Judges Continued

Artist: Andrea Szikszay, 11th GradeTitle: “Eracism”Eracism spreads the message that all individuals, regardless of their gender and race, are equal. As the boxes are spun, the four races represented become intertwined; thus signifying racial likeness. Eracism strives to terminate racial conflicts while promoting racial harmony.

Scholarship Winner, Art Institute of TampaThe Art Institute of Tampa is pleased to announce our 2014 Summer Studio Scholarship. This scholarship is for the June 23-27, 2014 session. The scholarship covers tuition, supplies, most food and evening entertainment for the five day session. Students may choose one area of study from a variety of offerings including graphic and web design, interior design, fashion marketing, culinary arts, digital film and photography, animation and game art design.

This year we would like to award Andrea Szikskay the first place prize for her work called “Eracism.” I was impressed with how she integrated three cigar boxes mechanically, and still managed to make a dramatic and touching statement about her subject matter using mixed medias. I was touched and inpired deeply by her work. Andrea is currently a junior at Robinson High School. This is the second year she has won. We would like to extend this scholarship to her a second year in a row.

If you are interested in learning more about Summer Studio at The Art Institute of Tampa, please email me at [email protected].

The students noticed the Surgeon General's warning on the cigar boxes and that smoking can lead to death. Fifth grade students were also studying the human skeletal system in science class.

Cigar boxes are cube forms; we thought of the "Minecraft game's landscape in block shapes. After reading the book"To Dare Mighty Things" by D. Rappaport and learning that Teddy Roosevelt was a Rough Rider and that the Rough Riders were in Tampa we came up with this design. After using a grid to draw his face, Jimmy O. decided we should call him "Teddy Block-a-velt"!

Breanna Sacco 10 Bless the Broken Road

I chose the song Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts because the song is about love and how you go through life and things happen for a reason. I love the thought of love and this song just explains it, how it's not easy but God has a plan and He will lead you where you need to go.

Evelyn Lahoz 12 Humanity's Book This art piece was based on my interpretation of the French song "Je Suis un Homme" ( I am a man), by Zazie. Throuhout the song, the singer uses figurative language, in order to describe how most humans do not appreciate the various beauties and other parts of the environment that serve a major purpose in their overall lives. I made the box into a sort of book that is meant to show people as "kings" of the world that allow such destruction to occur behind them in wars over religion, leadership and so on.

Ruby Morales 12 Monster My work is based on the song "I'm Friends with a Monster." The way I set up my cigar box was that I made the outside a house and the inside a room, showing twin beds with a monster under the bed. I made the inside look scary, since it had to do with a monster and I made the outside look friendly, so it can show that the monster was a bit friendly.

Logan Dibble 12 Cabinet I have been creating art throughout my life, and I enjoy it alot. I enjoy creating art mostly because of my ability to take something that I come up with in my head and create it in one medium or another. With this peice of art I am trying to communicate that you do not have to buy a piece of furniture, you can make it on your own and express the feelings that you want to while doing it, which in turn makes this a much more rewarding experience.

Gifts to teachers of students participating in the 3rd Annual Doodads Competition were provided by Dave Gutcher in honor of his father, John Gutcher. John was a noted artists who loved all media. Before he died, the Martin F. Weber Company wanted John to have a signature line of art products, and gave him a large quantity of art supplies. John loved children and knew the importance of art education for their development. John’s family is glad that these supplies can go to those who are committed to their development in appreciation of their dedication.
