Library News

Students have been working hard this month to learn how different sections of the Library are organized with a focus on the Non-fiction

section. Students are learning where their favorite subjects are located and keeping in mind that any Library they go to - Middle School, High

School, college, and public - will be set up the same way.

We have added a comfy reading chair to the Library! Students are able to earn a seat each Library class by maintaining good Library etiquette. We have had a steady stream of winners enjoying a comfy seat since the start

of the school year. Awesome job, Hillcrest readers!

Please mark your calendars for our Scholastic Book Fair next month! It will be taking place November 12th-16th with our Family Night event

taking place on Thursday, November 15th. More details to come as we get closer to the Enchanted Forest Book Fair!

Kindergarten News

Kindergarten has been hard at work! We have been working hard learning our letters and numbers. We’ve read lots of good books and

we love having Morning Meeting each day. One of the most fun things we have done so far is celebrating Color Week. Each day we

wore a different color as a class. Some of our classmates brought in Show and Tell of different colored items. We are looking forward to

more fun and learning!

rules, “Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.” We are learning to talk, share, listen, and take turns during our day at school. We are aiming to be

good citizens of Hillcrest!

Second Grade News

Headed to the Farm! We have been learning in Social Studies about types of communities

around the world. We have centered our learning on urban, suburban, and rural communities. On our upcoming field trip, we are headed into the rural community to an actual working farm! We will learn

about the farm on a hayride, pick a pumpkin from the vine, and learn about their bees and how important their pollination is to the life on

the farm. In preparation for our field trip to Sugartown Farm, we learned about pumpkins! Here are some pictures of the informational

writing the students did about the pumpkins!

Third Grade News

Third grade has been busy learning a variety of science lessons. Whether it’s creating instruments to produce sound in a variety of pitches or watching the development of our fast-growing Brassica plants, our Hillcrest third graders are eager to learn!

Our third grade authors are currently producing a personal narrative for their writing portfolio. Their stories are very creative and well developed. Each budding author is very excited to share his/her finished masterpieces with you in the near future!

Chromebooks are all the rage in third grade. We have spent the past month practicing how to log in and find our bookmarked sites. Teachers are using the technology to help the students practice their math skills, develop their writing, and to build their comprehension skills.

It is definitely an exciting time in third grade! October promises to be filled with many other wonderful adventures for our students.

Fourth Grade News

Scholastic Book Club Contest Winners!! Mrs. Rosser’s class is showing off some of the new books they were able

to get this month, thanks to Scholastic Book Clubs and author, James Patterson. Mrs. Rosser entered a contest over the summer to win $500 and 500 bonus points through a giveaway sponsored by Scholastic Book Clubs and James Patterson. Room 215 started the year by making a list

of books they would love to have for their classroom. The next day, Mrs. Rosser received a letter that she had been selected as one of 4,000

winners out of 127,000 teachers who had entered! The students of room 215 were beyond excited to be able to get almost all of the books on their

wish list! They’ve been enjoying reading and sharing book recommendations since the books have arrived. They are looking very forward to spending the rest of the prize money and bonus points this

school year to continue their love of reading!

Fifth Grade News

As part of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, students in the fifth grade at Hillcrest Elementary School

have been participating in a Peaceful Playground Challenge. The goal of the Peaceful Playground Challenge is to engage in safe and fun

activities during recess. Each day, grades are selected for the Peaceful Playground Challenge award. The award is announced during

morning announcements and students are given a peace award that is shown on a bulletin board outside of the main office. After acquiring 5

peace awards, the grade is permitted to choose a special recess such as extra free time, basketball with teachers, game board challenges, etc. So far, fifth grade has won the Peaceful Playground Challenge

once and will be choosing their extra recess time.
