It’s that time of year again.. !e holiday sea-son "lled with numerous, sappy, chick-#icks, doz-ens of red roses, and all the chocolate a person could eat. Whether you love to see Valentines come, or you can’t wait to see it leave, we have provided an in-side look into this exciting holiday season on campus. In this edition of The Hilight my co-editor, Sam Barnes, and I have worked along side our sta$ to pro-vide you with all of the details about all things Valentine going on at Cullman High School. Lexi Oliver and Sadi Hulgan take an in-depth look at how loving CHS really is. Lauren Parker delivers a little information on the bas-ketball and track teams. Austin Crier and Ella Waldrop take on the daunting task of quizzing the school’s most adorable couples. How Welcoming is CHS?

Preps, jocks, nerds, geeks, wannabes, band people, drama peo-ple, loners, the party people, red-necks, drama queens, skaters- face it, every high school has cliques. Every-one belongs to their own group, their own spot at break, and their table at lunch- outsiders are not welcome. When someone or some group in-terferes with status quo of the lunch-room “seating arrangement,” it’s as if World War III is about to break loose. Mrs. Hall has been observ-ing the lunchroom and observed the same fact. She challenged Lexi Oliver and Sadi Hulgan to see how welcoming CHS really is by mix-ing it up a bit. Lexi and Sadi acted as if they were new students with-out an “assigned” place to sit. !ey were to walk into the lunchroom, randomly choose a seat with new people, and spend the entire lunch time without their normal group. !ese are Lexi’s experiences:

Day 1: A"er heating up my mac-n-cheese, I decided I would sit at a Random Table #1 with #ve girls. Two girls were sitting together with a seat separating them from three oth-er girls. I walked up to the table and politely asked if I could sit with them. One of the two girls said, “Yeah, of course,” and smiled at me. !e oth-er three girls looked at me, literally looked me up and down, rolled their eyes and started whispering. (You all know what I’m talking about. !e whole scenario where the girls learn together, put their hand over their mouths, giggle, while giving you the death stare.) I sat down on the one extra seat and started eating. !e two girls politely excused them-selves because they had to go to the nurse’s o$ce and le" me to deal with the three other girls. !e one I was sitting next to pulled out her phone

and starting telling, a little too loudly, her friends about the steamy encoun-ter she and her boyfriend had last night. I was morti#ed and so incred-ibly uncomfortable. !e bell #nally rang a"er I heard the entire story and they all le". Everyone started exiting and entering the lunchroom, but no one but my best friend, Hadley Hall, and another girl came to sit with me. Day 2: Today, I sat at Ran-dom Table #2 with a random group of six people. Except for the obvi-ous conversation, no one spoke. It

was the most awkward twenty-#ve minutes I have ever spent. Everyone was obviously afraid to talk! Two of the people actually got up and le". However, I was ecstatic that no one was spilling juicy details about the things that happened with their signi#cant other the night before. Day 3: I spent my lunch to-day with three girls at Random Table #3 today. !ey were all very gossipy. !ey trash-talked about people the whole #rst bell of lunch! !e girls kept telling me about a few of my friends and how awful they were, the things my friends have done, and what was

wrong with them. I hated hearing the things these girls were saying. I end-ed up telling them that most of what they had heard was not true and void-ed every negative comment made. !ank goodness for the bell because the second half of lunch we chatted about how excited they were for the pageant and the Key Club Dance. Day 4: As I was walking in the door, I noticed this one girl sitting by herself. I sat down across from her and starting eating my carrots. We spent our #rst lunch bell talk-

ing, and we had things in common that I would have never imagined! She liked !e Hunger Games, Justin Bieber, my kind of music, the same movies, actors and actresses, books, and Call of Duty, etc.. She le" a"er that bell so I moved to a di%erent ta-ble. I sat down with a group of guys. I expected them to be as awkward as everyone else had been, but they proved me wrong. !ese guys were actually not awkward or even shy. We discussed “Call of Duty and Skyrim”, Harry Potter, and everything else!!ese are Sadi’s experiences: Day 1: For my research, I en-

listed the help of always friendly John Weeks. !e #rst day we sat with few girls whose names we knew but not a whole lot more. We sat our stu% down purposely where they normally sit, so they were obviously shaken when someone else’s food was at their seat. John and I carried on a conversation with the girls for a few minutes, and then there was a dead awkward si-lence. Maybe a minute later, the girls began to carry on a conversation be-tween just them which made it even more awkward. John and I just sat there silently for a few minutes as we ate our lunches, until he got them en-gaged in our conversation for maybe thirty seconds, and then the silence was back. !e girls were somewhat friendly and obviously a little awk-ward, but they de#nitely didn’t go out of their way to make us feel welcome. Day 2: John and I sat down in the middle of about three di%er-ent groups. It was a disaster. A"er the initial greeting as we sat down, not another word was exchanged be-tween us and the other groups. We were completely ignored. !e groups basically turned their bodies away from us and carried on their three to-tally separate conversations, although John and I were sitting right smack in the middle of them. !ey weren’t do-ing so well on the friendly scale to say the least. One of the groups got up and actually le" halfway between the #rst and second bell. !e two remain-ing groups stayed just as unfriendly, one in another language, throughout the second bell, and John and I were more than happy to go back to class. In conclusion, we realized a"er this whole experience, that it is not just “THE group” that is snob-by and think that they are too good for outsiders, but nearly every other group considers themselves too good for outsiders. Everyday, someone spends their entire lunch without anyone to talk to! !e next time you are at lunch, mix it up a little. Invite other people to your table, or just sit down at theirs. If someone shows up at yours, don’t hate, appreciate!

January, 2007. Whilst standing in church, my body was thrown, out of nowhere into what really seemed like an epileptic ę�ǯȱ �¢ȱ ����ȱ  ��ȱ ��������¢ȱbound in chains, my freedom plummeting at a record pace. How was I going to be a success? I have dysautonomia (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome ��ȱ ��ȱ �����ę�Ǽǯȱ �����ȱ was my life heading at this point? What was the point? I was depressed, hiding from the world and feeling hopeless inside. Afraid to tell others how I felt, because let’s face it, who would understand? I was trapped, bound and confused. The term invisible illness refers to any medical condition that is not outwardly visible to others, even health care

professionals. Invisible illnesses encompass a broad range of conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, dementia, psychiatric illness, autoimmune disorders, and even cancer. �¢����������ǰȱ ę����¢�����ǰȱmultiple sclerosis, celiac disease, arthritis, cancer, even bipolar ��������ȱ ǯȱ �������ȱ ��¢ȱ ��ȱ �����ȱterms in any given group, and chances are that very few are actually able to even pronounce these rare and somewhat even unheard of conditions. What do these disorders have in common? They are all “invisible.” Looking at myself personally, it is physically impossible to tell that �ȱ ����ȱ ����ȱ �ĝ�����ȱ  ���ȱ ���ȱblood/brain condition known as dysautonomia for going on

ę��ȱ ¢����ȱ �� ǯȱ ���ȱ �����������ȱreality is this, seemingly growing numbers of the population (even right here at Cullman High ������Ǽȱ ���ȱ �ĝ�����ȱ  ���ȱ �����ȱaforementioned conditions and more. Is anyone aware that celiac disease causes a severe intolerance to gluten, or that dysautonomia makes even the most mundane task of standing up into an incredible workload? Nearly one in two people live with an illness of some sort, and most chronic illnesses are invisible. Conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome ǻ���Ǽȱ ��ȱ �������¢ȱ ��ȱ ��������ȱ�����¢ȱ ����ȱ ������ȱ ����ȱ �ě����ȱ����ȱ ������ȱ ���ȱ ���ǯȱ ����ȱ ����ȱ125 million Americans have at least one chronic condition, and for more than 40 million, their illnesses limit daily activities. It creates a challenge for those who live with invisible daily chronic pain, symptoms, and ������¢ȱ ����������ȱ ����ȱ �ě����ǯȱ����ȱ �������ȱ ���ȱ ���ȱ Ě�ȱ ��ȱthe chicken pox, it’s generally more than fairly obvious by just looking at them. We can also see when someone is, as hinted before, in a wheelchair or uses a cane, or if they’re hauling around an oxygen tank. That is exactly the image that comes up when the word “disability” comes to mind. Approximately 19 million people ��ȱ ���ȱ ������ȱ ����ȱ  ���ȱ ��ę���ȱas severely disabled, did not use a wheelchair, cane, crutches, or walkers. A disability cannot simply be determined solely on whether or not a a person uses visible equipment. It is quite likely that we have all at one time seen someone park in a handicapped space and emerge without any

sort of cane or wheelchair that is probably expected. Sure, some people do take advantages of things such as that, but maybe ��ȱ �����¢ȱ ��ȱ ��Ĵ��ȱ ��ȱ ���������ȱ����ȱ������ȱ����ę�ȱ��ȱ ���ȱ�����ǯ With any invisible �������ǰȱ ����¢��¢ȱ ����ȱ ��ȱ �ě�����ȱin a plethora of ways. The ����ȱ �����ȱ �����ȱ ��ę���ȱ ��ȱchronically ill is over 75 percent. Depression is also present 15-20% higher for the chronically ill than for the average person.ȱ �ȱ �¢����ȱ ��ȱ ����ȱ ��Ĵ���ǰȱcancelled dates due to an inordinate amount of laborious doctor visits, simply just lacking the energy to go out with friends on a Friday night is just a taste of what is still yet to come. Complicated friends and family who do not quite understand limited amounts of energy are generally a relatively small complaint. Physical illnesses are not the end of the situation, as millions of Americans also ��ě��ȱ ����ȱ ������ȱ ���������ǯȱDepression, bipolar disorder, ����ȱ����£��������ǯȱ���¢ȱ��ě��ǰȱand many are simply either too afraid or too ashamed to admit it. A cure is impossible if a sickness is hidden or kept away, and people are urged to speak up about such conditions because many are not even well known among the medical community.ȱ ��ȱ���ȱ����ȱę��ȱ¢����ȱ�����ȱmy own personal diagnosis, and roadblocks appear and disappear along the way. As advances are made in the way of medical science, new hopes appear for ���ȱ �����ȱ �ě�����ȱ  ���ȱ ���������ǯȱ

Ball So HardWorking their way through the area

Lauren Parker, Staff Writer As Cullman’s basketball season is coming to a close, the Varsity Girls’ standing record is a very impressive 20-5. Coach Hayes has been leading the charge for our team of 11 talented and h a r d w o r k i n g ladies. He e s p e c i a l l y commends the senior girls’ d e d i c a t i o n and teamwork. J e n n i f e r Jenkins, Rachael Fisher, Abby

A d a m s , Jorden Quick, and ������ȱ ��Ĵ�ȱ h a v e all been on the varsity team for two consecutive years with both aforementioned years being

winning seasons. “These girls have established a

winning tradition,” says Coach,”and I hope it will continue

for the years to come.” Coach Hayes brags that ���ȱ �����ȱ ���ȱ �ȱ ���Ĵ¢ȱtight-knit group and always support each other, especially with Jorden Quick’s recent accomplishment of �Ĵ������ȱ ŗŖŖŖȱ ������ȱ

during her time playing for the varsity team. However, Jorden is not only the highest scoring member of the team, but she has accumulated over 300 assists, not including this year. The Lady Bearcats won against the Hartselle Tigers this past Thursday night, and the team is heading to the second round of the area tournament February 11th.

�����ȱ ���ȱ ����ȱ �ěȱ ��ȱ ��ȱearlier start than normal this year on account of Cullman’s newest addition to their athletics

department, Indoor Track. This change comes with Alabama High School Athletic Association’s decision to reinstate Indoor Track and Field coupled with the opening of Birmingham’s brand new, state-of-the-art Cross Plex facility, a $46 million sports complex that opened for ���ȱę���ȱ����ȱ��ȱ������ȱŘŖǰȱŘŖŗŗǯȱThis very impressive facility not only hosts area track meets on its 200m hydraulic track, but it also has enough volleyball courts for 9 games, and a pool big enough to house a state tournament. The indoor varsity teams will �������ȱ��ȱŚȱ�����ȱ����ȱę���ȱ¢���ȱincluding the AHSAA. State Championship as well as some

of the largest scholastic indoor track meets held across the South. However, that is not the end for this team; the outdoor track and ę���ȱ ������ȱ ���������ȱ ����ȱ��¢�ȱ�Ğ��ȱ ���ȱ ����������ȱ��ȱ ���ȱ������ȱ ������������ǯȱ ���ȱ ę���ȱmeet will be in early March, and the season will conclude with the State Championship in ���ȱ ������ȱ ���ȱ ę���ȱ  ������ȱin May. CHS will host four �����ȱ ����ȱ ¢���ȱ �ě�����ȱ ������ȱon our home track including two varsity meets on March 10th and 23rd and two middle school meets. The Bearcats will be led this year by Head Coaches �����ȱ�¢�ȱ���ȱ ������ȱ�����Ĵȱwith the assistance of Assistant/Middle School Coaches Billy �����Ĵȱ ���ȱ ���¢ȱ ������ǯȱ���ȱ ������ȱ ���ěȱ  ����ȱ ����ȱ ��ȱwish our Track and Field team the best of luck this season. We know they will represent our school in a great way!

The Varsity boys have also had a very successful season so far with a current record of 17-6. The team consists of ten boys, including Brian Murphy, Jordan Vass, Jacob Knight, Greg Smith, and ���ȱ ��ě��ǰȱ���ȱę��ȱ�������ȱthat lead the team to their victories. Not only have they made ��ȱ ��ȱ ���ȱ ���¢�ě�ǰȱbut they are also the Co-Area C h a m p s a n d a r e 5 - 1 i n

the area. Additionally,

they were ranked as high

Valentine’s Day is here and

���¢ȱ��ȱ¢��ȱ���ȱ��Ĵ���ȱ��¡����ȱfor your special date with the one

you love, while the rest of you are

planning your “I hate Valentine’s

Day” parties. This day, that we

traditionally celebrate every year,

is designated for romance and

the confession of love, but do

any of us really know what love

is? Webster’s describes love as a

“strong desire” towards someone

or something, but is love really

only about a desire? Love is best

descibed in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

“Love is patient and kind. Love

is not jealous or boastful or proud

or rude. It does not demand

its own way. It is not irritable,

and keeps no record of being

wronged. It does not rejoice about

injustice whenever the truth wins

out. Love never gives up, never

loses faith, is always hopeful,

and endures through every

circumstance.” A love like this is

unconditonal despite our millions

of imperfections, something that

can only come from God. Most

of you would make the comment

“hate is a powerful word,” not

even acknowledging the power

of the word love or even where

love originated. In 1 John 4:8 it

clearly states “God is love.” Being

that God created the universe, He

created love. Many of you might

��ȱ�������ȱ��ȱ����ȱ����Ȭę����ȱ��¢ǰȱmoping around, feeling sorry for

yourself because there is no one

for you to share the love with,

what you don’t know is there

is someone there, maybe not

physically, but spiritually. “You

are loved more than you will ever

know, by someone who died to

know you” This verse, Romans

5:8, is an obvious proclamation of

God’s vast love; a love so large, it

is almost impossible to grasp or

understand. If you’re struggling

 ���ȱę�����ȱ����ȱ�������ȱ�������ǰȱremember God has a plan for you.

����ȱ����ȱ����ȱ�ěȱ����ȱ�������ȱlove on this earth and maybe

spend a year discovering His

love for you. Don’t forget God,

the original lover, sent the very

ę���ȱ���������ȱ ���ȱ� �ȱ������ȱ��ȱwood and three nails; a valentine

most of us take for granted. God

had the option of sending the

angels Gabriel or Michael, but He

chose His only son, the perfect

�������ȱ �����ę��ȱ ��ȱ ����ȱ��ǯȱ ȱ����ȱis love. He is the ideal valentine.

Some of you might say you

have already found your true love

and you are planning a wedding

for the near or distant future; you

may be right, I have no doubt in

high school sweet hearts, but I do

����ȱ �����ȱ ��ȱ ȃ����Ȅȱ �Ğ��ȱ ���¢ȱa two-week relationship. You

might use the defense of “I’m not

in love, I just love him/her,” an

��������ȱ �ȱ ���ȱ ��ę�����¢ȱ �����ȱwith, but would it not make life

����ȱ ������ȱ ��ȱ ������ȱ �¡�����ȱyour love or just avoid the word

all together until those feelings

are eternal . Infatuation is one

thing, but a love that quick is rare,

if not impossible. Relationships

and dating are great! They are

live and learn situations. You can

learn so much about what you

are looking for in a future spouse

by dating, but do not let a your

“love” blind you. Sometimes

you have to realize what you

may be feeling really is not love.

Whether you have

someone to spend Valentine’s

day with this year or you don’t,

remember Jesus loves you more

than you can comprehend and

He will always be your valentine.

Every year the CHS Southerner pageant is held in the CHS auditorium. This year the pageant was held on January 28, 2012 at 7:00 P.M. So much time and preparation goes into the pageant. The contestants entered the stage following a dance number by Hannah Cornelius and Jackson Spradlin. The top ten of the 21 girls (Makala Hart, Evan Williams, Hannah Williams, Anna Hendrix, Lauren ������¢ǰȱ ��Ĵ��ȱ �����ǰȱ ��¢���ȱPalmer, Hannah Shelton, Sileah Swalve, and Whitney Eason) answered questions on stage. The night ended with Sileah Swalve, the recently crowned 2012 CHS Fair Queen, gaining yet another title in this year’s Southerner pageant. Sileah was crowned Miss Southerner by the ŘŖŗŗȱ  �����ǰȱ ���¢ȱ �������ǰȱ �Ğ��ȱa beautiful night of pageantry. Each girl who competed did �ȱ �����ȱ ���ȱ ���ȱ ��Ğȱ �����ȱ ����ȱon Cullman High School.
