prolific Paulann Petersen completed her second term as Oregon’s sixth Poet Laureate in April. The Oregon Poet Laureate is a specially-appointed figurehead who “fosters the art of poetry, encourages literacy and learning, addresses central issues relating to humanities and heritage, and reflects on public life in Oregon.”

In this interview with Walters staff member Stephanie Rose Adams, Paulann shares some of her views and experiences as a poet and former poet laureate.

SA: What is it about poetry that led you to devote so much of yourself to this art form?

PP: Poetry speaks the language of us at our best. We encounter many kinds of language in our world. We are spoken to as consumers, as potential buyers, potential voters. We encounter, we create the language of chit-chat, the language of conversation, much of it—thankfully—cordial enough.

We encounter the language of information, technical language, official language, some of it all too often officious. We are most often spoken to as receptors of data, receivers of fact.

But poetry speaks to us in the language of vision, sympathy, empathy, affect, the language of insight.

Is there any wonder why we hunger—especially amid the commotion, the distractions of our workaday lives—why we hunger for the sound, the sight of poetry? Any wonder why we seek out a poem to read, to recite at a wedding, a funeral, a birthday, at any dedication ceremony?

Who doesn’t want to be spoken to as a soulful, creative, responsive creature? Who doesn’t want to be addressed as an entity deeply, profoundly human and humane?

SA: You’ve written and spoken about how poetry can lead us to make new discoveries, awaken, and reinvent ourselves. How does poetry manage such feats of magic, in your opinion?

PP: A poem is a vehicle for transformation. Reading a poem, we are transformed. If the poem is whole, resonant, we are a different person from the one who hadn’t yet encountered the poem. The poem leaves us changed.

This is true of writing poems, too. We write to create ourselves, to discover moment to moment to moment who we are, who we are becoming. The act of writing the poem re-creates the writer.

SA: What advice would you offer to someone who has never before read a poem?

PP: Poetry is, by its very nature, condensed. Compression is one of the hallmarks of poetry. So take poetry at an easy pace. Give yourself the sweet luxury of reading it slowly.

Poetry is a creature of sound. It’s meant to be heard. The tradition of poetry is an oral tradition. So hear the words, their rhythms, as you read a poem. Or better yet, read the poem aloud. Lend your voice to the poem for a minute or two and hear it in its full embodiment.

As the East Indian population of Hillsboro continues to grow, interest in exploring and celebrating Indian culture does as well. The rich diversity of Indian classical dance forms leaps into the spotlight at Mithranjali, a dance festival debuting this summer that will be will be held on 4 Saturdays in July and August at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. Created by cultural non-profit Mai3m (pronounced My-threem, meaning friendship in Sanskrit), Mithranjali will showcase the richness of styles and traditions of classical dance forms from India through its lineup of solo performances. All of the performances will be free to the public.

“The festival will provide opportunities to dancers to demonstrate the entire breadth of their individual skills as well as the technical aspect of the dance from footwork to facial expressions, and their individual stamina,” said Festival Director, Meera Kanagal. It will also provide the festival goers with a glimpse into the powerful storytelling in classical Indian dance.

Mithranjali kicks off on July 26 with a lecture and demonstration

for those unfamiliar with Indian classical dance forms. The lecture will also explore the aesthetics, sensibilities, issues and perspectives of Indian classical dance as well as exciting new dimensions in Indian-American contexts. Three dancers will put all of these elements into action with solo performances to close the event.

On three following Saturdays—August 2, 23, and 30—solo performances by four dancers will be featured on each day. Festival performers include: Poorna Sridharan & Alisha Menon (Lecture-demonstration), Ankitha Krishnamurthy, Brianna Adhikari, Mira Rush, Raveena Manivannan, Saachi Patel, Sagarika Ramachandran, Shaila Ramachandran, Priyanka Mathur, Shivani Prakki, Vipanchi Mungara, Ritwika Petluri, Harini Sachidanand, Rupali Sarathy, Roshni Sarathy and Prashanthi Harathi.

The Hillsboro Community Youth ChoirIn the 9th grade, singing midway through a three-part harmony choir piece, young Cindy Uecker had a revelation. “Something

clicked,” she says, remembering the experience. “I was lucky enough to come from an orchestra family and already had many musical influences, but in that moment I really understood the profound power in using my body as a musical instrument, and to be in harmony with a group of singers . . . I still to this day remember how very empowering it was.” Cindy Uecker is now the Artistic Director of the Hillsboro Community Youth Choir (HCYC), a nonprofit

choir that serves youth in grades K-12 throughout Washington County. HCYC began nine years ago as a supplement to public school music programs struggling with budget cuts and limited resources.

In the spirit of creative collaboration, the HCYC reached out to the Walters Cultural Art Center in 2013 to join forces on a summer camp for emerging—or even just curious—young singers of all experience levels. Not only did this collaborative effort bring new audiences to both organizations, but the camp program created a richer music education experience through these combined efforts.

This August the HCYC is returning to the Walters with their “HCYC Choir Camp” as a way to bring together young singers

to make music and continue to offer them the chance to experience the revelatory moment of singing that Cindy Uecker so passionately recalls from the 9th grade.

“Music is so important to us as human beings,” says Uecker. “It not only elevates the spirit of the individual, it elevates the entire community.” Uecker recognizes that teaching art is about so much more than mere technique. “Developing our emotional intelligence,” says Uecker, “is one of the primary benefits; a secondary benefit is exercising a fuller use of your brain, honing your skills and [in the case of music] shaping your whole body as an instrument.” Uecker believes the arts teach confidence and a stronger sense of self, encourage creative experimentation and expression, develop coordination and memory, and the list goes on.

“The thing is,” says Uecker, “choir is so much about belonging . . . about finding your voice and finding a community for that voice to become a vital part of. So many kids these days don’t have a sense of belonging to a community . . . but choir is instant community and it makes everyone feel welcome. And it’s a transformative community.”

Portland TAIKOThis past February the Walters joined forces with Portland TAIKO—an award-winning Asian-American drumming ensemble—to offer a beginning workshop in the dynamic and evolving art form that is Taiko. Students from the ages of 16—70 filled the Walters Theatre for the its first-ever Taiko drumming workshop. The response was overwhelming enthusiasm. “It was so energizing,” says workshop participant Robin Sola. “I could feel the power of the drum through my whole body. And I left feeling like I had just learned so much—I had a new drumming language, new skills, and had an amazing time.”

Taiko, which means drum in Japanese, has its origins in a variety of Japanese drumming traditions, from religious ceremonies to community theater—but it’s by no means a traditionally static art form. “Innovation is one of the core elements of Portland TAIKO,” says PT’s Artistic Director and Taiko instructor Michelle Fuji, “and I was drawn to the opportunity to create new voices for the art form with this company.”

Fuji goes on to say, “Being in Hillsboro opens up the Taiko conversation to a new community, and we are excited to hear their Taiko voice. Portland TAIKO loves to collaborate. It opens up new entry points to investigate our art form.”

Like choir, Taiko drumming is an art form with benefits that reach far beyond mere technique. Fuji explains how “our drum demands us to use our full bodies and commitment to make the sound. When a single sound from one individual can come together with many others, it is a magical experience. Even a simple drumroll could provide courage to a shy student . . . or provide

an academically challenged student the opportunity to succeed equally with his or her peers . . . and "wiggly" students get a controlled outlet for their energies.”

Portland TAIKO returns this summer not only with a Saturday workshop for adults and teens, but also with a week-long camp for kids ages 10-13.

It’s no accident that organizations like Hillsboro Community Youth Choir

and Portland TAIKO are developing a following of students and audiences in Hillsboro and Washington County. They both invoke the power of their respective art forms in thoughtful and innovative ways and seek to nurture vibrant and engaging arts education opportunities. Whether through drumming or singing, hitting the “right” note this summer means students of all ages creating great music as well as meaningful experiences in their community.

Meet Cassie Greer

“Acting is telling your own truth. As a teacher, what’s most exciting—and profound—is being able to witness and facilitate those moments of breakthrough and self-empowerment.” —Cassie Greer

“I remember my first big role on the stage,” recounts professional actress and instructor Cassie Greer. “It was high school, opening night, and I was playing Titania from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I came out onto the stage, beneath the bright lights, completely overwhelmed and blank . . . and then suddenly, I was her. Titania. I was

there, utterly present . . . I had become a living part of a story much larger than myself.”

Teaching acting to children, Greer believes, is about much more than getting kids to memorize lines or play a part convincingly. For this teaching artist, it’s about helping young people investigate and explore their own imaginations in transforming way. “As a teacher I focus on honesty,” she adds. “Acting is telling your own truth. And as a teacher, what’s most exciting—and profound—is being able to witness and facilitate those moments of breakthrough and self-empowerment in your students.” Greer’s graduate-level training, advanced certifications, and dedication make her serious about her craft, but not necessarily serious in her approach as an instructor. On any given day in the sunlit Walters theater (her classroom), she can be found waving her arms and jumping up and down with a group of laughing, smiling children. “I’m pretty sure I look completely silly 99% of the time, but it’s so important to have that freedom—to just express and let the imagination take precedence over appearance.”

Greer asserts that “acting teaches you what you are capable of.” As a teaching artist who is very much active in her own acting career, Greer’s talents can be seen on display on stages throughout the region. A company member of Hillsboro’s Bag&Baggage Productions, Cassie has garnered accolades for her powerful, stirring performances in plays such as The Tempest, Of Mice and Men, Julius Caesar, and most recently, The Great Gatsby.

“People here are refreshingly open and receptive to new ways of thinking. Our audiences [at Bag&Baggage] have shown us that there is a hunger and respect for this type of work . . . it’s energizing to know that we are playing such an important role in this community.”

The community aspect of theater is something that Greer deeply appreciates. “I feel so lucky to have been given these opportunities to learn more about my community and connect to them in all these different ways. As an actor I connect with people in one way, and another way as a teacher . . . Teaching at the Walters has been inspiring—there is just such a range of backgrounds and cultural influences coming through these doors,” she says. “I’m loving the way we can all connect, through acting, in this beautiful space.”

Tuesday MarketplaceFor the foodies and lovers of crafts out there, our town is blessed with the Tuesday Marketplace, downtown (E Main and 2nd) from 5 - 8:30 pm. There is great food and produce, but the fun continues with the outdoor concert series which happens each week on two stages: “Who’s on 3rd?” and the main stage located on the Courthouse lawn. Featured are some of the best local bands around with musicians who live and work right here in Hillsboro (plus a few favorites from Portland). Don’t forget to bring a blanket or low beach chairs for maximum comfort and enjoy the evening of free, quality music.

Pix on the PlazaFor those who love Disney, Pixar and Columbia Pictures animated films, you have a real treat this summer. Hillsboro Water presents another year of Pix on the Plaza every Friday at 7 pm from June 13 – July 11 (except July 4) at the Civic Center Plaza. Features will include: Frozen, Monsters University, Despicable Me 2 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. The films will begin at dusk, though you might want to get there before the film starts to get comfortable for the evening’s festivities. No alcohol or pets are allowed at this family-friendly event.

Celebrate HillsboroThe community of Hillsboro has quite a bit to be proud of and a great way to celebrate is by joining the festivities at the 10th Annual Celebrate Hillsboro on Saturday, July 19 from 9 am to 4 pm. Be sure to visit the Arts Village hosted by the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council on the Courthouse lawn, featuring hands-on arts and crafts, entertainment by the popular Amazama comedy, dancing and juggling act and an opportunity for participants to try their own hands at juggling. For those who love body art, free henna tattoos will be provided by henna artist Sushmida Poddar. Also, the arts don’t stop at the edge of the Arts Village. You can experience the Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre on the Walters Cultural Arts Center lawn, listen to Boka Marimba, Key of Dreams and a number of other performances on multiple music stages and more at this free, family-friendly gathering.

Bag&Baggage’s Outdoor ShakespeareNot to be missed is the ever unique Bag&Baggage’s outdoor Shakespeare production at the Civic Center Plaza, 150 E Main Street. This year enjoy Love’s Labour’s Lost, an original adaptation of Shakespeare’s romantic classic by Scott Palmer, with a uniquely Italian Frederico-Fellini feel. Keep your eye out for the stunning Italian-couture costumes by Melissa Heller. This play will be starring some of B&B’s most recognizable outdoor performers—riding in on Vespas! The performance runs from July 24 - Aug 9 at 7:30 pm. The cost is $18.

Masque Alfresco’s “The Would-Be Gentleman”Masque Alfresco is a non-profit theatre organization with a mission to provide affordable, accessible Commedia Dell'arte style theatre to the community. What does this mean? Basically, it means a whole lot of laughs and fun for you and your family. With colorful period costumes, slapstick and broad physical comedy, current jokes and social references, this summer’s performance of The Would-Be Gentleman by French Playwright Molieré, will be considered time well spent. The dates for this free event are Aug 22-24 at 6:30 pm at the Civic Center Plaza, 150 E Main Street.

Public art brings a moment of wonder to unexpected places. For several years, a decommissioned fountain sat empty in downtown Hillsboro across the street from the Civic Center as this property awaited redevelopment. In the words of Cristina Caravaca, Cultural Arts Program Manager, the former fountain was “the world’s biggest ashtray.” Seeing an opportunity to enliven the space, the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council put out a call for its first public art installation. The public art panel chose Dancing Chairs by local artist James Schmidt. The whimsical, animated chair sculptures transformed the dreary spot into a handsome civic space.

After four years as a temporary “rental,” Dancing Chairs will be welcomed into the permanent collection of the City and make its permanent home at the 53rd Avenue Park. An already popular location with sports fields, picnic tables, splash pad and play structure, this park will be an even greater hub of activity for the city if the Community

The existing two chairs will be joined by two more to form a playful parade. According to the artist, Dancing Chairs appear to move with an animated and joyful spirit. A chair is, after all, perhaps the closest abstraction to our own body. We ascribe names to chair parts as we have names of own body extensions: arms, legs, back and seat. These particular sculptures breathe life into this commonest of daily objects that surround our lives. They appear to want to jump down off their pedestal and follow you down the street.”

Sculptor James Schmidt is a resident of North Plains and has been an artist for over 40 years. Many will recognize the bus shelter he created for the Hillsboro Main Library. His humorous Seahorse, an inverted canoe with a saddle, was a popular attraction last year on the lawn of the Walters Cultural Arts Center and now catches the eye of transit riders at Lombard Plaza in Beaverton.

Get ready to pack your paintbrushes, pastels, pens, printmaking supplies or whatever you need to make art outdoors—Hillsboro Plein Air Plus is coming on September 12-13, 2014. Plein Air, a term that originates from the French en plein air which translates as “in the open,” was made popular by French and American Impressionist painters of the late 1800s. It describes paintings that have been created outdoors instead of in a studio.

At the 8th Annual Hillsboro Plein Air we’re adding a “Plus” to signal to artists of all media and genre that we are interested in challenging them to create art outside, en plein air. Visual artist and Hillsboro Art and Culture Council member Christine Martell explains, “We really want to build the sense of community for individual artists in Hillsboro. We know that there are a lot of artists out there that aren’t working in the traditional plein air style and we want to include them in our major event.” She went on to encourage abstract, mosaic, mixed media, and collage artists, as well anyone who can find a way to make their art outdoors in two days, to join the competition.

Hillsboro Plein Air has long been recognized as an event that embraces both highly accomplished Plein Air artists and emerging artists just trying their hand at painting outdoors. During the competition, artists create pieces from start to finish, outdoors at the park or in downtown Hillsboro where the public is always welcome to watch the art come to life. According to artist Yer Za Vue the

opportunity to, “paint with really nice folks,” is one of the reasons she keeps coming back. Plus, she says “that the staff and volunteers in Hillsboro always make the artists feel so welcome.”

Hillsboro’s Plein Air event is fairly unique in its inclusion of figurative tableaux–with two to three models striking a pose for two hours for the artists to capture. This year, for the first time the event will include a contemporary, as well as a historically-themed tableau. The tableaux are made possible through a collaboration with Hillsboro Artists Regional Theatre providing actors as models, and Lavenders’ Green Historic Clothing providing the historical costumes.

Additional information, including prizes, schedule of events, changes in categories and judging, as well as information on the public reception, People’s Choice voting and exhibit will be added to our website throughout the summer.
