CommunityQuilts Quilts:

Hello again from the Community Quilts Chairperson. Thank you for your generous donation of 13 community quilts during the February Guild meeting. For those of you not able to attend the February meeting, I will recap the news from Community Quilts. I know that it can be difficult to make an entire

quilt at times, so how about just one or two blocks?? I am going to continue to ask for string-pieced blocks which are 101/2 inches unfinished. I will have precut muslin at my table for those who need it. I have also started requesting a new block pattern which I showed at the Guild meeting. The block requires 3 colors, light, medium and dark. You may choose your own colors. The full pattern for this easy block is in the Members Only section of the website and I will have paper copies for those who need them. We will work on collecting blocks from this pattern for a few months till we get enough to make several quilts, then we will change to a new pattern. Connie Randall also demonstrated a great and easy way to make a baby quilt at the February night Guild meeting. She made up 10 kits and handed them out, to be returned as a finished baby quilt to Community Quilts. What a great lady!!! Thank you Connie! I will have this pattern available at the March meeting. I am working on a place to hold a sew-in or cut-in. More news to come on that!! Thanks again to all you wonderful quilters! Sandy Allenbaugh

NIGHT MEETING Hello members, Another fun time was had at the February night meeting. The program was on making Three Baby Quilt tops in a Day. Also, how to make a fringed binding. There were also several kits ready to take home and finish. All the pre-made kits were taken and will be returned in April. Thank you members. There was a new member that signed up and we welcomed Charity Beckley to our Guild. She is a long arm quilter and excited to help out in anywhere she can. We also welcomed a guest, Sammie Vinson. Committee reports were presented by Sharon Crozier, Quilting 101, Darlene Landrum, UFO challenge and Carol Lewis, member classes. The door prize was won by Marge Schill. Barb Skeffington shared an article about bleeding of fabric and holding your template on fabric by using surgical tape. Very good information for all. Next month, March, there will not be a night meeting due to the retreat. The night meetings will resume in April. The program will be presented by Connie Martin Connie Randall

WEBSITE INSIGHTS I'm in the process of changing the current password. This may take me several days, so you might try the old one first and then try the new one. If for some reason, you have an urgent need for any Members Only info and can't get in, contact me and I will assist! Our new password for this year has been sent to each member. As a reminder for those still wanting to finish Margaret's 2017 Mystery Quilt, I will leave the documents up for another month under Members Only. I recommend that you download the documents for your files so you aren't short when I do remove the Mystery Quilt from the website. Margaret's presentation and my overview of the websites are posted under 2018 Programs (Members Only) with the NEW password. Judy wants to remind everyone that the first 4 blocks for the Quilt Along will be due at the 9 March day meeting. More information can be found on our website under the Farm Girl Vintage tab. Have fun creating!

Warm aloha,

Peggy

PROGRAM UPDATES MARCH PROGRAM

Judy Spahn will be presenting a trunk show and giving us some pointers on Design and how her quilts evolve. It should be a very inspiring program!

QUILT APPRAISALS I will start making appointments for quilt appraisals at the March 9 Guild meeting. Alice McElwain, a certified quilt appraiser from Bella Vista, Arkansas will be available Thursday afternoon, May 10. She will be at the Donald W. Reynolds Library in the Knox Community Room B at 1:30 p.m. Appraisals are $50 for each quilt and takes about 30 minutes. I have a form she requests you complete for her about your quilt prior to the appraisal. I will ask you to pay the $50 fee, prior to May 10, so that we will not be violating the library's rules. You do not have to pay at sign up, just so I receive payment prior to the scheduled appraisal. Checks should be payable to Alice McElwain, or you may pay in cash. You will receive receipts for your payments. She can issue appraisals for insurance purposes, fair market value or for donation. Looking forward to your signing up!

Carol Lewis 2018 RAFFLE QUILT TICKETS

Yes, it's time for the 2018 Raffle Quilt to be revealed to the Guild members. Each year's raffle quilt is the Guild's only fundraiser. The funds received help the Guild finance quilting classes, workshops, programs, and our community quilts project. Tickets are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. We all need to roll up our sleeves to sell the raffle tickets personally, and to help at the various venues where the quilt will be displayed for ticket sales. Or, you may choose to have your name on all 24 of the tickets by donating the $20. Your help will be appreciated! Your 24 tickets will be available for you to pickup at the March meeting from Joyce Linhoff and Carol Lewis. Of course if you need more than 24 tickets – we'll have them for you!!!!!!

Members Teaching Members (MTM) CLASSES We are so fortunate to have so Many Talented Members willing to teach us new and interesting patterns, techniques, and projects. Some of the classes for this year are paper piecing and English paper piecing, hand and machine appliqué, a patchwork bear, class tote, folded flowers, divided basket, new Dresdens, drafting circles, new awesome quilt design, secrets to making mini quilts, methods for making triangles, using your walking foot, making braided borders, machine binding, new bags and totes, and working with crayons on your fabric. Wow!!! We are currently taking signups for classes through April. Those classes are: Quilt As You Go by Judy Jensen, 2/27 and 4/24; Box Car Tote by Carolyn Seigal, 3/5; Drafting Radiating Designs by Judy Spahn, 3/22; Machine Appliqué by Sharon Crozier, 3/26; Perfecting Machine Binding by Mary Hazel, 4/5. We have samples at the day meetings so you can see what you will make and all the classes are held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Hwy. 62 West. We are so grateful to them for the use of their wonderful space. All classes are non-refundable unless they are cancelled by HNH. Joyce Linhoff will be available at night meetings to take signups. You must pay for your class at the time you signup to ensure you have a space. All three local shops have copies of the supply lists. If you let them know that you will be shopping with them, I’m sure they will be happy to get what supplies you need. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn new things and even if you think you don’t need to learn anything new, it’s a great way to get out and have fun with your fellow HNH members. For $5, it’s the cheapest fun you can have!

The Professor Laying out the Geese TRIANGLES, led by Darlene Landrum, kicked off the 2018 MTM classes at the Seventh Day Adventist church meeting room on Monday, February 12th. The triangle shape is basic to so many designs that this was a great topic which can be utilized many times over. This premiere MTM event was attended by 20 eager learners. With varying degrees of skills, the students were able to follow Darlene’s instruction. For those who struggled, there was plenty of help from neighboring students and Darlene. First came Half Square Triangles (HSTs) with Darlene modeling the steps as she lectured. Written instructions/diagrams were handed out for future reference, but the emphasis was on learning by doing. The first of four methods of making the HSTs went rapidly but was then followed by three more methods to make the HSTs. With such options the students were able to choose which method is best for their time, skill, and equipment. After a brief lunch break, the class continued with just three methods to make Quarter Square Triangles, then closed with how-to instructions on two ways to make the Flying Geese patterns. So, all in all NINE different ways to manage triangles, Wowsa!

Conquer Free-Motion Quilting on Your Own Time! Tech-savvy quilters who keep an eye on the internet and the quilt world know Angela Walters and Leah Day, their fabulous free-motion quilting, their books and their videos. They do a wonderful job of inspiring beginners and cheering people who are working to sharpen their skills. Angela has started a new “Free-Motion Quilt-Along” on YouTube.com. There’s a quilt top pattern (I am using plain cloth with the squares marked in water-soluble marker), and she shares the tools she uses in each video. And although she’s best-known for her long arm machine work, she’s demonstrating the techniques on a domestic machine. So if you want to quilt along and learn these skills, this is a great opportunity. It’s FREE! Just log onto YouTube.com and search for Angela Walters. You’ll have an opportunity to subscribe to her YouTube channel, which will bring notifications to your inbox when each new episode is posted.

Leah also has quilting videos on YouTube.com, but many of hers feature quilting with your walking foot. With a walking foot, the feed dogs and walking foot help you maintain control of your stitch length, although you will have less freedom to create curves. She offers lots of handy tips for managing the quilt and creating lovely designs. Many more quilters have posted videos on YouTube that you can watch when it’s convenient for you . . . over and over, if necessary (ask me how I know about that). They will help you learn to quilt on your domestic machine. Not only will it save quilting dollars (every dollar saved means more fabric!), but it will give you more control over the finished product. So make 2018 the year YOU conquer machine quilting.

QUILT ALONG* CHALLENGE

FARM GIRL VINTAGE 2018-19 QUILT ALONG

By Lori Holt of Bee in my Bonnet

The Farm Girl Vintage Quilt Along officially began February 9, 2018. There are a total of 48 blocks which can be 6” or 12” blocks, your choice. You may make all the different blocks from

the book or you may make 48 of the same block. But, you must complete and bring to the Guild meeting 4 new completed blocks each month. As an incentive, each month that you keep up

with the quilt along, your name will go into a drawing for a great prize. We will draw a winner in June 2018, October 2018, and February 2019. If you bring your completed top to the April 2019 day meeting, your name will go into the drawing for the grand prize, yet to be determined!

So, here’s how it works: Beginning with the March 9, 2018, meeting and continuing through the

February 2019 meeting, you must complete and display 4 different blocks from the FGV book. That is a total of 48 blocks. This is an honor system. All those with four new completed blocks will come up to the front and display their block. They will then put their name in for the

drawing. If you wish to follow the Quilt Along exactly, we will be following the book, with the first four blocks beginning on Page 8.

This is a great stash buster quilt. Scraps work great. Use any fabrics that appeal to you. There are additional blocks for purchase on the Fat Quarter Shop website for $5.95 each. You may

include these new blocks, but you don’t have to. Absolutely any of the blocks from the book may be used as long as you make 48. Google “Fat Quarter Shop” and search “Farm Girl Vintage” and

you will find 14 additional blocks for the FGV quilt. They are downloadable. According to the book:

6” blocks = 62” x 76” quilt 12” blocks - 92” x 92” (requires 49 blocks)

I suggest you attach sashing as you go to the top and right side of each block. This saves a lot of time and effort when piecing your quilt together. The top is due at the April 2019 meeting in

order to qualify for the grand prize.
